True. What a lot of people forget is that teenagers weren't treated as a serious demographic for anything until the 1970s and even then it was limited. Film, TV, music, books, etc. all media was focused on the older established generations until the 70s, on the new adult range (18 - 35) in the 80s and early 90s, and it is only very recently that young adults (say, 12 - 25) have become the primary target audience. You can see this in how big budget action & comedy films switched from R-rated to PG-13/ PG in the early 90s.

Yes, the quality of the performer(s) and the quality/scale of the staging make a big difference, but it is about the song itself.. That's why the writers get a significant amount of the praise etc. Now, to sell your song you need brilliant vocals and these days, crazy staging. That last part helps mostly with the unwashed masses and the televoting. The Juries are supposedly focused on the song itself a bit more. Because the rules focus on the SONG< this is why it is possible that foreign writers and performers can be involved, since it is simply the particular national broadcaster putting forth a song. Winning performers get the trophy, and whatever benefits to their careers, but the prestige of winning for the broadcaster rapidly morphs into the nightmare realization: WHAT THE F*** HAVE WE DONE??? Now e have ot do all the work ourselves!!! 😱😳🤯😭

That's not the case. Culture is not perfectly encapsulated, I would even say rarely encapsulated by Eurovision contestants from any one country. Culture is so much more and Eurovision is more about appealing to everyone else. We in Sweden, have way better music that is innovative in a Swedish way, than the constestants we send to Eurovision. Culture's got nothing to do with Eurovision.

Personally, I don't even think Sam Ryder was *that* good, and I'm from the UK. Top 10 perhaps, but wasn't good enough to deserve 2nd place. He certainly has heart and can sing decently, but the song was not that special. The only thing that stood out from the song itself was that repeated high note on "Space..mAAAN", which was too repetitive and not enough to really elevate that song to top tier status for me.
Seeing Americans react to eurovision is like watching a bulldozer demolish a huge field of perfectly grown dutch tulips. Eurovision isn't JUST a song competition, it's one of the few events during the year where most of Europe come together to scream at our televisions that their favorite should win and the jury sucks ass and should be booted to the moon all with smiles on our faces. It's a cultural phenomenon, a festival, a celebration. You can't even properly describe it words. Eurovision or any of the national competitions that lead up to Eurovision cannot be compared to any other musical competition on Earth. I don't think they know the exact years or dates of different european political issues/corruption throughout the years by heart, to be fair. But they're aware of this one, so of course they'd be able to point it out, but miss others. They also said it wasn't like it was terrible or anything. It was a good song and I *do* think it would've done pretty good either way, but a lot of votes that got the song first place were political, for sure.

1985 was a great year for Norwegian pop music. Not only did we win Eurovision, we also got a Norwegian artist at the top of the charts in America and many other countries with the legendary "Take on me" by a-ha. The 80's were amazing!
I gotta disagree about the 2022 result without the war. I dont think the UK wouldve won instead of the Ukraine if the war didn't happen. I believe Spain would've won over the UK as they had a higher televote pointage over the UK. Im not mad at the result of 2022 though as Ukraine always brings excellent entries in Eurovision.
The reason why Luxemburg was so popular in the 1960s and 1970s is because of the way the contest is organized. See, it's technically not a competition between countries, but between national broadcasters (BBC for the UK, ARD for Germany, TVE for Spain, etc.). And so, RTL for Luxemburg. The thing is, because Luxemburg is so tiny a country, it broadcasts its programmes for neighboring countries and markets: a French-language radio station for France and Belgium, a Dutch one for Belgium and the Netherlands, a German one for Germany, etc. So the bosses at RTL would play their song over and over again until the national juries, through the mere exposure effect, came to like it 😂
The UK wouldn't have won if there hadn't been a war. Sam Ryder didn't do as well in the televote as the likes of Spain, and Moldova, so it's likely that Spain would've won instead. But also, Stefania is a great song and also very popular so there's still that chance that Ukraine could've won purely based on that song. Ukraine bring it every year, they're one of the best nations
I 100% agree. Everyone who says Stefania only won because of the war seriously underestimates Ukraine. They are amazing at Eurovision and qualified every single time so far. It's just one good song year after year and from what I can tell by the Vidbir songs 2024 is not going to be any different

Lockdown preventing her from recording the actual songs she wanted to take to the contest, 3. Europeans being xenophobic.

