You can't listen to Gurrumul without a lump in your throat or tear in your eye. The soul of that sound is coming from the dawn of humanity. He was to good for us.
He sings of his land and his life. I saw his mother interviewed. She said " If you close your eyes and listen, you will know him". He has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. ❣️❣️
Thank you for showing respect by putting up the warning first ❤️. This song is haunting. Delta, who also performed this with him provided an explanation of what the song is about - suggest you find that video and watch it. It makes this performance even more powerful. The saddest tragedy is this is a beautiful person with so much to share who died too young. Way to many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders die too young.
I am an immigrant from Wales although I have lived here most of my life. I can hear the country in Gurrumuls voice. To me it’s like the Treorchy male voice choir who sing with the country in their voice.
I'm crying...... his voice.... the passion, emotion etc........ I do not know the language.... but it doesn't matter...... just like food and dance..... music is the universal language..... you just FEEL it......
Always gives me chills. His voice is breath taking. RIP you beautiful man. We are privileged to be able to listen to him for an eternity. Perfection ❣️
I saw this beautiful human being on his last tour. I sat with tears during this song because it reminds me of my late father. His voice physically penetrates you. It literally makes you feel like you vibrate with his vibrato! He was pure magic and it’s sad that he was taken from the world so young! Thanks for your beautiful reaction!
He tears my heart out,NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING LIKE IT,HE COULD GET PEOPLE OFF DRUGS,HE COULD DO ANYTHING,THE BEST DONT STAY FOR LONG SADLY,MY FATHER WAS AS SPIRITUAL AS THIS MAN AND HE DIED WHEN I WAS 28 AND IM 54 NOW,I NEVER STOP MISSING HIM MY DEAR DADDY❤❤❤❤
Thank you for your enthusiastic yet respectful response to his performance 🙂 I began tearing up before he even started singing. The anticipation of his voice just does that to you 😊
Thank you for the warning at the start of the video, appreciate the respect for culture. My sister had him over at her place playing guitar once. So beautiful his song and voice. I used to go to Galiwinku for work now and then, always loved my visits there.
This is incredibly beautiful! I never tire of hearing it! 😌😪 Delta Goodrem performed this with him on "The Voice" Australia, in perfect harmony! 🤗 (Please check out: Isaiah Firebrace, a modern Aboriginal singer/songwriter! There is a video out of him performing with the Maori singer Stan Walker in their native languages, amazing! 👍)
He sings of country, where he comes from is a tropical paradise, where the warm bay breeze passes over your soul, where the love and connection to family is overwhelming and the crack and snap of the camp fire delivers aromas of Eucalyptus perfumes and where history is shared of the Bayini.
Thank you so much! More people should know of him. I was lucky enough to see him live a few years back, and it was simply transformative. He has several solo albums and also collaborated with numerous musicians (he did a duet with Paul Kelly, singing Amazing Grace - Kelly singing in English, Dr G in Yolngu), and his final album, Djarimerri, is a masterpiece, blending traditional chants and ceremony songs with contemporary minimalist orchestral arrangements. There is a documentary about him made just before his death which is well worth watching.
Much respect for putting the warning at the start of the video. It's something not everyone thinks about. I was lucky enough to see him several times as i was involved with the music scene in the Top End here. His bass player was Michael Hohnen who was co-founder and creative director of Skinnyfish Music the local label that signed and recorded Dr Gs albums here in Darwin.
Thankyou for the beautiful respect that you have shown to this performance. You get it. Geoffrey was brilliant and it just highlights the tragedy that the indigenous suffer from higher rates of disease and illness and often die far too soon. I am glad that I and many others recommended this performance knowing that you would be both taken away and respectful.
Good on ya mate ! Lovely Comments ! Thank U So much ,but I am Sure We Aussies love this man So much ! Just Artistry ,beauty & Divine Music from within ! God bless Him ,Forever !
Amazing and breathtaking ❤ I am not an indigenous Australian, but I sincerely respect their culture, their absolutely awesome music and the land we all live in. Thank you Matt for showcasing Aussie indigenous music and artistry to the world. ❤
I have seen him live in concert a few times. Even in the largest venue you can hear a pin drop while he sings. He captivates the whole audience and his voice travels through your body and into your soul . Deepest respect dear gurumul rip❤
