  • Today we visit Bergen, Norway and their classic Haukelandshallen!
    History:
Haukelandshallen is an indoor sports arena located in the Årstad borough of Bergen, Norway, not far from Brann Stadion and Nymarksbanene. It stands as the largest handball arena in the city and plays a vital role in Bergen’s sports scene. Designed by architect Bjørn Simonnæs, construction took place between 1965 and 1970, and the hall officially opened in 1970. The building is distinguished by its use of untreated concrete, which showcases sculptural and futuristic reliefs on its exterior, reflecting the expressive qualities of the material. This architectural style gives Haukelandshallen a modernist and almost industrial appearance. The arena is owned and operated by Bergen municipality.
The arena serves as the home court for the basketball team Ulriken Eagles, who play their regular games here. It has hosted numerous national handball matches for both men and women, further establishing its reputation as a significant venue for handball in Norway. One of the major events held at Haukelandshallen was the 2008 European Men's Handball Championship, during which several group stage matches were played in the hall. In addition to handball and basketball, the arena accommodates a wide range of other sports, including volleyball, martial arts, and archery. It is also used as a gymnasium for students from Gimle skole, illustrating its importance beyond professional sports, serving local schools and the community.
In 2005, the arena underwent significant renovations, which included the installation of a new parquet floor, improving the playing surface for various sports. In January 2008, Haukelandshallen became one of the first sports arenas in the region to install wireless internet. This upgrade was particularly useful during large-scale events like the 2008 European Handball Championship, where organizers and the press used the technology to support the competition. Over the years, the venue has also been used for other significant events, such as the 2009 national championship in floorball for the Boys 19 class and a national chess tournament. The hall's combination of modern architecture, historical significance, and versatile use makes it a key part of Bergen’s sporting infrastructure. It continues to host a range of activities, from international competitions to local school events, solidifying its status as a central arena in Norway's sports landscape.