I don't think the UK entry would have necessarily won without the war. Who wins is not always the song critics say was "the best", and I won't even say the UK had the best song in 2022. The ukrainian song *was* at least one of the best, and deserved the win. Even without war bonus - if it existed that much critics say it did.
I really disliked your comment about the Kalush Orchestra win. Ingnorant people like to brush it off as pity win. These same people forget that this song brought of cultural song, folt notes mixed with modern music and sounds. Initially the lyrics for "Stefania" have been like an ode to a mother, with the narrator speaking of good memories of his own mother. The song talks about how much his mother has aged, invoking a nostalgic past. With the start of the war with russia the people started assosiating Ukraine as the mother in the song. For future refference, you may not like the song, the sound or the meaning but give it the respect it deserves. It feels plain disrepectful to people who this song means so much to call it a "pity win because of the war", especially given the contenct of the events going on right now.

Johnny Logan still makes music, has appearances on German TV (in August on ZDF Fernsehengarten), looks great and sounds the same as back then. Some time after the song contest he struggled with serious alcohol problems.

The Lordi song in 2007 probably was helped by Norway 2006 warming the audience a bit to subgenres of rock. And Voyager (Australia) 2023 did not "fall flat" it did really well

Hopefully Turkey will return to the competition. Their songs were not just boring main stream popsongs but their songs had own colour and national rythm. I miss Turkey a lot. The woman in 1991( Carola) is Swedish Eurovision royalty as she along with one other woman are the only people who's competed for Sweden in Eurovision 3 times which is the most times and Carola have always been top 5 as she came 3rd in 83, 1st in 91 and 5th in 2006
This is a competition -- which means winning or losing is relative : the same song/artist/performance might win one year and lose the next. Each country puts forth a different, original song for this competition -- and sure, there are politics involved, but maybe not as much as you'd think. I mean you said about mäneskin that it's popular and known in the US. Which is probably why you've heard it before and why you enjoy it more -- because it sounds more familiar. On the other hand, many songs that have won the competition sound more like what other Europeans are used to hearing. It's sad though that artists such as yourselves prefer to put down other artists (I'm thinking of the comment on Ryback's performance...) rather than try to understand what other people might have liked about those European songs. Frankly, seeing the review of winners, not only did I hear some of my favourites again, but I also appreciated some songs I didn't quite like the year they were actually performed -- so there is room here for appreciation rather than a quick : excellent, good, not good, top 10.
47:00 Nah, Stefania was still one of the strongest performances that year. It would probably still win or at the very least would be close second. It was a culmination of all the ethnic + modern performances we had from Ukraine for past 10 years and this one was especially beautiful, due to the lyrics. Sam had good song and good set, I still think he would fall flat with the mainland votes, that would opt for the ethnic piece. Remember that people vote for 10 countries. UK didn't get as traction that year. If not Stephania - I would even dare to say that Spain would have taken it. Sam was fifth in the Public vote and did not get a lot of highest scores - even if you cut Ukraine altogether and moved everyone in one spot - Spain would actually get few dozens points more than UK. Which is important because they were only 7 points apart. European also like their rap. And it was a rap and spoken word year as well. With Moldova and Serbia also hitting it extremely hard from the public. So without the war Ukraine likely would still have won, because they had the best rap piece that night. They only needed 275 points from the Public, which isn't a shocking value (Moldova got 239). Their Jury was better than UKs public so they had a lot more space within their public score. His only chance would be only that the Jury scores would change as well. But at that point people would just riot, because he got way too many Jury points already. Funny enough with the Jury scores being so pushed into UK and Sweden - there could have been a chance where Hold Me Closer would end up higher than Space Man as well. They had similar Public vote and 30 points Jury difference. But Kornelia did better with Slavic and Scandinavian countries, which with her getting those 12s instead of Kalush, she could push in front of Sam. Other important thing is that - this is post C19. The vibe on the continent was still very tense - war or not. In top of the public you had super playful ethnic and party songs or very down to Earth normal life songs. A song sung to a mother would still do better than a radio hit about being a sad space man. 48:10 Tattoo is also a good example of why Jury system should be reworked. She got way too boosted by them and Käärijä got left in the dust. Mind you another year where a record was broken - as he had the strongest public vote score aside Ukraine. He almost hit the 400 score and only reason he lost was because Jury gave Loreen almost as much points.
2023 the jury votes made sure Sweden got the eurovision for ABBAs 50th anniversary. Public voted Finland/Cha Cha Cha #1 with a landslide 376 points - Loreen was second with 243 points... Sadly 95% of the time the best song doesnt win in eurovision due to neighboring countries jurys voting each other. It is getting better, but the jury still has too big part in votes.
And be grateful we have juries, they make sure there still is artistry left in ESC. Otherwise karaoke songs like Cha Cha Cha would dominate ESC every year. Like they used too..
Oh get over it already. Loreens victory was a combination of televotes and jury. You need both to win. Luckily the jury saved us from a gimmick winner. I would say neigbouring voting and most of all diaspora voting are big problems with televoting.

