Great list and good take on album covers. Your editing style and general video layout really matches your sentiment towards the album covers. I dont know anyone who uses an aspect ratio thats not 16:9 and makes it look good. And the color grading looks really unique (and not in a bad way, its very pleasing). Fantastic video, and subscribed.
Ive found an entire band through 1 album cover. I thought 'ooh that looks cool' and listened to the album which ended up being brilliant. The effort that artists like storm thorgerson put in with covers such as a momentary lapse of reason is so cool
I think TV Girl album covers haves beautiful motif to their album covers, I also enjoy Smashing Pumpkins album covers and my all time favorite album cover is Pacific Daydream by Weezer. Also, my favorite concept for a single cover is Awkward by FIDLAR. They use a collage of yearbook photos and I think it perfectly encapsulates the song being called “Awkward”
Here are my personal fav covers: #1 X-Multiples by Yellow magic Orchestra #2 in the wake of doshin the giant by Tatsuhiko asano #3 Fun by Daniel Johnston #4 For you, and pocket music by Tatsuro Yamashita #5 Contact by silver apples And #6 Contra by vampire weekend. This is the stuff I like as of today, of course I will probably see more amazing covers in the future ;)
Trench is an amazing album. its cover is one of my favorite parts of it. not only does it show a vulture with yellow eyes (and yellow is a big color in the album itself). it means something. it also looks how the album FEELS. it’s vintage and spray paint feel fits so well!!
Soft Cell's "Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret" has a perfect cover that fits the music beautifully. The duo are wearing these super futuristic outfits, washed in these bright... swashes of red and blue, with the entire color theme revolving around blue and red. "Soft Cell" and the album's name are both plastered on as these beautiful, bright neon bulbs, again in red and blue. The music... fits it so perfectly, being cold, droning, and very experimental... don't forget about Tainted Love, because it fits the album cover the best.
Great video, however your style and visual veneer here (which i usually love) clashes with the discussion of the artwork and makes it difficult to see what album covers your talking about.
Emergency On Planet Earth by Jamiroquai has really great artwork IMO. The cover itself is just solid white with their buffalo man logo in the center with the name of the artist and album at the top, but what makes it special is the inside of the cd case and gatefold LP it was initially released on. When you open it up theres artwork of the members of the band in a jungle surrounded in animals and plants that helps to sell the messages of environmental conservation and social commentary.
Non-artistic album covers can be found in the 1960s early Beatles and Rolling Stones era of covers being a photo of the band members standing. The pre-concept album era where vinyl pressings were nothing more than a collection of an artist's work- that being of the band members. I still find cover art of "person(s) standing" intriguing because it's a metaphorical greetings from the band member(s), a kind of honesty about the music being by them. The Weezer's s/t [blue album] cover art is not "post-ironic", it's simply reflection of what the band felt represented the music, the band members themselves. Weezer later even has a "Pinkerton" artistic album cover that is a interpretation of the opera Madama Butterfly.
I like your editing style, aesthetics, and personality a lot! In my opinion though, I think you should have talked more about the thematic components of a cover and what they "say" to the listening audience. This is just my take on the conversation, no hate at all.
Wish you were here has such an iconic album cover and just my favorite image ever, i literally have it tattooed on my body. Some of my fav covers more recently: Desire, I want to turn into you; Census Designated; Stepdream; Skinty Fia. And the one creative take on the “artist just standing there” cover imo is Arca’s KiCk i
ok this is a cool vid but man the ultra super duper saturation is quite headache inducing at times and is distracting. its also a bit weird and ironic talking bout design and showing examples but then slabbing a vhs / tape / idk filter over it so you basically cant even see the things anymore. you can clearly edit and present well, so its a tad strange i feel like seeing this. tho i feel like you will probs go out and make some awesome stuff
Glad BTTIGTP got a mention here. A few others I really like: Death Grips - Money Store: I love the illustration on this. It's vulgar, edgy, confusing yet somehow understandable and a lot more simple compared to their other albums - same can be said about the music. Enter Shikari - A flash flood of colour. Similar to the contents of the album, its a flood of bright lights and sound on a dying planet. MBV - Loveless. The quintessential 'it looks like how the music sounds.' Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition. Just look at it
Haven't seen a vid of yours since the EATEOT video, and might I say, this video looks SLICK! I almost didn't even recognize you given how much your visual style has changed. Incredible video and incredible work man.
