  • A hydrophilic catheter is a type of urinary catheter that is coated with a special material that makes it easier to insert into the urethra. This type of catheter is commonly used for short-term or intermittent catheterization and can be an effective tool for managing urinary incontinence or urinary retention. However, like any medical device, it is important for patients to use a hydrophilic catheter correctly in order to avoid complications.
One common mistake that patients make when using a hydrophilic catheter is failing to properly lubricate before insertion. Patients will sometimes remove the catheter and the water packet from the packaging, then attempt to sprinkle the water over the catheter. This is a messy and inefficient way to lubricate.
Instead, bending the packaging at the top while it's still closed allows patients to break to water packet inside of the packaging. This fully coats the catheter in water, activating its hydrophilic properties. Allow for :60 seconds for the catheter to reach maximum lubrication. A convenient adhesive strip allows patients to keep the catheter struck to a nearby wall while they wait.
Why is lubrication important? Lubricant helps to reduce friction and make the insertion process smoother and more comfortable. If you do not use enough lubricant, or if you use the wrong type of lubricant, you may experience discomfort or even injury during the insertion process.
A hydrophilic catheter can be a useful tool for managing urinary incontinence or retention, but it is important for patients to use it correctly in order to avoid complications. Proper cleaning, gentle insertion, adequate lubrication, and timely removal are all key to the successful use of a hydrophilic catheter. By working with our Treatment Specialists, patients can help to ensure that they use their catheters safely and effectively.