I personally loved Stefania and don't even remember UK one. It was definitely number 1 for me that year. I didn't vote, but I really enjoyed it. Also spannish song was absolutely amazing. I don't understand how it scored so low. I noticed that all american reaction videos show completely different opinions to the most europeans. You have completely different taste in music than most europeans.
Luxembourg was so successful because they imported both writers and performers from other countries. It was also used by others from time to time. Eg a certain french Canadian we know of won for Switzerland

Nice with Eurovision content, and so much to choose from. I know Schlager has 2nd and 3rd places(maybe also 4th and 5th) and each countrys entries, and yearly recaps(don't remember if it is only ranked by his own preferences or full videos of the actual results), but that could be really fun to see your reactions to, along with last place entries(remember before 2004 there were only one finale, so after 2004 last places can either be last place in the finale or overall last place from semi finals)or maybe the entries this year when all are revealed or a reaction to the recap and voting/results, if you rather wanna go into this years contest blind at first.
Great review, gents! Good to see you diving into the background, culture and spirit of the contest, too, not just rubbishing the music (especially from the earlier eras) simply because it's outside your familiar zone, as a lot of reviewers seem to when they react to these videos. Although of course you had to get some digs in about some of the bands and artists, especially from the 80s onwards, but that's part of the joy of watching Eurovision since then - seeing what craziness will appear! Traditionally, the winner of the contest hosts it the following year, although occasionally that has not happened, most recently when Ukraine won it but the UK hosted (because of the ongoing war making it impossible to hold the event in Kyiv). Regarding the UK, my personal favourite of all the entries from my country was Katrina & The Waves' storming pop song "Love Shine A Light" in 1997, which I doubt we will better in a long time, if ever. It earned the biggest winning margin of the contest up to that year and still ranks up there as one of the best winners of all time (adjusted for numbers of entries and voting changes). A mark of the iconic nature of that song is that in 2020 during the COVID pandemic (when the contest could not be held), "Love Shine A Light" was re-recorded as a medley with all the past winners singing a line each as part of a special recorded show. Other great winners from this country were "Puppet On A String" (our first winner), and of course "Making Your Mind Up". BTW, Ibiza is pronounced "eye-bee-tha" or "ee-bee-tha" (the latter is more accurate to the Spanish, but the former is accepted in English-speaking countries).
I respectfully disagree. I think Stefania was a better, more interesting and innovative song than Spaceman. Sure, Ukraine may have gotten a few sympathy votes, I won’t dispute that, but I think they were very worthy winners. And if you check how many views the songs have here on youtube, the official video and the live performance have a combined 96 million views for Stefania compared to 18 million views for Sam Ryder. That says something, doesn’t it? Sam Ryder did well, but Kalush Orchestra had the better song.

And it is song contest, and Stefania as the song is better then Spaceman, I think people like Sam song bc of how he sings it, his performance, etc, but then Stefania has rap, it isn't offten that we see one, so it was interesting for sure, plus instruments, etc, it was great made song, and Spaceman was normal pop song on the end, Sam simply had great vocal performance, but no always.... And I don't know if you watched grand finale live but Sam had very bad performance that day, he wasen't at his best. And I only watched finale that year so it was my first time that I heard that song and it was weak for me, I was really shocked it was so high, but friend told me that Sam is quiet popular in internet, etc. So yeah, even if some sympatic votes that Ukraine got would go somewere else, I don't think it would be UK, a also think that Stefania would still bevin top 5.
I’m also conflicted about this and it would’ve been interesting to see how the scores would have turned out without the war because Ukraine undoubtedly had a very good and unique song. I was okay with that win, not being a huge fan of either Spain or the UK, although it didn’t take many listens for me to grow tired of it. Personally I would’ve wanted to see MARO from Portugal win that year, it’s the only song from 2022 that I still listen to regularly.
I was surprised how often Germany was in second or third place. Also Ukraine did really well even before their win, if you look at the runner-ups in every year. The competition got too big for me. Too many countries, taking too much time to vote. 😅 But if you only look at the contestants: the winners are often the boring ones. Criticize them any way you like. 😂❤ We watch it for the spectacle of the others. (And to win! I don’t believe, even for a second, that any country would choose a contestant in order to lose) By the way: it’s not really the artist that wins. It’s the song/composer!
Ukraine competed once before their first win and it was a low score. Apparently Kirkorov had inserted himself into the creative team and doomed their chances.