Awesome video. Most underrated album cover, and my favorite, created by Storm Thorgerson is The Cranberries' "Bury the Hatchet." Also Rush's "Moving Pictures" with the triple meaning on the front and back. Something I'm interested in is the impact on the inside album cover art and the back cover art on an album. Since we stream mostly now we only see the front cover. Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew" wouldn't mean as much without the back cover. Yes' "Close to the Edge" doesn't mean much without the inner artwork. I wish streaming services gave the option of clicking the cover to see the inner sleeve and back cover for these older physical albums to give the art designers the credit they deserve
What makes it worse on the list in my opinion, besides everything you mentioned, it is that it only considered "western" artists. I'm going to speak only in behalf of Brazil, which is huge influential in music, wasn't in the list. The cover of the album Clube da esquina, for example os absolutely iconic and captures 100% of the atmosphere of the record. Which is quite a feat since the album is so complex and diverse...
my favorite album cover is the (++) by loona. It represents perfectly the album sound, which also represents a lore behind the music and the group concept
For me, one of my favourite album covers would be In Sides by Orbital. It’s such a abstractly wacky yet breathtaking piece of art, yet capturing the sound of the album perfectly
Nice work! But I didn't quite understand why, when discussing the covers, you put a strange effect on the video. This makes it difficult to view the covers. Isn't that the point of the video? And there's your face in a circle in the corner. Do we really need to see it throughout the video? I think it would be more comfortable to listen to the voice in the background and view the covers in good quality without distorting filters. Thanks for the video and good luck!
and it's not even the front cover only, there are albums that i love but never seen the full cover, back and inserts, we're getting detached from the visual arts experience that we had all the way from the 70s to the 90s bands full of visual art like sonic youth, black flag, talking heads... now it's just a small square in a mobile app that most of the time won't even be fullscreen and will never let you zoom in to see details or (is it dreaming too high?) see the back cover and inserts of vinyls and maybe even have extra content to see in the app like zine PDFs and bonus wallpapers or some shit, and at the same time this happens we get detached from the very concept of "album", a lot of stuff is released as a lot of unrelated singles and the main "music media organization" being consumed is playlists
Are they really? Maybe at the very top, but nowadays there are so many beautiful, intriguing, eyecatching album covers just below the surface that a year's or two's allowance easily equates the list of the most iconic ones from the 60s or 70s
As much as I hate to admit it, certified lover boy's cover is well designed by basic principles, unique, and captures the feel of the album. Does that mean it's perfect? I think that comes down to taste. Hated as it is, it's one of the most memorable and talked about mainstream covers in recent memory.
The cover always finds the album, problem is artists rush to put it out and settle with something half-baked that doesn't work like the equvilent of jamming a jigsaw piece knowing it's not the one
If you want to see great album art, look at metal albums. Nearly every album has beautiful artwork that encapsulates its theme or emotion. Granted some bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden's recent covers have been rather boring and bad compared to past ones, but my point still stands.
To the point of the quality and popularity of an album affecting how iconic is seen by everyone, i like to put weezer as an example (yea weird choice but hear me out) The blue album as iconic as it is, it has a bit of a bland composition, by itself its feels like an offbrand apple ipod billboard. The green album, while still being a bit bland, it has a more interesting composition than the blue album and has a bit more flare to it, at a critical level you can say green album is better but, in the field of iconicity, blue album sweeps just because its more popular overall, just would like to bring that out
Loved the video and editing style, but i would chill down on the filter when showing the albums, if thats what the video is about I'd like to see the album the way it is
1 of the best albums this year or so I've been told is blue lips. However, I haven't gotten into it as I can't get past the album cover as its just not to my taste
i thought the cover art was meant to be KKK hoods and imagined it as something with a meaning cause the albums about society n shit but now I realized it isn't and now it feels meaningless to me
@@Dotdotdot51516 lol fair enough but I just love the way it captures not just the sound of the music but the world that kid a creates, it’s cold, dark, mysterious and weird but strangely beautiful, I absolutely love it
Honestly my personal picks for a good range of great album covers to terrible album covers is Twenty One Pilots (I have a strange obsession with them lol) Like, Trench is a great cover. Fits the vibe of the album without being too edgy or too safe. Thematically it's perfect and it just works, capturing the sound phenomenally. Then we get to their most recent album Clancy that comes out in May, it fits the vibe sure, but it's so poorly constructed. It's a messy firey red/yellow background with the album name in a little logo, then small pictures of Tyler and Josh at the bottom, in black and white, with very poorly done cropping, terrible composition, grainy picture quality on the band members alone and it's all topped off by having the pictures of them incorrectly cut out, it looks so ameture. Compared to every previous album cover they've made it just looks lazy and it could easily pass for a first draft, I genuinely believe it is as such. The white variant is far better but is still compositionally strange. It's just a white background and the logo is in red, plus the red tape on Tyler's shoulders is coloured but the rest of the portraits are still black and white. It works better and even hides the poor cropping and rotoscoping Hell, even Scaled and Icy, the record between Trench and Clancy that is just a pop record in-between two story driven darker records, has a great cover. And that great cover is just a pink background with their album exclusive logo redesign and a prominent blue dragon in the forefront. All that topped off with almost a grainy paper like texture. It captures the sound but is still far better than the music personally speaking
i personally like the clancy cover but i do agree it feels a little sloppy. like it was made in like 10 minutes. i’m hoping it’ll be renewed or at least have the twenty pilots logo like trench has. it’s very similar to trench in story and sound already so it would make sense to make their album covers have the same feel. there’s not much on the clancy one to make it super impressive. i have hope there will be a less sloppy version later when the album is released (really hoping) edit: i also do agree that sai has an amazing cover. sorry i go into ever album for some reason so here’s me talking: vessel is nice because of their grandpas but it’s not anything super impressive (but it does still work very well). self titled has to be either their best or second best under trench. it’s amazing. it’s perfect. blurryface is ICONIC. and regional at best is so sweet and honestly fits so well. it also shows the old tøp red and blue logo which i think is really cool :)

Your editing style and general video layout really matches your sentiment towards the album covers. I dont know anyone who uses an aspect ratio thats not 16:9 and makes it look good. And the color grading looks really unique (and not in a bad way, its very pleasing).
