I totally get it when you say “feeling of belonging” and that you missed the people, the military mindset and the day to day stuff...
I miss the whole “Deployment Package” too. The simplicity of having a daily battle rhythm, the camaraderie gained through shared turmoil, the ease of catching a meal at the DFAC and definitely the paychecks too!!
After 8 years of “embracing the suck” as a private contractor, I got out 2 years ago.
When I was in theater, all I wanted was to come home and now that I’m home, all I want is to get back there.
    Civilian world sucks!

Good content. I joined at 17 because I had no idea what to do with my life. I needed a focus and I knew that the Army Reserves would give me the organizational skills and know how to accomplish almost anything. I also knew it looked amazing on your resume and could boost your chances of getting a job.

@@Von2Fye I don’t know anymore. I left in 2001, right when they changed the slogan from, “Be All That You Can Be” to “Army of One”. I hear it’s different now. Basic is different, how they treat the soldiers is different, and what you can do is different. I’m glad I got the experience and wish I had been the type to stay for all 20 years.

Got out as an E5 MEB 4.5 years AD I def miss being in. For all who want to serve, it’s what you make it!!!! We have a ton of opportunities and benefits. Some of which will last a lifetime, develop and maintain good relations with you supervisors/commanders and everyone to your left and right. I would personally go Active Duty, we have a ton of Jobs (MOS) choose wisely and don’t rush. I would suggest you do something that you can truly carry over in to the civilian world i.e. Medical, Cyber, Intelligence ect ect. I’m getting a very good percentage receiving a monthly check for the rest of my life, with many other benefits like the GI BILL. Keep your head low and be a team player, the years go by fast, with or without you so make your time worth it!!! I’ve seen a lot of good people mess up and leave with nothing.

That's with any branch and most people don't get their degree in 4 years. If you have to work full time to pay for school cuts in to classes and study time. Also, probably using student loans. So you can get your degree in 4 years, but spend the next 10+ years paying student loans. The National Guard covers the full cost of any state or public college. In Texas you can get up to $13,000 per year for college between state and federal ta. The reserves just get the $16,000 for that 4 years ($4,000 per year). Let's say you get deployed, you get tax free money. Meaning you may push school back a year, but your probably coming back with 20k-30k in the bank.

No regrets and down the line after my 3 year to hopefully transition to AGR or at least re-sign for long as possible. Excited and pumped! Longer and more thorough process the older you are with jobs, credit, residences, and history but smooth if you had no issues in general or flags. Let’s say I get 107 on my asvab on a certain area and I get let say 38B Civilian Affairs. I get into basic and AIT, but I fail AIT or something of that sort. I’ve heard that if you fail and can’t do your MOS you get put in where the army need to “fill the spots for their need”. Is that true? If it is, will That person be able to choose what other MOS they can do or will they choose for me? And... will my asvab score be able to help get a MOS that won’t be something that person wouldn’t like to have?

A big problem I'm facing with the military is the difference in recruiters. I'm not sure if the National Guard is really right for me yet but the only recruiter who has openly reached out to me is a national guard recruiter. He was very nice and I appreciated his willingness to engage with me, but he was pressuring me into going to MEPS 2 weeks from now and this is the first time I've met with him. I've reached out to an Air Force recruiter before and he didn't even want to talk to me. I don't want to let down my recruiter, but I just have that suspicion that maybe active duty would be better for me. Tough decision.

We’re you able to keep your rank as E5 when you switched? I want to start school full time and at that time it will be just over 6 years in active for me.

Not enough detail on life insurance.
What about if you're no longer in, and you die ?
What if you die outside of army after serving?

I’m leaving for basic on Nov 9th for Army reserves. I’m going into 91B and I have it in my contract that they will pay $30k for student loan repayments which is awesome because I only owe $20k

I'm joining army national guard, and for me, it's givin me a purpose. I'm headed to basic in two weeks, and i've never felt more alive, i have a future, a direction to go in, i'll have a nice chunk of cash when i get out & a really good reference on my resume, I dont know what i'll have to go through, i've only heard the trials and tribulations from others, but I feel the need to be strong through it, for the sake of everyone who got me this far, for the support from my friends, and for my family who believes in me. It's given me an opportunity & motivation i havn't found anywhere else.