That is not true. There was a time when you needed to sing in your country's official language. But it is not the beginning. In the beginning you could sing in any language. At the time no one had had the idea yet so there was no rule.
The winning song from 1961 had a secret interpretation. Most people thought it was describing a straight couple when it was actually written for a gay couple. The singer was gay himself but hid it. A nice snub to the morality of the time. Without the 1965 winning female singer, Frank Sinatra would never have been able to sing My Way. Because the original song from which the American crooner's cover is taken tells of the separation between this female singer and the male singer of the original version.
Imagine that: Australia suddenly participating in Eurovision and almost getting the 1st place on its second year of participation. Imagine the competition having to happen all the way in the other side of the World. I don't think many Europeans would be too happy with that scenario 🤣

1997 was when the year when electronic music first came in. Look up Paul Oscar who sang 'Minn Hinsti Dans' for Iceland. The man broke the mould and was the first one to bring a 'sexier' image to the contest with four beautiful, blonde, high ponytailed models who draped themselves over the sofa and writhed around in a multitude of positions. They were accompanied by a thumping bass heavy performance. Prior to his performance, Eurovision was a pretty 'stuffy', vanilla affair that was super family friendly. Paul Oscar blew the lid off the competition in terms of expectations. He ended up finishing further down the board however as the public were a bit outraged and turned off by it, but he was the one who set the standard for the subsequent performers who decided to sex up their performances. Love that song.

I love the Eurovision song contest, watch it every year, not long till 2024 kicks off a few months, talk about Euro, check out the Women's Euros 2022, a history in the making there, goes down in the history makes, there's a documentary on it also and to win every single match, it all just clicked into place , the 1st Euros men or women's team have won. Superb, I think it changed women's football, a record crowd I believe as well.
I was able to watch both Vicky Leandros and Anne-Marie David perfoming those songs from '72 and '73, live, at the final for the Luxembourg Eurovision 2024, where they selected their representant for this year. We also got to see Ruslana (2004), Alexander Rybak (2009), Katrina Leskanich (1997) and Charlotte Perrelli (1999). It was quite awesome, and it was so, so small, if compared with the ACTUAL Eurovision 😁

True. What a lot of people forget is that teenagers weren't treated as a serious demographic for anything until the 1970s and even then it was limited. Film, TV, music, books, etc. all media was focused on the older established generations until the 70s, on the new adult range (18 - 35) in the 80s and early 90s, and it is only very recently that young adults (say, 12 - 25) have become the primary target audience. You can see this in how big budget action & comedy films switched from R-rated to PG-13/ PG in the early 90s.
GENTLEMEN, LET US GET SOMETHING STRAIGHT.. IT IS A ****song**** CONTEST, NOT A VOCAL/SINGING CONTEST. Yes, the quality of the performer(s) and the quality/scale of the staging make a big difference, but it is about the song itself.. That's why the writers get a significant amount of the praise etc. Now, to sell your song you need brilliant vocals and these days, crazy staging. That last part helps mostly with the unwashed masses and the televoting. The Juries are supposedly focused on the song itself a bit more.
Because the rules focus on the SONG< this is why it is possible that foreign writers and performers can be involved, since it is simply the particular national broadcaster putting forth a song. Winning performers get the trophy, and whatever benefits to their careers, but the prestige of winning for the broadcaster rapidly morphs into the nightmare realization: WHAT THE F*** HAVE WE DONE??? Now e have ot do all the work ourselves!!! 😱😳🤯😭

That's not the case. Culture is not perfectly encapsulated, I would even say rarely encapsulated by Eurovision contestants from any one country. Culture is so much more and Eurovision is more about appealing to everyone else. We in Sweden, have way better music that is innovative in a Swedish way, than the constestants we send to Eurovision. Culture's got nothing to do with Eurovision.

