    Have you ever wanted to see what really goes in to making a pop rock song that sounds big and wide? First, you need to make sure that you get the best possible recordings of the instruments. Second, you need lots of layers, and the guitar parts need to have a bit of variation.
    In this video, I am working on a song with David of The Workday Release. We started by recording the acoustic guitar and finding a position that had the right amount of percussive character that fit his finger picked part.

    I like how you did this. Was thinking that looks like a dumb way to play bass and then you said just that. And it does indeed add a lot of energy. I heard that McCartney often used to put bass on at the end too so they were able to be more melodic like that. Love your comment about "wrongness" - all the best records have some wrongness in them! When you hear a song and think "how did they get away with that?!!". 😎

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Punk Duck agreed! We have to serve the song! I very often play bass after at least fleshing out some of the basic melodic and harmonic structure! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren

    Great idea to post the tracking session. When I hear your final mixes, it seems that the tracking process would have been more complicated.
    I would like to see you mix a song in the box with a maximum of 5 plugins (processors). If you have it, please use the bx console E (SSL emulation). I have seen all of your video's, so I think you will propably use mc dsp analog channel, sound toys decapitator, waves L1 (or L2), and waves MV2. You are free to use any delays or verb. And don't cheat and use the excellent sounding tegeler on the mixbus. You are free to use any plugins on the mixbus.
    Have a marvelous time mixing.................

    that Spectrasonics and Datamix stuff you're calling "New York scene" was actually very specifically Record Plant (although probably as a result doing Electric Ladyland at Record Plant, after that Electric Lady put in Datamix originally as well).

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  6 лет назад +1

      Hi weedywet thanks for the insight! I'll talk more to Jack Douglas and Shelly Yakus about it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren

    • @weedywet
      @weedywet 6 лет назад +1

      I generally do (as I always say!... I'm sure Shelly could give you the whole chronology. TO my recollection NO ONE else in NY had a Spectrasonics other than the big custom wraparound Record Plant had in A. They were more common in the South (at Stax and Ardent, for example). When I first started working at Record Plant there were still Datamixes in C and the mixroom although B had changed to API. Not long afterward C went API and the mixroom got its huge 56in custom Trident TSM. Studio A stayed Spectrasonics until they closed. I still miss that place.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks! Great information and insight! Yes, agreed the 60's SpectraSonics wasn't predominant in New York at all, but was in the Southern States. Apparently New York and LA had a few of the consoles from the period (70') this unit is a rebuild/reproduction. Bearing in mind how huge the Record Plant in NY and LA was the impact of the sound of Spectra Sonics was pretty huge! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    Hey, Warren! Thank you so much for all the great videos and podcasts! One question I had was about the what you call "Pedaling" on the guitar. I have always loved the sound of that but never knew how to learn more about it. From what I understand you are playing an arpeggio of one chord over a chord progression? I am just trying to learn more about it. The only videos I can find are about jazz piano and it's a little over my head. An example would be this tune I was working on that had a C arpeggio over a C G F chord progression. Any tips? Thanks again for all you do!

      Produce Like A Pro I have a m-audio that allows 2 inputs either XLR or 1/4 inch. So I can direct in or mic my amp. Problem A) using my amp means no effects it's a clean or distorted channel so everything else chorus, delay, ECT would have to be done post production. Problem B) If I directly plugin then I'm forced to find a plugin that can simulate an amp. In this scenario would you rather mic your amp and add effects or go direct? I've also see that you like to double so try both to see what happens

  • @Shadowsreach1

    I am trying to record my self playing guitar and vocalising at the same time but there is a lot of spill from both mics of my voice and acoustic guitar should I just eq both tracks and compress and everything else? How do the pros do it?

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  6 лет назад +4

      Great question William! The best solution is to use Hypercardioid pattern mics. Many people use a dynamic on the vocal and a small diaphragm condenser pointed down away from the vocal on an acoustic. However in many situations they just let the bleed happen naturally and deal with it in a mix, going for performances! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

      William A-D I'm no expert but if you're trying to record acoustic & vocals at the same time, I don't think it's possible to have absolutely no bleed. You just kinda have to deal with it and focus on EQing to get a good overall sound. If you really want zero bleed, I'd suggest recording them separately. Bleed doesn't have to be a bad thing though. It can add a nice natural room ambience to the performance.

    Some good tips in here, like the orchestration of the guitar parts. Yet I immediately wanted to label this song as christian rock, and I hate labels. I'm mad at myself for having that thought. But maybe this artist should go towards that audience? Could be successful. Wish this didn't sound like inspirational/christian music. Some great ideas in here.

      Produce Like A Pro I think one of the most enviable traits of this channel is the diversity of the artists, and of course Warren's diverse production talents. I look forward to future videos to challenge my sometimes rigid concepts. Cheers,

    Can somebody win a bet against Warren and make him stop shaving for a month? I'm curious what he would look like.
    Just a random thought.
