- We took a giant leap of faith and are now renovating a famous castle in Santa Fe, Texas. Welcome to our house restoration and renovation from the very very beginning!
Inspired by the escape to the chateau, doing it ourselves, ghost town living, and demolition ranch, I realized that watching videos is much easier than doing it!
1:06 - Introduction to Money Pit Castle
1:37 - Going to see the castle for the first time
3:10 - Touring inside the house
5:40 - History of Alta Loma and Santa Fe, Texas
7:24 - It's easy to watch hgtv, Escape to the Chateau and Escape to Rural France. But the reality is different.
8:50 - backing out and quitting
10:35 - Time to close on the house and buy it
11:50 - Begin renovations!
Life has changed entirely since then, and I am excited to document our progress for you as we go. We appreciate your support very much.
We have a Patreon if you'd like to join us in the rebuild and regular updates: www.patreon.com/santafecastle

As an American living full-time in France, I have watched my fair share of castle Reno videos. But none have made me giggle, snarffle laugh, almost choke on my wine, or even want to comment on. Your humour will be the thing that will get you two through this… and win all the subscribers. Including moi! Cheers, bravo, bon courage, and I hope the RUclips algorithm gods shine brightly upon you and your bank account. ❤
Thank you! Yes we did it in reverse, a European going to America 😅 Appreciate your support. Lots more to come, let's see what happens 🏰🏰
Agree. Look so forward to watching each video and all the beauty this castle/home will bring.
New sub here. Found you through Dan’s channel. Love your thoroughly engaging humor😂. All the best on your project, I will thoroughly enjoy your adventure. You can do it!! 💕
Ok we’ve chatted on Facebook but this is the first time I’ve heard your voice! I thought you were English, hearing your accent now I think Irish? Scottish? Yes to a Yank you don’t actually all sound the same, lol.. but ok help? Meanwhile best to you and lovely wifey as always. Hoping it’s going well sir. Our work at the cemetery is coming along nicely ty!
Watching for 3rd time to earn you some $
"this is not a hole in the roof, this is the American dream."
🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
I first thought you are going on the route of "this is not a hole in the roof, this is a roof in the hole". Jokes aside, I am rooting for this renovation!
Certainly the ‘American dream’ has acquired a lot of holes recently.
And you are correct. I have been trying for the American dream and thought it a fallacy, then we got a home. Have fun it looks like it could be an amazing home with TLC 😊@mediolanumhibernicus3353

My humble advice - Don't be afraid to reach out to people that know more than you and be ready to learn, break everything into tiny, tiny manageable TO-DO's and finally, don't be afraid to fail. It's the best way to learn.
You're 100% right. You'll see in the next video how much we struggled early on, it was absolute hell. It wasn't until I contacted a few owners of old houses in Galveston that things started to go well for us, and people that had been there done that. We have the right people around us and that's everything.
I have lived near the Castle my entire life. My childhood home is just a few miles down Highway 6 and I pass it every week when I go home to visit with my Mum. I am so happy you are taking this journey and I would love to share a pint with you anytime. We could even have a wee dram of whiskey if you're into such a thing. Cheers! May the renovation gods be with you.
Let's do it! Lots of good places nearby and in Galveston. And one day drinks on the roof
What are the odds? How fun!!!
I grew up in this area and went to grade school in Santa Fe. I used to fantasize so much about this castle. As an adult I became frustrated by the people who owned it - they didn't take care of it and just let it fall apart. I'm so glad its on the way to restoration!
I think they tried and had every intention to restore it. Im thankful they sold to us, they could have easily sold to a developer for more $$$
Will see you soon Neighbor, tours one day ☕🏰☕🏰☕
"If you have tea, you have hope... and when you have hope, anything is possible" 👍❤️
I'll get the t shirts made asap.
☕☕☕☕☕☕
@@MoneyPitCastle Yay!! ☕👍
@@MoneyPitCastle-Most definitely get the shirts made! Tea mugs too! To fund the project! We’ll buy for sure!
I've been looking for this series for months ! Really hyped to see you renovate this beauty !
Thank you! It's here now. Thanks for sticking with us, its my own stupid fault, just procrastinating and making excuses. But no more excuses now. We are officially RUclipsrs and lots coming now!
