It seems to me that when creating "The Diner" and his other horror adventures, he needed to include a rule book for anyone that hadn't played a Rule Zero game before. (Telling people "go download the free SRD" isn't a great idea, people want a complete product.) But selling the Horror RPG rulebook as a standalone book, with blurb about "chilling", "nightmare" etc is misleading as this you don't get any chilling nightmarish stuff within the rulebook itself. He's also done other horror scenarios/campaigns, it was in a backerkit (a kickstarter type thing), it included "Can You See Them", "The Arcade", as well as The Diner, and one other one as well. I didn't back it because I was skint at the time.
I think that Can You See Them might be a more campaign-based game where you create your own characters, rather than pre-generated. So as part of that collection of books, the Horror RPG rulebook makes sense, it is everything needed to play the one-shot adventures with pre-generated characters, and longer adventures where you create characters and explore some creepy town and woods rather than being stuck in a diner.
What would have been amazing though is if the Horror RPG rulebook contained The Diner, or vice versa, as then with the core rules you'd also get a bunch of example monsters and NPCs and situations. And then if you decide to create your own scenario or long campaign, you can create your own monsters and NPCs inspired by the ones included in The Diner.

Didn’t see it on Drivethru. Wonder if it was taken down over the same complaints

My mistake.... It wasn't Drivethru, he offered PDF versions on his website. That's where I saw it at.

My friends and I are looking for a new RPG, and I supported the backerkit of "Can You See Them?", so I got the core rule book, and I felt like "I must have missed something. Where are the monsters? Enemies? Are you supposed to make your own? This is my first time running this game. Give me some guidelines", but I started googling and came upon your review, and it seems I am not alone. That's a shame. Some nice art in the PDF I got though, so I might steal some of that for another game. My PDF text doesn't look like yours.

As well as the core rulebook, did you also get any of the campaigns/scenarios? I'm curious about the actual "Can You See Them?", is that also pre-generated characters or are you supposed to create characters for that one, is it a longer campaign rather than a quick one-shot? I know there was also an option to get The Diner as part of the backerkit as well, and a couple of other scenarios.

Sounds like the missing art is the least of this book's problems...

Indeed... But still worth pointing out I feel.

@@AdventuresWithDice Definitely. Properly done art greatly enhances books like this. Don't know what the author was thinking here.

I picked this book up at Gen Con last year and had the same experience you did. I thought it would have something to do with Horror and it was just the rules for YZE. It is just a resource book for the rules and nothing more. Sorry buddy we both got ripped off.

It happens....but when it does, it becomes content. lol

@@AdventuresWithDice So true. It is one of the problems with an open game license. You can't really stop someone from making something even if it is just reprinting the core rules.