Personally, I don't even think Sam Ryder was *that* good, and I'm from the UK. Top 10 perhaps, but wasn't good enough to deserve 2nd place. The only thing that stood out from the song itself was that repeated high note on "Space..mAAAN", which was too repetitive and not enough to really elevate that song to top tier status for me.

1985 was a great year for Norwegian pop music. Not only did we win Eurovision, we also got a Norwegian artist at the top of the charts in America and many other countries with the legendary "Take on me" by a-ha. The 80's were amazing!
I gotta disagree about the 2022 result without the war. I dont think the UK wouldve won instead of the Ukraine if the war didn't happen. I believe Spain would've won over the UK as they had a higher televote pointage over the UK. Im not mad at the result of 2022 though as Ukraine always brings excellent entries in Eurovision.
The reason why Luxemburg was so popular in the 1960s and 1970s is because of the way the contest is organized. See, it's technically not a competition between countries, but between national broadcasters (BBC for the UK, ARD for Germany, TVE for Spain, etc.). And so, RTL for Luxemburg. The thing is, because Luxemburg is so tiny a country, it broadcasts its programmes for neighboring countries and markets: a French-language radio station for France and Belgium, a Dutch one for Belgium and the Netherlands, a German one for Germany, etc. So the bosses at RTL would play their song over and over again until the national juries, through the mere exposure effect, came to like it 😂

I don't think the UK entry would have necessarily won without the war. Who wins is not always the song critics say was "the best", and I won't even say the UK had the best song in 2022. I really disliked your comment about the Kalush Orchestra win. Ingnorant people like to brush it off as pity win. These same people forget that this song brought of cultural song, folt notes mixed with modern music and sounds. Initially the lyrics for "Stefania" have been like an ode to a mother, with the narrator speaking of good memories of his own mother. The song talks about how much his mother has aged, invoking a nostalgic past. With the start of the war with russia the people started assosiating Ukraine as the mother in the song. For future refference, you may not like the song, the sound or the meaning but give it the respect it deserves. It feels plain disrepectful to people who this song means so much to call it a "pity win because of the war", especially given the contenct of the events going on right now.

Sandra Kim (from Belgium) was 13 when she won Eurovision in 1986 and Gigliola Cinquetti (from Italy) was 16 when she won Eurovision in 1964, so yes, some of the singers are quite young.
The woman in 1991( Carola) is Swedish Eurovision royalty as she along with one other woman are the only people who's competed for Sweden in Eurovision 3 times which is the most times and Carola have always been top 5 as she came 3rd in 83, 1st in 91 and 5th in 2006

This is a competition -- which means winning or losing is relative : the same song/artist/performance might win one year and lose the next. Each country puts forth a different, original song for this competition -- and sure, there are politics involved, but maybe not as much as you'd think. I mean you said about mäneskin that it's popular and known in the US. Which is probably why you've heard it before and why you enjoy it more -- because it sounds more familiar. On the other hand, many songs that have won the competition sound more like what other Europeans are used to hearing. It's sad though that artists such as yourselves prefer to put down other artists (I'm thinking of the comment on Ryback's performance...) rather than try to understand what other people might have liked about those European songs. Frankly, seeing the review of winners, not only did I hear some of my favourites again, but I also appreciated some songs I didn't quite like the year they were actually performed -- so there is room here for appreciation rather than a quick : excellent, good, not good, top 10.
47:00 Nah, Stefania was still one of the strongest performances that year. It would probably still win or at the very least would be close second. It was a culmination of all the ethnic + modern performances we had from Ukraine for past 10 years and this one was especially beautiful, due to the lyrics. Sam had good song and good set, I still think he would fall flat with the mainland votes, that would opt for the ethnic piece. Remember that people vote for 10 countries. UK didn't get as traction that year. If not Stephania - I would even dare to say that Spain would have taken it.
Sam was fifth in the Public vote and did not get a lot of highest scores - even if you cut Ukraine altogether and moved everyone in one spot - Spain would actually get few dozens points more than UK. Which is important because they were only 7 points apart.
European also like their rap. And it was a rap and spoken word year as well. With Moldova and Serbia also hitting it extremely hard from the public. So without the war Ukraine likely would still have won, because they had the best rap piece that night. They only needed 275 points from the Public, which isn't a shocking value (Moldova got 239). Their Jury was better than UKs public so they had a lot more space within their public score.
His only chance would be only that the Jury scores would change as well. But at that point people would just riot, because he got way too many Jury points already.
Funny enough with the Jury scores being so pushed into UK and Sweden - there could have been a chance where Hold Me Closer would end up higher than Space Man as well. They had similar Public vote and 30 points Jury difference. But Kornelia did better with Slavic and Scandinavian countries, which with her getting those 12s instead of Kalush, she could push in front of Sam.
Other important thing is that - this is post C19. The vibe on the continent was still very tense - war or not. In top of the public you had super playful ethnic and party songs or very down to Earth normal life songs. A song sung to a mother would still do better than a radio hit about being a sad space man.