Yaama maliyaa. Dr G came from disadvantage and with his gift, perseverance and a sh&% ton of hard work broke into the White Man's world. Singing in language, keeping the dream, spirit and culture alive.
If Archie and youthu Yindi brought politics to the front, Gurrumul brought life, love, culture, ancestors, family and spirit forward. His aunty said it best, 'if Gurrumul's songs bring tears to your eyes then it's speaking to your spirit'.
I also love him singing duet with Delta Goodrum in which they sing Bayini with Delta singing an English part as well as Aboriginal. Also incredible is his duet with Paul Kelly singing Amazing Grace in which Gurrumul sings it in Aboriginal, while Kelly sings English. Aboriginal music has benefited from the original Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander radio station started in Townsville in 1972, and now there are around 130 Aboriginal community radio stations around the nation, some big, and some small. Glad you have discovered the incredible sounds of modern indigenous music, and use this taste to explore further. Australia has been producing great music from all cultures for a long time, but most of the world is only waking up to Australian musical treasures relatively recently.
I feel ya mate, this song makes me cry every time I hear it. It is just plain beautiful. I reckon you'd love Kasey Chambers cover of Eminems Lose Yourself, raw emotion and also gives you the chills.
When Dr G performed at Apollo Bay Music Festival in the 2000s I saw him. He was performing in a marquis holding over one thousand people and you could have heard a pin drop they were so enthralled. Dr G was a special sort of performer.
I very much enjoy your Aussie reactions mate!. You are a very genuine good hearted fella. The interest and time you take and the respect you give is a pleasure mate!.👍 Thankyou, Zebedee from Oz. 👍👍
I realize my finding your beautiful reaction comes a year later but this was so thoughtful and touching! If you haven't already, react to Delta Goodrem and Gurrumul (from The Voice Australia season 2) their duet of Bayani is beautiful and healing as well! Like this one, tears flow from the first note. Delta (an absolutely beautifully talented singer/songwriter in her own right) stated "it was the greatest single honor of her life to be asked to sing with Gurrumul" Enjoy and God Bless you!
You really one of my favourites 💕 you always try to understand and empathise and I appreciate you for it 🙏 and you listen to your fans suggestions which is also nice lol
Yeah it's beautiful. Really special. It's just such a tragedy that the people like this that do things so well, those that unite us, as opposed to those that divide us, are seemingly always lost to us so quickly. Lost before they could ever realize their potential, I don't mean their professional potential but their potential to bridge the divide.
😂😂❤❤❤just amazing . miss didjeridoo. yeah it's the Pacifika melody. The World forgot how is reach the melanesian culture ! Aboriginal culture With Gurrumul performance it's so powerfull and he take you far away With his mystic song and voice to show the World how is beautiful our own culture that allmighty give us. So take care and sharing it with the World. Jah Bless Oceanian culture ❤❤❤❤❤ 9:26
His music is amazing so nice and relaxing. Another aboriginal artist you should checkout is troy cassar daley singing my gumbayggir skies and Shadows on the hill
If you think his guitar playing looked a bit wierd its because he was born blind and self taught. And left handed. So instead of turning the guitare around and restringing it so the the low strings are on top and the higher strings at the bottom. He just figured out how to play it upside down. Amazing. He also played drums and keyboards. RIP.
Thank you for sharing this. Just so you and viewers know, the fastest extinct languages in the world are from the first nations people of Australia. There are aboriginal communities that only have a handful of people who can speak their language from their clan/group. These performances are special.
I do believe, Matt that you are slowly but surely falling in love with Australia... You are welcome to make this place your home with your family anytime!
His voice is so moving You feel the l emotion though you don’t know the language I don’t celebrate Invasion/Australia Day but I play his music among others to reflect
What can I add to what has already been said. I have been a big fan of Dr G for a long time and miss him very much. Sting recognised his talent and did a duet with Dr G doing ' Every Breath You Take'. Sting sang in English and Dr G responded in Yolgnu (pronounced Yol - new). Another collaboration to look at is 'Gathu Mawula' with indigenous band Blue King Brown.
Did you notice, he had an unusual guitar playing style. Left- handed, but playing a notmal right-handed guitar. He had the instrument upside down, strumming upward would be very difficult, so he played acoustically, picking the notes instead. Beautifully done.
You might notice he is left-handed but he taught himself to play a guitar upside down. He said himself, being blind, he didn't know it should be the other way around.