Same!!! I saw this months ago when it started and it got lost in my feed which is chock full of the RV and sailing people that I follow. LOVE your Queen pic, LOVE the humor, LOVE the haters! Especially summergain! Let’s hope they keep things up with their special brand of encouragement. WINK WINK. How hilarious would it be, at the end of allllll of this, once you’ve got things done and dusted, if they come on the show for a little visit? Time to start a Patreon page so we can pay for their airfare when the time comes. Clearly, someone with that much hate for Americans will need to be flown in. At some point, you also need a visit from Chip and Joanna. They restored a castle too. But alas, it has a little less … personality.
@@jjdicarloutube THANK YOU. So I watched the chip and Joanna thing and one of the first things she said was "these are the types of projects that make people bankrupt" LOL. I switched off at that point
@@MoneyPitCastle HAHAHAHA!!!
@@MoneyPitCastleI❤it! I would have bought it too!! I once owned a historic money pit. No regrets
I’m so glad you and your wife are saving this place. It’s so unique.
Agreed! Thanks so much for watching
I live in Houston and have driven by this place many times. Can't wait to see what you do with it, although I am 9 months behind, but will start catching up now.
Happy to see you uploading another video. Just remember that when times get hard and you think you can't continue with this journey just remember that the smallest improvements will lead to a treasured experience that you and us viewers will get to experience with your videos. I wish you the best with the project than please make more videos on your progress no matter how small it is. The more videos and followers the more you will be compensated. Best of luck to you and your wife.
For sure. You'll see what we have done and the stupid mistakes we made early on. Things are going great now though.
Appreciate your support very very much 🏰🏰🏰🏰
Man... I hope you guys are successful. A lot of us are out here, pulling for you. Best wishes, from N.E. Georgia!
❤️❤️❤️ We will be, it's just going to take much longer than we thought it would. Appreciate you joining us 🏰☺️

THANK YOU! When our children were young, they’d know we were nearing Galveston when they spotted the castle. Many a time, we pulled over to daydream about living in it. We now live in Galveston in my husband’s childhood home. The day I found out the castle was for sale, I was headed to Houston, via Hwy 6, to hear our eldest, Jaron, perform with his band, India Tigers in Texas. Between bands, I told him about the sale. He and other musicians started “talkin’ up” buying it as a musicians haven! Jaron lives in Galveston at the National Historic Artist Lofts. Becky Major is the manager of the lofts. Heard Becky got to tour the castle. So envious! I wish you two all the best, and good fortune in this amazing endeavor!❤️😎
Thank you! Yes she came and had some great advice for us! That was turning point really, was to contact other old house/building people and found out what worked for them.
Thank you for making these videos. As a disabled person not able to get out there and do this stuff its a joy watching y’all do this!
You're very welcome I'm glad you enjoy it! The next video is something else!!
Same!
I can’t wait till the next video! The commentary is everything 😂! All hail the new King and Queen of Santa Fe🙌🏼
❤️❤️❤️❤️
So glad you are bringing this beautiful castle 🏰 back to life, I've lived in Santa Fe for 39 years and have driven past it so many times and wondering what it looked like on the inside. ❤😊
It looks a lot different now inside too! That's where we are at right now, we did the demo and part of the structure repairs. Just about to start the rebuild inside of the exterior walls and a new roof!
It’s just amazing to finally see inside!!!!! I’m honestly freaking out a bit!!!
New subscriber here! As a still young country, we need to learn not to tear down our history, but rather save it. If we keep tearing down we will have nothing left to show what our efforts created. I wish you the very best on this journey.
Thanks for joining in Elizabeth! I agree with you 100000000000000% (at least)
Good luck with your project!!
Thanks !! 🏰🏰🏰
God Speed@@MoneyPitCastle! You are saving and preserving history! I only WISH I could do something like this!
@@jacobhawley60 you can mate. Nothing special about me, just a regular person with stupid ideas 😅
@@MoneyPitCastle Not regular. You are a preserver. Generations after you will be qble to enjoy this beauty. Thats big. There's a bigger picture.
My first thought: burn it down. It doesn't deserve to suffer any longer.
I’m all in! Let’s do this! God save the Texas Castle! 🏰
Absolutely!
