- kd lang's performance of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" at the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame induction of Leonard Cohen in 2006. Be sure to watch the entire performance. Leonard is in the audience. I hope you will watch Leonard's induction as well, which I also posted.
Mr Cohen said that her performance that night gave him goose bumps. High praise from the man who wrote the song and knew how he thought it should be sung. RIP Mr Cohen.

BEST version of this song I have ever heard….it is a song that IMHO someone has to LIVE in order to be able to really sing it. That’s why younger singers can’t do it justice. KD Lang such an underrated singer who outshines everyone every time. As another commenter said: the phrasing, the volume, pitch…just perfection.

This is a master class on vocal performance. It defines taste. The phrasing is spectacular. She chooses very wisely how to end each note/phrase. The antecedent & consequence pairings are divine. The dynamics are a roller-coaster ride. Mic control. It's all there. It's perfect.

First heard thos song in the 70's and found it depressing, but still interesting. k.d.lang has brought it to life in unimaginable ways. It was written for her before Cohen knew her voice. Incredible. A match made in heaven.

Wow did she pour herself into that. That 12 second forlorn wolf-howl resolving to that soft landing at the end is really one of the great moments in music. Cohen looks half paralyzed with thankfulness.
I truly cannot hear KD sing this enough! It certainly comes from the very depth of her soul, with feeling and emotion in every note!!!! So very proud to share my Canadian, Cree and Irish heritage with her and that the great Leonard Cohen was assured that his amazing song would live forever, with it's true intention of pain and loss in love, in KD's rendition! So many others cut out some of the verses to make it more PC I suppose, but what an insult to the brilliant composer........Cohen is on record, saying that "KD OWNS this song, no one can touch her!" Thank you KD for sharing your amazing gift, without all the glitz, glamour and sexualization that is a major component of so many other "artists" today........truly, your voice and emotion are gifts from God and can stand alone to capture the hearts of those all who have listened! I've heard scores of people try to sing this song. No one else comes near KD; she's sheer perfection. She truly puts her heart and soul into it. It brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it, and I don't even know why!! And she does it...barefoot, LOL!!

She is a true Canadian treasure! If I didn't know better, I would swear that Leonard Cohen wrote this song specifically for her to sing. I have listened to this dozens of times and I have cried each and every time.❤ ❤
There are several exceptional performances of this song. I have yet to find a better one than this. I know other people will have other versions as their own favorites but this one is MY favorite!

It's hard to not tear up watching this. There's so many reasons for it to hit you. This song really was always so beautiful and haunting to me. It's so easy to see why it's been covered so many times. This song is almost perfect. It's so moving and I've always felt that KD Lang covers this song best. She puts a lot of emotion in each and every line of Hallelujah. She's performed this song so many times and each time she does the song justice. I had no idea she had once performed it to Leonard Cohen. Her reaction when he tells her he liked the song really tugs on my heart strings hard. Thank you for posting this back in 2009.

performance, in my humble opinion, is the best cover to date of Cohen's

2010 at the Logies is the best I believe she's so beautiful this is written by Leanord but I believe this is her song.. They both do it so well tho.
My personal favorite is the 2005 Juno performance. Each time she sings it slightly different and for some reason the combinations in that performance enchant me the most.
Best part of this video aside from her amazing voice and rendition of this song. But her interaction with Leonard Cohen actually brought tears. Their mutual respect and admiration is breathtaking.
It never fails- in those moments when I find myself most in need to be touched by the light graceful gaze of heaven, I play this performance & am transported to loftier elevations. Eternal appreciation to L. Cohen & to K.D.'s deliverance- it reaches that place beyond words, just love & warmth.

Effortless, perfection from the greatest female singer since Streisand and delivered with humility. Cohen never put a word on paper without purpose as borne out in this utterly compelling piece of poetry. Isn't life glorious when you can just absorb a performance such as this.

This performance here by KD Lang is another level, another Galaxy. It is in the highest ranks of vocal abilities for this genre.
No one, NO ONE, sings this song as well as k.d. lang, except Leonard Cohen himself. The master gives it up for her at the end, and there is no accolade or tribute better than that. If you don't cry when you listen to this performance, then you've got no soul.

Whatever happened to KD Lang. I remember her from years ago. Hard to forget since she had such a great voice. Hope she records more music.
Oh I'm pretty sure she still performs but I would probably guess it'll be more of a private-sector for people that really can appreciate her music because our music today is shit. Because of horse like that will never die they even after she's expired and left this Earth her music will always live on within our hearts and the ones that are lucky enough to have some of her music I don't ever see her retired but I do see her enjoying life and living the life that she was meant to live and reaping the benefits of all the hard work that she's put into it and I know that she's probably sick and fed up with our world away that it is in the music industry and how it's changed because it has changed dramatically. I've heard a lot of versions of this but this one is one of the best. Nobody is giving kudos to that pianist though, let's face it, would the song be quite as good if that pianist wasn't so on point? The piano he's playing on also adds a rich sound that can't be compared to any other. I think the two of them pull this song together better than either of them alone could have.

I was on a bus today that was being battered by the storm force winds, travelling ten miles to work.... the bus was all over the place.... this song was features on Desert Island Discs I was listening to on my drb on my way in to work..... Watching the sea pound up against the shore ( A55 is a coast road), the bus being blown all over the road.... this song being on the radio made it all a little surreal.........Awesome song and performance.

There has always been people that want to talk about the controversy surrounding this person or that, and KD Lang is one of those targets. Ever notice that it brings out the best and worst of us? Lang is as gifted as best of the best. I could sit and listen to this for hours and walk as a better PERSON to have understood the gifts of life and God. I pity the sour, dour, and petty grinches that shrivel their way through life and don't understand beauty or life or fulfillment. Your hearts are hard and your lives are miserable. These are the things I ponder when I enrich my life with incredibly uplifting music. Thank you KD Lang.

Those are generally the atheists or those angry where the word 'Hallelujah' inspires their hatred for anything remotely Christian. I don't see it as any kind of religion. The Native Americans all had a worth resembling Hallelujah. That tiny minority needs to chill.

While I've heard this adapted to be "Christian", it's actually pretty anti-religion. So maybe the down-thumbs are Christians who actually listened to the lyrics and realized Cohen is a humanist.
It's ok..one cannot grasp the world. Some people wouldn't know beauty if it hit them in the face.
Just guessing...but possibly b/c when people see/hear Hallelujah (a word of praise to God) they expect some type of Christian message to the song. So, as beautiful as she performs this version, there remains the contrast between the unfulfilled expectation of worship and the secular song that emerges (which, when listened to carefully, is rather dark and depressing.... except for the joy of the Hallelujah in the chorus). It is however, in all aspects, a beautiful performance by the musicians and Ms. Lang.
