Ya know...for a long, long time now, the groups like the Amish, Mennonites and a few other Bible based groups that lived the simple and mostly self sufficient life, were given a ..."wink & a nod"...."Oh, how quaint and cute they are with their horse drawn buggies and the men with their long beards and same hats and the women with their 'country' clothing." Not any more. With this country getting crazier & crazier every year....heck, every month, I think these cute & quaint people are finally being recognized and even envied for knowing "something" that the rest of the country has seemingly largely forgotten: the basics of a Bible based, or at least, a morally and ethically based life. There has been a growing trend for quite some time now, of folks trying to get off the grid and emulate how the Amish and the other groups have already been living for hundreds of years. And that is good. As usual, you get my brain cells to start firing...lol..!!
YES, I think they are inspiring many of us. To work your own land and live like this is hard, but in a good way. I would rather have to grow all of my food with the help of my family and spend that precious time together. Now, everyone is out the door - off to work or school for hours...and tired when they come home...As Always I love your input!
I grew up in Jesuit schooling. My experiences from my time there and onwards have reinforced a lot similar beliefs I've had. Work is truly wonderful. May humans never forget the joy of doing so

Well I buy wood from an Amish guy And just because they had too many cows he was going to kill one I lost so much respect for him so we took the cow that is such bull crap and I don't like the way they treattor horses I have seen them horses out in the fields on a 90° day pulling those heavy machinery I just don't think it's right I think it is animal abuse but to kill a cow because you have too many that is stupidity
@lindaatwood5428....I understand how you feel about the cow and the horses, but....I am going to play "Devil's Advocate" for a moment. You didn't tell us if the man was going to harvest the meat from the cow and either keep the beef for his family or maybe give it away? Was this a milk cow, and if so, how old is the cow? Milk cows have a limited number of years, 8-10 years average...give or take a few years...where they produce good milk and are worth the expense of keeping them. After that, they are quite often sent to the slaughter house. Work horses are just that, they are raised and even bred to be work horses, sometimes called draft horses. They are usually bigger and stronger than a typical horse that you put a saddle on and ride for pleasure. They are built for hard work. Have you ever seen an Amish man beating his horse? Do you take care of your car or truck...keep the oil changed regularly, get engine tune-ups once in a while, keep good tires on it, fix the problems that happen? Your vehicle is important to you, it takes you to work & grocery shopping & visiting family & friends and stuff like that. And so are the work horses to the Amish farmers. A man cannot pull a plow or any other piece of farming equipment; he depends on the work horses to do that job. You mentioned it being 90 degrees. That is nothing to a work horse or to a working farmer. The horses are walking slowly and are not huffing & puffing and dropping from heat exhaustion. And at the end of the work day, the work horses are taken care of properly so they will be able to give a good days work the next day. Are there exceptions to this? Yes, like another poster has already said, the Amish are not perfect; they are human just like you and I, and we make mistakes and bad decisions once in a while ( hopefully only once in a while...LOL..! ).

Yes, that's losing money. But they don't have ac for their horses.
It can be hard to have to make those choices.

I thought they got stuck in 1600 A.D. along with the "Peace loving people" who got stuck in the 700 A.D.
