  • In an extended interview with Channel 4 News, as she launches The Climate Book, Greta Thunberg speaks about how she deals with online trolls and why she feels hopeful about the fight against climate change even as the world approaches a “precipice”.

    -------
    The Swedish teenager tells Channel 4 News that at just 19 she “already feels like a broken record” after railing against governments’ inaction for years, but she says she is inspired by the environmental community she’s become a part of.

      She is experienced enough by now to know that interviews can be very challenging and/or patronizing. The important thing is that her message will still be seen and heard. You won't get anywhere if you only do the easy things. She did a really good job at not playing along with the interviewer's narrative.

      @@1newme425 You could'nt be more wrong. Greta would'nt be in all British news channels right now if what she says did'nt count and was of public interest.
      The British have their rivers and coastal areas severely polluted by raw sewage since February and the new Tory legislation, it means there will be no fines for the company that destroyed that Cornwall paradise beach yesterday. No EU strict environmental laws needs to be followed by the UK anymore so the private (and foreign) sewage companies in England and Wales (the only two nations in the world with privately owned sewage systems) don't . To not get the expensive sewage cleaning chemicals from Portugal since you raised your trade barrier towards the EU is cheaper, just releasing the raw sewage in your rivers and on your coasts actually means more profit for their shareholders abroad.
      The fish caught in your polluted rivers and along your coasts can not be exported due to inferior quality, no one in the EU or elsewhere would eat fish from that toxic soup of yours'. It will most likely show up on British tables and in your fish and chips shops though for the Brits to revoir. We have an old saying "what you release in nature will at some point end up on your table" - you will experience that sooner than you think.
      Greta does'nt need more "fame and opportunities" as you so cynically call it, she is already world famous. She is 19, never made money from her international volunteering for climate, 100% of her upcoming book sales goes to charity. I can see how her selfless actions are incomprehensible to you, of course you're not able to understand it.

    3:01 - I don''t think "Saying the same thing over and over again until people listen" is the best approach to pursading someone to agree with your standpoint. If you know for a fact that your cause is honest and right, one should try to develop different approaches that are intended to challenge the way people think. Thinking is not stimulated by repetition that is not getting to people, but by exploring different ideas that do.

    • @Strange9952
      @Strange9952 11 месяцев назад

      actually it is, repetition is very effective, and is one of the most important components of propaganda, not saying her message is wrong but people are not motivated by reason alone

    • @jasperlazarus2556
      @jasperlazarus2556 11 месяцев назад

      That's probably true in most cases. If acvtivists are traveling and rallying for different groups of people with the same message, that is repetition for the activists but typically new information for people attending the events. Though objectively it would make sense that someone only needs to hear something once, ponder on it in their own time to decide what their opinion is. I guess I wish people were motivated by reason alone. If someone agrees with something only because they hear the standpoint repeated, depending on the ideas, that can be dangerous, benefical, or somewhere in between. Though I suppose that sort of habitual practice is never a good thing because if people are only agreeing with something because of a predictable tactic, they're somewhat unconsciously at it's mercy. Therefore people with terrible messages can use this tactic to spread them. If someone thinks more about something because it is repeated, that is fine regardless of the ideas.
      So this interaction between the pursuaders and the listeners has a few aspects. You have the ideas and viewpoints being presented and the degree of inclination in peoples minds to side with or against them. I would like to say the power is in the message alone, but you're right in that a lot of people will be influenced by repetition. Wether they hear it at an event or from a friend, see it on youtube or social media, that is repetitive from their perspective but not the sources of the message.

I was explaing what I thought of the use of repetition as a means of pursading people to agree with a particular standpoint, which in a certain sense has no direct relation to climate activism. I said that if a cause is provably justified, then it should be fought for, but in the best possible ways. I don't know exactly what ways they would be in this case, but I'm certain that repetition should not be a foundation for pursuasion, even if it works for some people. I explained why in my second comment.

    Thunberg: "The fossil fuel lobby had more representatives (at COP) than any nation" - Jackie Long: (my paraphrasing) "So .... Rishi and Boris - what about that drama eh ... you and the King, like peas in a Pod! He was Barmy about the environment too!" Jezus wept. This journalist was just not listening to Thunberg, while asking her if it was frustrating to not be listened to!
    On to cost of living - green energy is cheaper, but only if it's allowed to scale, something the fossil fuel industry holds back. This was an infuriating interviewer, surely there was someone more capable of holding a conversation who could have done this? 30 minutes is a lot of time to completely fail to have an actual discussion. Who wrote that 'gotcha' sheet she was reading from? Cause there was no deviation from the script - Thunberg handled this car crash of an interview well, including questions like "Should we be holding up ambulances" for fudges sake!
    How can a 19 year old be more mature, capable and articulate (in her non native language no less) at understanding this issue than a journalist of over 2 decades? Jackie had been at the BBC longer than Greta has been alive, and here she is trivializing the issue of our literal survival into a gossip rag about people and personalities, the who's who of climate conference attendance like it was the oscars, or even important, despite being handed real opportunities to dig into WHY the fossil fuel lobby is at climate talks.
    The media really is the problem. This is a textbook example of the them failing their job, and doing the Oil and Gas industries work for them: Distract and Delay.
    "Hope is something we need to do". Indeed.

    I don't understand why we cant face reality. There is no viable energy source to replace fossil fuels any time soon. Now that doesn't mean we should dial down building a renewable infrastructure. But It means we need to priorities preparation for the impending changes that climate change will give us.
    I read that even if every country dramatically reduced co2 right now, it is still predicted that the oceans will rise by 8 feet by the end of this century or as little as 50 years. Yet we are STILL increasing annual global emissions.
    Long story short folks...ALL we can do now is mitigate and prepare.
