- Continued from Blandford Forum through Charlton Marshal to Spetisbury and Bailey Gate S&D railway from operations in the 1960's to 20 years later in the early 1980's.
The remains of the railway track bed and some cuttings I filmed then have now gone leaving only one arch as evidence of the grand old days of steam railways.
I always thought as a child in the 1960's this line would be here forever with all that work to construct, it took around 2 years and built to last a thousand years, only to last little more than a life time.
My memories.
The Bournemouth Pines express used to pass through Spetisbury at 5pm every day,
One evening I was walking along the track near my primary School at Spetisbury. I could here the heavy puffing sound as the express was pulling out of Blandford station. The steep embankment crossed over the water cress beds and there was a slight dip in the track about a mile long. As the train went through the cutting at Charlton marshal all went quite. Then in the distance the engine appeared this time with a lower sounding faster puff. The driver would make full use of the dip in the line to gain speed the train was now approaching me very fast. the only thing I could do here was run like hell to this telegraph pole and rap my arms around it just in time. The wind and noise and being so close as the train rumbled by I could see the driver hanging out of the cab he blew the whistle and said something couldn't make it out though I could guess. Then there was that nice familiar oily smoke smell as the train disappeared through the cutting at Spetisbury. Great days.
Dr Beeching known to be the axeman of the railway branch lines. I remember at the time late 1950's there were many strikes and transporting freight and commuting by road became more popular and convenient which I would say led to the branch lines demise. The branch lines could not support themselves financially. In the video you will see the construction of the new Blandford By-Pass from brewery arch. These days with the ever rising cost of road transport Could the branch lines make a come back I sure do hope so. In the industrial age of the1800's land owners fought against the railways now we're fighting to get them back.
Great to.see this thank.you. what a tragic waste
Very very good filming.
Sad and depressed the s&d now gone
As a Boy I stopped the Train at Spetisbury Halt ,by the emergency pull chain. I was in a carriage without a corridor.
The glorious S&D needs to be reopened COMPULSORILY purchasing any land that has been built on and reconstructing the embankments and bridges! Roads have come to a standstill!
cool
Over the last 60years or so,we have seen our once great steam railway system destroyed, leaving just a hint of what could have been the envy of the worl. Such awful decisions, lies and the need for `PROFIT` is now the norm throughout our country. Once pride and respect are taken from any industry its demise is a foregone conclusion. I hope if there is such thing as reincarnation....I hope I return as a station cat,to lay on a warm sunny platform and watch the steam trains go by !!
soundnicetome yea! WE NEED IT BACK!
It's so sad
soundnicetome atleast we still have the train bridge!
Does anyone have film / pictures of between bailey gate and corfe mullen halt as i used to live next to the railway line in the 60s to the 90s
There is film of Bailey Gate on this channel. There are quite few pics of Corfe mullen I have seen in the past. Try a search then checkimages.
This is my school but now it's different
Hi Saffron, I was lucky to be on the very last train over all the Somerset and Dorset, the LCGB Railtour on Sunday 6 March 1966, with 35028 Clan Line from London Waterloo to Bournemouth and via Blandford Forum to Templecombe, then 2 Ivatt 2 6 2 locos via Evercreech Junction and Glastonbury to Highbridge. Then it was with Modified 34013 Okehampton on via Weston Super Mare and Bristol Temple Meads to Mangotsfield, before the train was reversed to Bath Green Prk by a Hymek diesel hydraulic loco. Then the closing chapter of the northern part of the S and D was with the historic last ever departure from Bath Green Park being behind modified 34013 Okehampton and unmodified 34057 Biggin Hill. The Western region inspector I read told the crews they could go as hard as the wanted, with the result that there was very vociferous smoke stack music, like a firework display that set alight many cuttings for the very last time. We returned to London Waterloo behind 35028. In mid March 1967 I was on a steam Railtour that traversed the Totton to Fawley, Brockenhurst to Lymington, Bourmemouth to Blandford Forum line remaining part of the S and D and definitely the last ever steam train of all on any part of the S and D s also Blandford Forum, behind a standard 80XXX 2 6 4 tank loco.We finished with the Wareham to Swanage , where I left the Railtour, comng home on a DEMU and on a normal steam hauled train to Waterloo, Peter, Upper Clapton London unfortunately lost my left foot and lower leg below the knee in a very rare through the knee amputation mid march 2016, due to Polio and Rheumatic Fever at age 8, but am starting walking retraining on a prosthesis at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore N W London on 12 May.
Where is the location seen at 3:52 ? I'm puzzled, as it does not seem to match anywhere on that stretch of the S&D.
Your right it isn't. I just added that bit of footage to create a sort of effect of the line to Spetisbury. Not sure exactly where this bit of archive footage relates to.
There is clearly some sort of station with a 'dip' in the platform and a crossover, possibly disused. A little bit later the train appears to pass what looks like an M7. I doubt that it is anywhere S&D at all. *Possibly* somewhere on the ex-L&SWR further east in Hampshire maybe, looks more that sort of countryside? All a bit of a guess.....
Good film is it out on dvd ?
peter waygood Not as far as I know.
It's probabley been said a million times already......such a waste
IN THE UK EVIL CRIMINAL FAT CATS HAVE SEVERAL CARS, HUGE WAGES THAT SHOULD BE UNLAWFULL, WHILST WE SUFFER LOW WAGWSAND BENIFITS , WITH PUBLIC TRANSPORT CUTS IN THE SO CALLED EQUAL SOCIETY THAT DOES NOT EXIST IN THE UK, BUT DOES EXIST IN MOST MAINLAND EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AND OUR CORRUPT GOVERNMENT WOULD BE UNACEPTABLE IN MAINLAND EUROPE.
