  • Called The Lady Isabella and reputed to be the largest waterwheel in the world. For a modest fee you can climb to the top, and spend hours on the wonderful maze of scenic walks and, with the free loan of a hard hat, enter the actual lead mine. My Japanese friend was impressed with the silence of all this power generated from what seems like an impossibly small quantity of water. The ultimate green machine. Well worth the gate money come rain or shine.
Also check out the water wheels of Hama. One of them may prove to be larger. They certainly are impressive. See: • Salto de cabeza desde ...
Laxey town has a large selection of pubs and cafes and the Mill Shop offers high quality souvenirs including Manx woollen tartan, woven in house. On certain days there is the unique opportunity to travel behind the restored mine steam engines the Ant and the Bee and every day in season you can climb aboard the vintage Mountain Railway to reach the top of Snaefell at over 2,000 feet asl and take the Victorian Electric Railway to Douglas or Ramsey. All these opportunities, within a short walk, makes Laxey a great day out for all the family.

Thanks for posting! I was there twice - [ for the TT races- back in 1966-67.. Great engineering. Visits inside the mine were not possible back then.

On the contrary to what ammar500 seems to suggest, the largest surviving Noria in Hamas in Syria is 20M (65'7.4") in Diameter, whereas the Lady Isabella is 72'6" Diameter which is 22.1m. From the information available it supports the claim that the Lady Isabella is the worlds largest waterwheel. I did hear mention of some 100' waterwheels, but haven't found anything online to substantiate that and I guess if they still remained they would have a web presence?

The wheels in Hama Syria are Low Head (1 to 2 m weir) wooden under shot wheels used for raising water for irrigation, dating from Roman times (with ongoing maintenance replacing parts as they wear.) I saw them in 1994? and watched while they repaired one with basic tools. the wheels tha still existed were very impressive. don't remember how large. the plinth for the largest site where the wheel was missing indicates a wheel of similar size would have been massive for Roman times.

Oddly, the wheel is misaligned with the shaft that it reciprocates.
I was there in 1979, to celebrate 1000 years of the Manx Parliament.

Thank you ammar500. You may be right but the water wheels of Hama are not very well documented in the west and I cannot find out the exact diameter of the largest one still turning today. They certainly are very impressive but somone needs to research them better. Their history is impressive, well in advance of any others I have seen. As for size, please refer to the link which I will try to add to my description .

Delivery: 250 imperial gallons (1,100 l) of water a minute from the Laxey mines some 200 yards (180 m) away and 1,500 feet (460 m) below ground ( ref. Wiki)

Regardless of whether Syria or the Isle of Man has the largest water wheel, the Lady Isabella is the largest working example Hama and this is what the Isle of Man boasts. Unless anyone can identify a larger working example?