I am so glad you didn't walk away from this lonely yet gracious castle. Incredibly beautiful!!!
Me too! We had many regrets (you'll see in the next video) but it was the best decision ever.
Y’all are doing an amazing job. I hope someone decides to sponsor y’all. I lived in Galveston and worked in Alvin. I passed the castle everyday. I always wanted to climb the fence but I’m so excited seeing what your doing . Your family will have great pride when your done . I’m happy to see it being saved.
Ha ha it's a hard one to climb. One day you won't have to and can just come and see it!
Everybody's going to want to watch this transformation!! It will pay for itself in the long run. Super excited to watch this be restored and for you to add your own touch. Good luck thanks for including us on your journey
I hope so! Costs are a little frightening but it'll get done I know it
I think its going to be great! Hard work, determination and a LOT of money. Make it your passion and dont plan on trying to make money from it, that wont happen. 4 acres and a castle that you two restored and built, history in the making for generations of your families. I've been waiting for an update and had thought y'all gave up, glad to see that was not the case! It's going to be a long term commitment, and it will be well worth it!
That's exactly how I feel. Just one big accomplishment and we would have done a little part for history. But no we won't give up, we have had major regrets in the early stages but not anymore. It was the best decision we ever made.
Appreciate your support very very much 🏰☕🏰☕🏰☕🏰
Stumbled across your channel! Haven't been to Santa Fe, Tx, in 30 years! So glad someone took on this gem! Wishing you and your wife the best of luck! 🩷🌿💙
Thanks very much for been here! It will be the pride of the town when we are done 🎉🎉🎉
This is hilarious! I truly enjoy seeing your face in the hole of your roof, telling us a story that makes me feel so much better about the investment we made around the time you made yours. We too have holes, water issues, and a long list of to dos. It can be extremely daunting when funds are tight and the only carpenters in our family live thousands of miles away. I would have learned had I been a boy and not the baby girl of the family. I guess it’s never too late. I wish you the best.
I'm very very glad to hear that ! A sense of humor got us through the first few months. Good luck with your project, I know the anxiety is painful at times but it'll be worth it when you are finished 🏰☕🏰☕
@@MoneyPitCastle 🙏🏻
I wholeheartedly support this project. "It's not the destination, it's the journey." Are things like this ever financially worth it? No. Will you ever financially recover from this? Probably not. If you completed the project and wanted to sell it, would you get your investment back from it? Nah. Will you meet a lot of interesting people and contractors and such along the way? Most likely. And you'll learn a lot of important lessons about carpentry and electrical work along the way. And probably a few lessons about money. Maybe more than a few lessons about money... but you'll learn to find the fun in it. And that's what matters.
Thanks! You're absolutely right. It's been a massive learning curve so far and lots to come. Lots more we could have done with our money if that's all we cared about, but this is just going to be very satisfying once it's done, however long it takes.
Appreciate you taking the time to write all that and watching the video

Beyond the enormous challenge of breathing life back into this landmark is managing a quality you tube channel. So far, you're doing an amazing job at both. You must have already decided it's "do or die" for both. You have an amazing channel with excellent content presented in a unique and effective way. What could go wrong?! Come on, Corey, check your texts. Thank you for sharing your journey.
For sure! Do or die is right. We are stuck but maybe that's what the building needed! I'm gonna spam Corey again 😅
Life's a journey and it sounds like this castle picked you both to take on that journey together. Many challenges may lay ahead; but treasured memories will be formed and a unique home ( or should i say castle ) will be brought back to it's former glory hey days. It's great to see someone with vision take on this challenge and not let it become yet another statistic of time, bulldozed from existence and lost forever!
Exactly! Too special to at least not try 🏰🏰🏰
This needs to be a tv series!
I’m glad y’all decided to go for it!! Can’t wait to watch the process. 💜
Thank you Shelly! We are glad we did too. Thanks for sticking with us, lots of videos coming up now.
Found your channel a long while back because of Brent, been subscribed and waiting, hoping something would materialize, and it has! If you actually move into this place, with the accent and the fact you're in Texas, you're gonna get noticed.
Thanks for sticking with us. Lots to come now!!
@@MoneyPitCastle Glad to hear it!