Fantastic video, and subscribed.
Best album art: Alison Schulniks painting for Deafheavens New Bermuda.
Insane cover.
Insane cover
Insane album
the cover art for tim hecker’s “dropped pianos” is an absolute masterpiece
NO BC ALBUM COVERS LITERALLY DO MAKE THE SONGS SOUND BETTER I SWEAR
my favorite album cover is definitely the one from death grips - year of the snitch
“album covers literally make the music sound better”
no love deep web:
Ive found an entire band through 1 album cover. I thought 'ooh that looks cool' and listened to the album which ended up being brilliant. The effort that artists like storm thorgerson put in with covers such as a momentary lapse of reason is so cool
Storm thorgerson also looked at the lyrics of the album and used key bits to create a picture that described the music
what band was it
I think TV Girl album covers haves beautiful motif to their album covers, I also enjoy Smashing Pumpkins album covers and my all time favorite album cover is Pacific Daydream by Weezer.
Also, my favorite concept for a single cover is Awkward by FIDLAR. They use a collage of yearbook photos and I think it perfectly encapsulates the song being called “Awkward”
I love all those bands
CITIES AVIV MENTIONED🗣️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I'm the number 100 like... i feel so honored hahahaha
Also how didn't anyone remembered the Dark Side Of The Moon album cover, so simple yet effective
perdão mas que homem chato
My man you are a legend for including the Ground-Zero album cover at 8:49 (the 3rd album cover from where he starts naming them off)
I love In The Aeroplane Over The Sea album cover. It fits so well with the music
This vid gonna blow up
Here are my personal fav covers:
#1 X-Multiples by Yellow magic Orchestra
#2 in the wake of doshin the giant by Tatsuhiko asano
#3 Fun by Daniel Johnston
#4 For you, and pocket music by Tatsuro Yamashita
#5 Contact by silver apples
And #6 Contra by vampire weekend.
Something about the first Gorillaz album cover goes so insanely hard, it’s difficult to describe
I know it’s not anything amazing but my fav album cover is Korns self titled album it’s just so cool and the album is great too :))
No velvet underground & nico?
Me when I can’t get someone to make me album cover art for my albums:
“Fine, I’ll do it myself” *Picks up a pencil*
I like your editing style, aesthetics, and personality a lot! In my opinion though, I think you should have talked more about the thematic components of a cover and what they "say" to the listening audience. This is just my take on the conversation, no hate at all.
My perfect album covers:
i,i - Bon iver
Deleted Scenes Forgotten Dreams - The Caretaker
DrukQs - Aphex twin
Wish you were here has such an iconic album cover and just my favorite image ever, i literally have it tattooed on my body. Some of my fav covers more recently: Desire, I want to turn into you; Census Designated; Stepdream; Skinty Fia. And the one creative take on the “artist just standing there” cover imo is Arca’s KiCk i
If anything, albums covers have gotten better. Have you seen the album covers in the 60s and earlier, they had so much writing on them
ok this is a cool vid but man the ultra super duper saturation is quite headache inducing at times and is distracting. its also a bit weird and ironic talking bout design and showing examples but then slabbing a vhs / tape / idk filter over it so you basically cant even see the things anymore.
you can clearly edit and present well, so its a tad strange i feel like seeing this. tho i feel like you will probs go out and make some awesome stuff
Glad BTTIGTP got a mention here. A few others I really like:
Death Grips - Money Store: I love the illustration on this.
The quintessential 'it looks like how the music sounds.'
Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition.
