  • Livestock auctions may be the second oldest profession - see how the free-market economy helps keep Maryland farming families in business.
    Garret County’s Friends Stockyard is one of the last remaining livestock auctions serving Maryland farmers. The Friend family have been running weekly auctions since the 60’s and today’s managers, Brothers Joe and John Friend along with USDA market reporter Scott Rhodes give viewers a better understanding of what livestock auctions provide family farmers; farmers like Mike Diehl who let’s viewers follow along as he prepares his cattle to garner the best prices possible.

    That 2 million in annual Maryland sales remark toward the end of the video must be a mistake, the industry is a lot bigger than that

      Good spot! Excluding sales of dairy, Maryland's annual livestock sales are approaching 80 million dollars.
