    Hi Kenneth! I’m a studio c/JK studios fan who’s been watching old divine comedy sketches and your acting skills really stood out to me on the cast! So I looked you up on studio c wiki and found the link to this channel! I’m really glad you made this video because I’m currently working on a lord of the rings parody sketch fo perform with my friends for my channel! I actually made a birthday video for Jason Gray from the perspective of several studio c characters. I watched a lot of old sketches for inspiration, wrote a script , dressed up and played all 7 parts. It was my first and most challenging “parody work” I’ve ever done!😂 Jason actually did a react video to it! Here it is➡️m.ruclips.net/video/2r9v9UWurmY/видео.html
    I just finished watching your two original sketches on this channel, they were great! I also noticed your brief appearance in one of Jeremy Warner’s old vlogs. My first day at college I wanted to fake an English accent as well but the first time I talked to someone, I chickened out,😂 your accent devotion over two semesters was quite impressive! Jason may be my favorite Studio C member, but your my favorite Divine Comedy member! 💙

      Hi Rae! Thanks so much for your comment! Very cool video. Do you enjoy doing parody work? It looks like you had a lot of fun. I miss writing and performing sketch, so the little bits I get put together for this channel are providing a little bit of an outlet. I'm flattered that you liked my old sketches! I spend most of my writing time working on novels now, but I still teach comedy and still work with Divine Comedy in an advisor role. That's always fun.
      You'll have to let me know when your LOTR parody video is done!

      Yes, I love writing! I’m less experienced in comedy tho, I have written a lot of songs and poetry in the past (mostly sad stuff.) That’s awesome that you write novels and help others with their writing, you can really pass on your gift that way! I’ll let you know how my lotr parody turns out, I’ll be playing Frodo! ☕️

    Can we get a video on the brilliance of Darkplace? That show feels like a witty parody that doesn't actually draw on source material.

    • @InsteadofWriting
      @InsteadofWriting  4 года назад +2

      Let me put it in the queue! Darkplace is unique because it chooses to parody two, distinct genres as a whole. It definitely merits greater discussion as that's a strategy a lot of shows have found success with recently. Seemed like Community just parody genre-hopped every episode for a couple seasons. A Fistful of Paintballs is an amazing example.

    As a hard core fan of both Severus Snape and Mister Darcy, I am in love with the idea of the mash up. Be hanged all of the naysayers!!! Am I a sick woman, prone to sadomasochism? Probably, but I like me some devilish men and the two of them as one? Chefs 💋

    I have an idea to take a popular novel and change the characters all into animals and follow original story but with animals. Would that break the copy right laws.

    this feels like an intro to a whole class on the topic. what about the 'replace yourself' videos do where people place themselves into a scene of a movie to make a sketch about it? Do they mostly fall into parody and if not, are they still fair use? ruclips.net/video/Ca8oZfOYjGQ/видео.html Kevin James does a lot of them too.

    • @InsteadofWriting
      @InsteadofWriting  3 года назад +2

      Hi Catilin! Thanks for the comment! Most of the videos you're talking about will fall under Fair Use, but the key is making sure you do a case by case analysis. So long as the video is making a transformative comment or critique on the original movie or video, you should be good. But when the new video just uses the old video to do something different entirely, you're not protected the same way.
      Awesome channel, by the way! Yourhype sizzle reel is so cool.

    Hey there in parody would weird al's parody on star wars could be a good example (Not the bar baker type of parody)?

    • @InsteadofWriting
      @InsteadofWriting  3 года назад

      I actually use weird al’s Anakin Guy when I teach my class because it’s a complex case. You have three moving parts: the American Pie composition, Star Wars episode I, and the new Weird Al lyrics. The relationship between weird al’s lyrics and each of those other copyrighted works should be analyzed separately. You likely have a strong case for parody in the case of Star Wars since the new lyrics just make fun of the plot. But the composition of American Pie is a harder argument because the composition sounds largely unaltered. I’m not sure how weird al’s team went about licensing everything for this song, but you gotta look at those one on one relationships when you do the Fair Use analysis.

    Will your video on Parody law be only concerning British law, or will it also contain American law as well? I'm a Texan.

    • @InsteadofWriting
      @InsteadofWriting  3 года назад +1

      This video describes only American parody law. The Brits have some slightly different nuances when it comes to parody. Their parody exemption to copyright stems from a key phrase "caricature, humor, or pastiche." I've not yet done the research to parse through their court opinions to see exactly how they define those three words in practice.
      But this video outlines the US approach to the Fair Use Parody exemption to copyright.