Props for including Ground Zero on there
I don't really get the cover but that is an awesome album
my favorite album cover is the (++) by loona. It represents perfectly the album sound, which also represents a lore behind the music and the group concept
For me, one of my favourite album covers would be In Sides by Orbital. It’s such a abstractly wacky yet breathtaking piece of art, yet capturing the sound of the album perfectly
straight up fantano-ass take calling savoirs a bad album. i'm not gonna call it the greatest album of all time but i think it's pretty decent man.
I'm ngl I was confused with this observation. Good album covers are everywhere. Why would you listen to an artist that doesn't value...art?
I don't think an album cover has to necessarily match the music to be good
Completely agree with everything you just said but saviors does NOT sound like hot poo poo
As much as I hate to admit it, certified lover boy's cover is well designed by basic principles, unique, and captures the feel of the album. Does that mean it's perfect? I think that comes down to taste. Hated as it is, it's one of the most memorable and talked about mainstream covers in recent memory.
That guy talking about the headhunters album was the cute one 😅
The cover always finds the album, problem is artists rush to put it out and settle with something half-baked that doesn't work like the equvilent of jamming a jigsaw piece knowing it's not the one
If you want to see great album art, look at metal albums. Nearly every album has beautiful artwork that encapsulates its theme or emotion. Granted some bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden's recent covers have been rather boring and bad compared to past ones, but my point still stands.
The certified lover boy fits the 3rd criteria perfectly, the music matches the album cover! Both hot piles of garbage!
To the point of the quality and popularity of an album affecting how iconic is seen by everyone, i like to put weezer as an example (yea weird choice but hear me out) The blue album as iconic as it is, it has a bit of a bland composition, by itself its feels like an offbrand apple ipod billboard. The green album, while still being a bit bland, it has a more interesting composition than the blue album and has a bit more flare to it, at a critical level you can say green album is better but, in the field of iconicity, blue album sweeps just because its more popular overall, just would like to bring that out
Dark Side of the Moon is the best album cover in history. Change my mind.
Imo a lot of metal artists tend to have crazy amazing covers. Dance club massacres covers are insane and i love them
Hey really cool video but I don't think you should put effects on the album covers I can't even see it lol but awesome video indeed
This may be overlooking it, but i like how the screen is in a square format, like an album cover!
Loved the video and editing style, but i would chill down on the filter when showing the albums, if thats what the video is about I'd like to see the album the way it is
The objectively best album cover to this day is "0" by Ichiko Aoba.
1 of the best albums this year or so I've been told is blue lips. However, I haven't gotten into it as I can't get past the album cover as its just not to my taste
the visuals of this video are just so pleasing to me, its fitting, given the subject matter
One of my favorite albums covers is your dead by flying lotus
I really like Velocity:Design:Comfort, how do you guys feel about that cover
Where’s the appreciation for kid a😭
i thought the cover art was meant to be KKK hoods and imagined it as something with a meaning cause the albums about society n shit but now I realized it isn't and now it feels meaningless to me
@@Dotdotdot51516 lol fair enough but I just love the way it captures not just the sound of the music but the world that kid a creates, it’s cold, dark, mysterious and weird but strangely beautiful, I absolutely love it
It certainly isn’t dying in the indie rap scene.
cool video but please calm it with the visual saturation
NEW JAKE
Bad moon rising by sonic youth has one of the best covers ever made imo
I love your videos so damn much, hoping for your channel to hit 100k
Honestly my personal picks for a good range of great album covers to terrible album covers is Twenty One Pilots (I have a strange obsession with them lol)
Like, Trench is a great cover.
It works better and even hides the poor cropping and rotoscoping
Hell, even Scaled and Icy, the record between Trench and Clancy that is just a pop record in-between two story driven darker records, has a great cover. And that great cover is just a pink background with their album exclusive logo redesign and a prominent blue dragon in the forefront. All that topped off with almost a grainy paper like texture. It captures the sound but is still far better than the music personally speaking
i personally like the clancy cover but i do agree it feels a little sloppy. like it was made in like 10 minutes. i’m hoping it’ll be renewed or at least have the twenty pilots logo like trench has. it’s very similar to trench in story and sound already so it would make sense to make their album covers have the same feel. there’s not much on the clancy one to make it super impressive.
i have hope there will be a less sloppy version later when the album is released (really hoping)
edit: i also do agree that sai has an amazing cover.
sorry i go into ever album for some reason so here’s me talking:
vessel is nice because of their grandpas but it’s not anything super impressive (but it does still work very well). self titled has to be either their best or second best under trench. it’s amazing. it’s perfect. blurryface is ICONIC. and regional at best is so sweet and honestly fits so well. it also shows the old tøp red and blue logo which i think is really cool :)
2:16 im not taking that green day slander
to this day i do not understand how you’re channel in so underrated
"Like Cory in the House" 😂
Why does this video feels like wes anderson made it lol
I think music is dying to some extent too.
