Does your motorhome have black smoke when starting? It could be a simple matter of replacing the oil and air filter. It's such a simple procedure.

The diesel filter sensor is there to detect water in the system. Water is heavier than diesel so sinks to the bottom and can be drained away by undoing the sensor or the white cap at the bottom of the filter, hence the little drain port.
Keep an eye on that air filter. If it gets black fairly quickly, then the PCV valve is letting oil from the crankcase breather through into the filter. Normal engine wear I'm afraid causes that. More regular engine oil changes will slow down the wear slightly.

What a pair of nuggets, as has been commented on, the centre o ring was left off the new filter and you really show fix any cracks in the air filter housing before re installing it. What is it aboutsome British mechanics, the state of his workshop and general demeanour really let the side down.

black smoke is caused by diesel/fuel and blue smoke is engine oil .. dirty injectors and failed heater plugs often cause black smoke blue smoke is because the engine is burning engine oil, could be over filled, blocked breather, worn piston rings or turbo (if turbo model) unless something more serious.

Replacing the fuel filter to cure black smoke is a waste of money!
The reason the engine admits black smoke is a lack of air into the engine!
    Or faulty injectors!
It could also be caused by collapsing or week air induction hoses!
Moving on to the fuel filter, the filter that has the white bung with a hose attachment is for periodically draining water that sometimes accumulates in the filter!
The black bung with electrical wires attached are wired up to your dash that tells you, you have water in your fuel filter!
CHANGING YOUR FUEL FILTER WILL NOT CURE BLACK SMOKE!

@@HermanHitstheRoad the fuel filter change did not stop the black smoke my friend!
Take it from me I am a fully skilled diesel mechanic!
The only way you get black smoke is from a lack of fresh air entering into the engine and or a egr problem! But this later egr would not show up until you were driving at a certain revs!
The only other cause would be your injectors over fueling!
The replacement of your fuel filter, although it's good to change at the correct intervals WOULD NOT CURE YOUR BLACK SMOKE PROBLEM!
you cured it by changing your air filter!