Please continue! Be like Dan the man! From ' escape to rural France'. Ypu can learn a lot from just watching his process and he lives in a tent onsight too😂👍
For sure I'll check him out. Thanks!
Oh I watch him yes he's good 🏰🏰🏰🏰
the fact that you saw a hole in the roof as an opportunity to make a video is a good sign!! good luck with this, this is a big big task that you have but perfect for yt i think!
Thanks!
WOW!!! I had actually forgotten about this. I watched Brent's video the day he posted it and came over here and subscribed immediately. Kept checking back and no videos came and, like I said, I totally forgot about this. This just popped up in my feed and I thought OMG hahaha so here I am. Back with the daily/weekly check in to see if anything is posted. I truly think if you post more often, this would take off and become a HUGE channel which in turn, will help give you funds to restore. Hope to see more soon. Glad to see life in this channel again.
I appreciate you sticking around. I was looking at analytics and yes I did lose a large number of subscribers that I got from Brent ❤️
That is really encouraging words thank you. Would be awesome if we can make a bit extra each month on YT for it.
@@MoneyPitCastle The way people love watching restoration videos, especially something as cool as this, my bet is you would make more than a "bit extra" if there were weekly updates. Check out Matt from off the ranch. He restored a house.." abandoned mansion" and is now restoring a "abandoned resort." Check out his view counts on those videos. I bet it paid for itself plus some. I know I am one of the hundreds of thousands that followed the mansion and now following the resort. Literally checking a few times a day hoping for a upload and wishing that current upload would not end. I know ALL of the restoration videos I have watched over the years from probably hundreds of channels at this point, people are glued to it even asking for longer videos. Although, IMHO shorter more frequent videos would really boost the channel, views and profits rather than a longer video here and there. Stick with it, give updates OFTEN. Make sure to put restoring abandoned castle etc in title, hopefully the algorithm will kick in and start suggesting your videos to people who watch restoration videos and hopefully more and more people will be here to watch. Especially something as cool as this. I am busting my britches waiting for the next video upload :)
Yay! I’ve been waiting for this! Can’t wait for your next video!, no matter what, right or wrong, I would also have listen to the Blue Power Ranger.
And now I wish I'd have ended the video with "it's Morphin time!"
I live near the area and have passed by this castle wishing to see it restored to its former glory for years. Too many places like this just fall apart in time. You sir are a courageous man, thank you!
Appreciate that very much, yeah it's a bit overwhelming but we just get on with it, we will get there eventually.
been going by this castle for years I say to you good sir good luck to you, I really hope you restore it to its full glory I know its only words but I hope for the best.
Thank you! The support means more than I can say.
Ok I'm hooked! I was intrigued when you were with Brent because I love the history of old, forgotten places. Can't wait until the next video.
Thanks Gail! Yeah his channel is awesome, couldn't have asked a better person to come check it out
I watch Brent too!!! I bet he gave you some great encouragement and ideas! Will have to go watch that one …
Oh, have you found Goodwoods British Store in Friendswood? I recognize the CRIII mug. I'm so glad the videos are coming out now, and I can't wait for your next Patron Day! I was so sad I couldn't make the first one, but I'll be glad to see the progress at the next one!
😅😅 I think that's where Kristin got it from. We lived in Friendswood before moving to Santa Fe.
The next Patreon day will be HUGE ! As soon as that new roof is on, it's on.
These video are amazing to watch! Thank you so much for doing this!
My maternal family brought property and settled on the opposite side of hwy6 from the castle in the 60s and Grandma kinda stumbled upon the castle while on a walk not long before it changed hands to the Pignataros. Ever since then the castle has held a great deal of fascination (mainly because the legend at the time was it was built for a mistress and who doesn’t like spicy gossip) My family has been in this part of Texas for generations and I could bore you with countless more stories of family connections that run all by that castle.
Of course y’all hear stories like this all the time but please know that what the two of you are doing is truly bringing light and beauty into the world and is so greatly appreciated.
That's amazing to hear that you saw it all the way back then. I know it looked very very different. We are in touch with a few relatives of original owners and past owners, they all got in touch with us. That keeps us going sometime! I know the place means a lot to so many people. Thanks very much for watching
I'm excited to see the progress you have made. Bring on the videos! 🙂
I do hope, though, that you took my previous advice to stop the roof leaks before proceeding with renovating the interior. It is the first step!
welcome back
Glad you decided to try and save it after all. I'm looking forward to seeing it come back to life.
