Rented a room in Freda for part of the summer while attending Michigan Tech 86'. Lots of time on the beach but no swimming... too cold like ice water! I have ONE polaroid picture standing with the cliffs behind me. Seems like the road was not paved then when I use to run for miles working out. Even camped out on the shores using a canoe and paddling above the dam.
A lasting legacy of environmental pollution...sounds about right. I notice they didn't mention the arsenic, mercury,, and copper contaminating the lake from that nice black sand
You are encouraging people to trespass. I know you did not get permission to go on this site because I own it. Because of individuals like yourself I have to carry liability insurance. Please respect private property. I have tried to post it only to have the signs removed many times!!
@@djokicmetamora Thanks again... I'd prefer not to see bears at all shy or otherwise. As i remember it the deer flies and the ticks "up there" were bad enough but I sure loved the U.P. and I owe myself another visit next year. :)
Any rock from deep within the Earth, when crushed, can leach out toxic metals and minerals. It does depend on the type of rock, though. When she said the lake is reclaiming the sands - that's not entirely true. The stamp sands were not naturally there to begin with, but are now being 'claimed' by lake Superior, which can choke out fish spawning habitat and is not very pleasant to have for beaches either. Examples of problem stamp sands are the ones at the town of Gay, which are covering Whitefish spawning habitat. Also the sands in Torch Lake near Hancock which has toxic levels of copper, arsenic, mercury and PCBs
NO, NOT TOXIC, I have tested the stamp sand here, and there is NO toxic subtances here. Toxic materials associated with Stamp Sands are NOT in the sand, toxic elements are near by, not IN the sand. Also, the danger to fish spawning in the GAY area is due to covering the spawning beds, not the toxicity of the stamp sands there. There are NO spawning grounds near FREDA in Lake Superior.
Just looking at the place in the video, it looks like a lot of damage has been done to that place by greedy people in the past. It is pretty much RUINED and too many PEOPLE live there.
My mom grew up in Painesdale, and we would go to Agate Beach, south of Freda! It's another world in da UP!
How did I miss this?! I’ve stood on those cliffs to get rock samples before.
There's always something new to discover here!
Just been there, yesterday. Beautiful drive. A nice little town too.
beautiful sunset
Superior isn't *re-claiming* the Champion Mill. She didn't want it in the first place!
Thank you, that was amazing.
YOOPERS are a different breed indeed!
Yes we are
They're great people
Michigan Tec ❤💙💜..copper is king for tecno.
Imagine living there in 1901.

Sounds like a good memory! Should come back and relive some memories!! Take that dip 😉
@@VisitKeweenaw yeah... I owe the cold water of Lake Superior for shaping my entire life and career. A very interesting story.

The “dirty little secret” about the U.P.
Yup! Companies come in, tear the place up then leave. Then years later the federal government has to step in to “clean up” all of this garbage.

Wait...what!?? We visited 2 years ago and never saw a trace of no trespassing signs.
Are you polluting Lake Superior?
Can you see the Northern Lights from here when there is a solar storm?
Many nights.
Property is on the market for sale for only 105k.
Is this near Tapiola?
It's all the way on the west side of the Keweenaw. Due west of Houghton.
I had a friend name of Nick Persha who lived there.
Interesting Video... Thank you. Any wildlife to worry about, say bears for example?
You would be more frightening to them, if there were any around. Black bears are on the shy side unless you see cubs.

I'm surprised the state hasn't put a fence around it and started charging an entrance fee.
Don't give the Republicans any ideas.....
@@Gordie_Howe_Hat_Trick I'm not sure you understand the difference between political parties.
@gordie You mean DemocRats!
State does not own it, I do, it is private property!!
@@karenjackson6076 when did you buy it? It was for sale
my grandfather worked in the Painsdale mine look it up last name Kivari
The creator FAILED to mention: The Stamp Mill IS PRIVATE PROPERTY. Unless you own the mill site, you are TRESPASSING if you set foot on the mill site.
Interesting 🤔
Is the black sand from stamp mills toxic?
Good question, I dont believe so.

Yes it is toxic. Chemicals used in the stamp process. Torch lake is contaminated and so is gay

Middle of Nowhere (period)
Im sorry but you can't call the smoke stack a monolith, unless it is cut from one stone.
@CRAM MARC good point, i didn't even consider that.
It's God's country
Some good moccasins....😉
Neptune ahoy!