Yothu Yindi brought the politics to the fore... Gurrumul brought the spiritual to us...
The ‘spiritual’ is, always was, there, but G….. opened many non-Ab people’s ears to it.
There are none so deaf as those who will not listen. 🤍
Almost in tears listening to this again. He had a beautiful voice.
Thank you for showing respect by putting up the warning first ❤️.

Oh yes! Isaiah is amazing.
Isaiah also represented us in Eurovision
@@xxillicitxx Yes, I don't think he was confident enough there! He was overwhelmed a little! Good singer!

Watch all his videos. Listen to his songs. He is one of the most special Aussie Indigenous musicians of all time!!
The voice of an angel and that humming is just so beautifull. So man who great songs and demonstrates how music transcends language.
The audience is not stunned, but silent out of respect.
A beautiful and amazing singer. May he be resting in peace
This is a beautiful reaction. You are so right, a song is about conveying emotion.

Brings tears to my eyes every time, although I don't know the language, it's his beautiful voice.

he and Delta Goodrum sang "bayini" another beautiful song. another artist to check out would be Archie Roach "Took the children away."
He was blind, but God gave him a special gift, and we thank him for sharing it with us.
It is a privilege to listen to his soul searching music.
Gurrumul is the Prophet of Aboriginal Dream Time and all the experiences of Mother Earth. 🇦🇺
He sings to your soul ❤
This man is hypnotic and his voice is unforgettable.☮️
Mat you smiling makes me smile as well. You are right, that was just beautiful. Thank you for sharing your joy with us
I love his voice… it speaks of our great land’s spirit……Even those of us who came with the convicts and have been here for generations feel it 💛💙
RIP DR G. Love his music.. Love his sole.
I always get covered in chills when I hear him sing ❤

I cry every time I listen to him the voice of an Angel which he must now be.
This is such a lovely reaction. It's true that music prevails language barriers. Gurrumul is singing in Yoŋgul
He wrote the song, and as far as can remember it is a tribute to his father and his passing away , and what it meant to him.
Suprised he put the warning at the start. Suprised he knew to do that, shows he knows alot more than the usual fan of australia.
It was mentioned several times in the comments of the reaction to Treaty.
@@sherylthomson8088 never saw that one.

Cheers for your honest reaction. Yep it's a fantastic performance. 🤙🎸🎶
He is amazing RIP.
Thankyou for sharing on your channel. It's hard to describe how beautiful Yolngu people are.
interesting reaction mate. i'm an aussie but only know about a dozen koori words but like you I have a fair grasp on what he is saying. amazing

I'm pretty sure when I heard thos song he was with a band. But with all the string instruments, that was next level ❤ it.
Yep you got it. No words
This is one of those songs that prevails the language barrier. Gurrumul is singing in Yolŋu Matha. This was such a lovely reaction. 🥰
You notice that he plays the guitar upside down, because he’s blind, when he was young, he learned how to play by ear ❤
He was one of a kind

Bit late but there is a famous aboriginal painter Albert Namatjira well worth looking at. He does the most beautiful landscapes in water colours.
You don't need to understand the words to understand this beautiful song.
R.I.P gurrumul! And aboriginal legend👑! You should react to Gurrumul - Bapa live
You might notice he is left-handed but he taught himself to play a guitar upside down. He said himself, being blind, he didn't know it should be the other way around.
Exactly...