It was the best decision!
You might not know what you are doing but you are a real character and very funny. RUclips loves characters. I can't wait to watch this channel grow and get some advice revenue
Oh I get it now. Ad revenue? Yes I hope too!
Love the Royal Mail postbox out front. Have you considered a daily update similar to how 'Escape to Rural France' does? He does a little bit every day and it brings all the subscribers along for the ride- the highs, the lows, the heart ache etc. His channel has grown about 100k in a month. Even updates like you strimming the grass out front, repairing and painting the fence would keep us all interested. You have a weird piece of American history there and it needs to be saved. Bring us all along for the ride - and I'm sure many will happily donate to your renovation fund. Good luck from the UK.
I think I should. I think I sometimes have too much high expectations for videos but you're right - people will like day to day things too. I'll look at his channel and copy him
@@MoneyPitCastleJust a 15 minute update 5 days a week would keep the viewers hooked as well as helping income from views. You might even get some sponsorship from diy companies etc. Do make time for time off RUclips too or it will get all consuming.
I completely forgot about this! i subbed after seeing it from brent. so glad to see another video!

I'm so happy to see an eccentric old building being saved and restored. So many older quirky buildings are being torn down and replaced by cookie cutter houses. This is your folly, a very traditional British pursuit, you've got a follow from this fellow Brit living in the US.
Thank you fellow immigrant!. I'm gonna contact Kevin from Grand Designs and he can do a special lol
In the UK they'd list that as move in ready, slight damp.
LOL "one previous owner.".

As a local, when we heard that it was up for sale many of us thought we would one day drive by it and it would be gone. The area is growing in apartment complexes daily or so it seems and we figured this would be the end of the Santa Fe Castle... I was transporting a railroad crew yesterday when we saw construction going on there. All of us have lived in the area for a good period of time and I was telling them about seeing your episode on ghost town living when one of the gentlemen pulled it up. Then he looked a little further and found money pit Castle😅😅😅. The other guy had talked about eating their back in the seventies when it was an Italian restaurant which was part of the history I had never heard before. I know many of us are following the progress as we drive by daily. Good luck in this adventure 👍👍

I just found your channel today. I must say that I am already fascinated by your wit and storytelling. I am quite excited to watch the restoration progress in your future videos!
I've always thought it would be so satisfying to restore an older home but lack of opportunity for just the right property and lack of money for such an undertaking prevented me from ever realizing such a dream. My sisters and I used to stare out the window on our way back and forth from Stafford to Galveston waiting to see that castle. We had our own stories and theories about it, and we loved it. Growing up poor and not traveling much it was one of the most exotic and historical things we knew.

I'm excited to see your progress and laugh out loud at your humor
Thank you for daring to save history brother
For sure, it makes people stop and captures the imagination. It's worth trying to save, there's nothing like it.
Thanks for been here, we have a long way to go !!
Volunteers…. Tents…barbecue…shovels and a Bush hog….it just sounds like a really good time 😮😅
Absolutely lovely my brush hog.
Dude I had to subscribe!
Why not turn part of the castle into a hotel. I live in San Antonio. I know there's not a lot to see in your area but I figure it will be a perfect place to stop along the way as you're near a highway. People from England may also be interested in staying there for the experience of a castle in Texas (with sunny weather).
Close the castle during the hottest months because English people may not be able to handle our 106 degree heat.
Appreciate your support mate! 🏰🏰🏰
We are 30 minutes to Galveston and 30 minutes to Houston, so it's in a great spot! We need to spend heavy on structure repairs and then after that - yes, we do want to have guests and such from all over the US and world. We are starting to see the power of the internet!
English people will hate this weather, my mum hasn't been back since her first visit 😅
Save the Castle !!! Good luck
🏰🏰🏰🏰🏰
All I got from this was that if you've got tea, anything is possible. And that explains a lot about the last 300 years of history, wow.