Mind you another year where a record was broken - as he had the strongest public vote score aside Ukraine. He almost hit the 400 score and only reason he lost was because Jury gave Loreen almost as much points.

2023 the jury votes made sure Sweden got the eurovision for ABBAs 50th anniversary. Public voted Finland/Cha Cha Cha #1 with a landslide 376 points - Loreen was second with 243 points...
Sadly 95% of the time the best song doesnt win in eurovision due to neighboring countries jurys voting each other. It is getting better, but the jury still has too big part in votes.
And be grateful we have juries, they make sure there still is artistry left in ESC. Otherwise karaoke songs like Cha Cha Cha would dominate ESC every year. Like they used too..
Oh get over it already. Loreens victory was a combination of televotes and jury. You need both to win. Luckily the jury saved us from a gimmick winner. I would say neigbouring voting and most of all diaspora voting are big problems with televoting.

We represented Ukraine in my home town of Liverpool it was a fantastic week I'm so proud we made it one of the most memorable Eurovision's.

I personally loved Stefania and don't even remember UK one. It was definitely number 1 for me that year. I didn't vote, but I really enjoyed it.
Also spannish song was absolutely amazing. I don't understand how it scored so low. I noticed that all american reaction videos show completely different opinions to the most europeans. You have completely different taste in music than most europeans.
Luxembourg was so successful because they imported both writers and performers from other countries.
It was also used by others from time to time. Eg a certain french Canadian we know of won for Switzerland

Nice with Eurovision content, and so much to choose from. I know Schlager has 2nd and 3rd places(maybe also 4th and 5th) and each countrys entries, and yearly recaps(don't remember if it is only ranked by his own preferences or full videos of the actual results), but that could be really fun to see your reactions to, along with last place entries(remember before 2004 there were only one finale, so after 2004 last places can either be last place in the finale or overall last place from semi finals)or maybe the entries this year when all are revealed or a reaction to the recap and voting/results, if you rather wanna go into this years contest blind at first.

Great review, gents! Good to see you diving into the background, culture and spirit of the contest, too, not just rubbishing the music (especially from the earlier eras) simply because it's outside your familiar zone, as a lot of reviewers seem to when they react to these videos. Although of course you had to get some digs in about some of the bands and artists, especially from the 80s onwards, but that's part of the joy of watching Eurovision since then - seeing what craziness will appear!
Traditionally, the winner of the contest hosts it the following year, although occasionally that has not happened, most recently when Ukraine won it but the UK hosted (because of the ongoing war making it impossible to hold the event in Kyiv).
Regarding the UK, my personal favourite of all the entries from my country was Katrina & The Waves' storming pop song "Love Shine A Light" in 1997, which I doubt we will better in a long time, if ever. It earned the biggest winning margin of the contest up to that year and still ranks up there as one of the best winners of all time (adjusted for numbers of entries and voting changes). A mark of the iconic nature of that song is that in 2020 during the COVID pandemic (when the contest could not be held), "Love Shine A Light" was re-recorded as a medley with all the past winners singing a line each as part of a special recorded show. Other great winners from this country were "Puppet On A String" (our first winner), and of course "Making Your Mind Up".
BTW, Ibiza is pronounced "eye-bee-tha" or "ee-bee-tha" (the latter is more accurate to the Spanish, but the former is accepted in English-speaking countries).
I respectfully disagree. I think Stefania was a better, more interesting and innovative song than Spaceman. Sure, Ukraine may have gotten a few sympathy votes, I won’t dispute that, but I think they were very worthy winners. And if you check how many views the songs have here on youtube, the official video and the live performance have a combined 96 million views for Stefania compared to 18 million views for Sam Ryder. That says something, doesn’t it? Sam Ryder did well, but Kalush Orchestra had the better song.
But would it have won without the war and what the song represented?