It's basically the bottom line for sure 😅
Houston resident here...I was watching your stories on instagram and decided to look up your location. I was SUPER surprised to find out that you were in the area! I cannot wait for a tour or to even stay over night! Already told my wife to prepare herself in medieval glory.
Oh yeah you're not far at all. Haha. Hopefully see you when it's safe enough for tours !
I am in with you. Excited to see all that you'll be doing. I'm here to watch and give you positivity :-)
Welcome back!

You only have one life. Do what you want to make yourself happy!! People fix the “impossible” every day. If some famous figures had listened to some of the people in their lives they would have given up & we wouldn’t have some of the things we do now. Keep doing you & with every negative comment take it & use it as strength to prove them wrong!!!!💕
Thank you Angie! Exactly what we are doing. Appreciate your nice comment 🏰☕🏰☕
When something has that kind of pull on you, you absolutely have to do it. If you can see it finished in your mind, you will find a way. Good luck with it!
Exactly right. I'm very glad we did now as bad as things get, no regrets
You have done the right thing 4 acres too incredible. So many things you can do with the Castle when finished including living in it too can't wait to see your journey 🙏💎💙
Thrilled to see you both are still with it! I left a note on your gate back months ago, trying to encourage y’all. Hope you get monetized soon to get a least the roofs fixed. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻. I don’t have $ but could help some Friday’s. ~ Texas
Thank you! Almost at the monetization levels already actual 🏰🏰
Came and subbed thanks to Brent, so glad I never left. I currently live in northern Houston, so having this be so close to home makes it all the more special :3 Can't wait to see more, so worth it!
🏰🏰🏰 Hello! Thanks so much for watching
Looking forward to watching your continued success with the castle!
Appreciate that! Stay tuned 🏰🏰🏰🏰🏰🏰
Yeah for you both !!! I’ve with you totally ! Always been my dream to restore something with great history and character… like saving a life !
If I lived near I’d help you restore …. Can’t wait to follow your journey with this beautiful new home to share with the world now ! 🎉
Go for it!
And thank you for your support 🏰🏰🏰
I just saw this video and you forgot to email me for advice. The place looks great on the outside with elements of the bad taste of the 70's-80's mixed with classical elements on the inside. In other words a beautiful jewel that needs some love to bring it back to it's full worth. Yeah, it is a lot of work especially the roof, but you don't find buildings like this in America and it deserves to be restored. I wish I could help, but I am a disabled senior. You are so lucky to have gotten this place and once you finish it, you will be glad you did this. Plus you will have learned a lot. Hugs!
Thanks so much! You're helping just with your advice and watching the videos.
Appreciate you, there's lots to come!
Oh, super excited. I'm really looking forward to watching your progress and adventures..
Thank you for joining us!!
I remember this castle from my childhood. My grandmother's lived close by. How funny I stumbled across this video.
The algorithm is psychic sometimes! Appreciate you watching. Lots and lots to come!
WOW! My husband and me bought a Log Cabin Money Pit in Livingston Texas. This is my first time seeing your channel and I'm intrigued. We said the same thing you did, it was huge, and just a shell, unfinished. Just a shell and Logs with two floors. It had a cement slab. it does have windows and doors, but some need replacing. We moved here from Connecticut, on a whim and a prayer...and also fell in love with Texas.
We both said NO WAY at first, and then we couldn't get out of our God damned heads.
Too much work! no plumbing, electricity. septic, AC, Framing on the inside, just a box with logs we fell in love with. we were lucky to have a cabin on the property to live in, so we DID IT!!!!
2 years in, we are still working on it and happy we took this journey.
I look forward to seeing what you do and how...we are doing it ourselves too.
Wishing you much love and joy in the process!!! We arent far away so when we get the chance I love to visit!
Haha that's the one. Yeah we have gone back and forth too. Wondering what we have done, but clinging onto it. How is your log cabin now? Is it a home?
I so admire you for taking that on and I look forward to seeing how you go.
Thank you! It'll work out eventually. 🏰🏰
I’m in can’t wait for the next installment. Matt restoring his abandoned resort and now you two crazy kids and a castle! My favorite type of YT content!
Mine too. It's odd been the one making it 🫣🫣
Thanks alot for watching us 🏰❤️🏰❤️
Yay! I was hoping you would start posting again!
We are here now! No more long gaps