And it is song contest, and Stefania as the song is better then Spaceman, I think people like Sam song bc of how he sings it, his performance, etc, but then Stefania has rap, it isn't offten that we see one, so it was interesting for sure, plus instruments, etc, it was great made song, and Spaceman was normal pop song on the end, Sam simply had great vocal performance, but no always....
And I don't know if you watched grand finale live but Sam had very bad performance that day, he wasen't at his best. And I only watched finale that year so it was my first time that I heard that song and it was weak for me, I was really shocked it was so high, but friend told me that Sam is quiet popular in internet, etc. So yeah, even if some sympatic votes that Ukraine got would go somewere else, I don't think it would be UK, a also think that Stefania would still bevin top 5.

I’m also conflicted about this and it would’ve been interesting to see how the scores would have turned out without the war because Ukraine undoubtedly had a very good and unique song. I was okay with that win, not being a huge fan of either Spain or the UK, although it didn’t take many listens for me to grow tired of it. Personally I would’ve wanted to see MARO from Portugal win that year, it’s the only song from 2022 that I still listen to regularly.
My all-time favourite will always be 1996's The Voice by Eimear Quinn.
I was surprised how often Germany was in second or third place. Also Ukraine did really well even before their win, if you look at the runner-ups in every year.
The competition got too big for me. Too many countries, taking too much time to vote. 😅
But if you only look at the contestants: the winners are often the boring ones. Criticize them any way you like. 😂❤
We watch it for the spectacle of the others. (And to win! I don’t believe, even for a second, that any country would choose a contestant in order to lose)

Ukraine competed once before their first win and it was a low score. Apparently Kirkorov had inserted himself into the creative team and doomed their chances.

That is not true. There was a time when you needed to sing in your country's official language. But it is not the beginning. In the beginning you could sing in any language. At the time no one had had the idea yet so there was no rule.

The winning song from 1961 had a secret interpretation. Most people thought it was describing a straight couple when it was actually written for a gay couple. The singer was gay himself but hid it. A nice snub to the morality of the time.
Without the 1965 winning female singer, Frank Sinatra would never have been able to sing My Way. Because the original song from which the American crooner's cover is taken tells of the separation between this female singer and the male singer of the original version.

I'm Ukrainian, but I'm absolutely unbiased and confident that Stefania deserves first place. Moreover, if Russia had the opportunity to perform and showed itself with dignity, if their performance was better than Kalush, I would accept it.

1997 was when the year when electronic music first came in. Look up Paul Oscar who sang 'Minn Hinsti Dans' for Iceland. The man broke the mould and was the first one to bring a 'sexier' image to the contest with four beautiful, blonde, high ponytailed models who draped themselves over the sofa and writhed around in a multitude of positions. They were accompanied by a thumping bass heavy performance. Prior to his performance, Eurovision was a pretty 'stuffy', vanilla affair that was super family friendly. Paul Oscar blew the lid off the competition in terms of expectations. He ended up finishing further down the board however as the public were a bit outraged and turned off by it, but he was the one who set the standard for the subsequent performers who decided to sex up their performances.

Nicole who won for Germany in 1982 released her winning song in more than one Europen language. She was quite young, too, if I recall correctly.
according to wikipedia she was born in october 1964, so she was 17 during the 1982 contest.

I love the Eurovision song contest, watch it every year, not long till 2024 kicks off a few months, talk about Euro, check out the Women's Euros 2022, a history in the making there, goes down in the history makes, there's a documentary on it also and to win every single match, it all just clicked into place , the 1st Euros men or women's team have won. Superb, I think it changed women's football, a record crowd I believe as well.

I was able to watch both Vicky Leandros and Anne-Marie David perfoming those songs from '72 and '73, live, at the final for the Luxembourg Eurovision 2024, where they selected their representant for this year. We also got to see Ruslana (2004), Alexander Rybak (2009), Katrina Leskanich (1997) and Charlotte Perrelli (1999). It was quite awesome, and it was so, so small, if compared with the ACTUAL Eurovision 😁

If you have the opportunity, watch Jamala's performance of 1944 in it's whole. The lyrics are heartbreaking, there's so much emotion and her voice is spectacular! I cry every time I hear it.
