This is little bit funny, in Germany outlets with levers are standard and outlets with screws are just very very cheap ones.
I was about to comment "laughs in European" myself 😆
Same here, this is standard in the Netherlands for more than a decade.
It just emphasize how backwards America is in a lot of things.
0:20 "Eliciting odd alliterations to ascertain understanding of which wires wind which way around which screws." is a beautiful title sentence to a manual I will not read anyway.
Glad you guys are using a better outlet. In France there's no screws at all. Solid wire just goes into the hole and it's solid. It has 2 holes so you can wire in series.
I actually work at Home Depot in the Electrical Dept. And this is awesome!!! First time I'm hearing about these, but will def. Let my customers and contractors know. Being a floor associate, we do not get info regarding new products like this. I already push the Wago lever nuts any time I can. Great video and thank you.....👍👍
Wow, very cool! Thank you for letting us know about this great design. And I agree that more manufacturers should make this type of outlet and switches.
These are awesome! I hope home depot pushes these hard because i could easilly see these being a gateway project to diy electric work.
Great video Nils, thank you for the information.
This is a great little product at first glance! Thank you for sharing this! I'm going to get some to give them a try!
I love the alignment feature for the switches! Now we just need them in colors other than white.
Thanks for the video!
Perfect. I'm just about to replace all of the outlets and switches in my home, and I will now be using these.
Thank you Brother for the shoutout! Great video! Professionally made and you showed clearly all the awesome features these new outlets has to offer! Keep making these helpful videos! 👍🏽😊🙏🏽
Great video. Thanks.
Wagos have been proven to have resistance, and resistance causes heat! I found two wago connectors in an addition that was built into our home 2 years ago by the previous owners. One was melted and no longer working, and the other had signs of overheating. I, for one, will not be using wago's ever!
What was wired on that circuit?
I use wago connectors for lights but prefer side wiring for my outlets.
I think the wago connectors are better for dealing with light fixtures that use stranded wires.
Wow, I literally just installed these yesterday in my house!
I was planning on replacing a bunch of switches and outlets in my house to upgrade to tamper resistant. Now I'm going to wait until I can get my hands on these. These will be way nicer to work with.
❤great idea!
I am not a professional, electrician, but I do dabble with electricity or outlets from time to time. Is good to see there’s improvement. Hopefully I can use them in my new home. They looked very interesting. Thanks for the heads up and the education.
The bulk price is honestly not bad. I'm sure I'll get some of these for some outlets I'm installing or replacing.
I love it i will upgrade all my sockets
The Wago lever connectors are revolutionary and my favorite, I was waiting to see when they would be incorporated into switches and plugs, it’s about time. Thanks for all the great videos. 🇺🇸🎸👮🏻♂️
They Are garbage and over heat
Wagos are for Wimps. Way more surface area, Current capacity and mechanical strength twisting and wire nutting.
If Wagos heat up they fail. Twisting and wire nutting will survive a house fire.
I'm from the UK, I cant believe how far behind US electrical installations are, granted it is 120v as opposed to 230 but it's unbelievable how sockets (outlets) and switches have massive screws poking out the side, easily touching the potential metal box!!! It's so ironic with such a technologically advanced country having what looks like 3rd world electrics. Also, WAGOs are far superior to wire nuts. Wire nuts aren't allowed in the UK
Agreed, agreed and agreed. For us, this is a massive step forward.

@@mrgcav Care to enlighten us? I'm always looking to learn.
Excellent video Brother.
I like the screwless Decora plates
These things are amazing. Super easy to install. I'm not a licensed Electrician. But these things cut my install time in half (20+ outlets). These are easily removed, easy to lock-in and since there is no exposed metal, easy to work with. For example, I had to take 4 just-installed outlets back out to readjust faceplate (long story). Since there is absolutely no metal, there was no issue grabbing the outlet and no need to cut the breaker (I know, I know - always cut the breaker anyways).
IMO, I'm all for technology advancing and making things easier. No reason a 100 year old design couldn't/shouldn't be improved.
We've had some of those plugs (not that brand) for a while in Europe, just need more time to become mainstream.
These are great.
I’m buying some tomorrow
Just updated outlets and switches (for color) and it took over 4 hours! (Had to fix mistakes made by contractor) wire nuts are not fun and three-way switches are not all the same... and not everybody uses the correct wire colors for them. This new invention would have saved me a lot of time!
You are admitting publicly that you committed a several code violations and crimes. Call a Licensed electrician before you have a House fire. Contractors are not licensed electricians.
What code violations????) He simply changed outlets and corrected mistakes ??????)
It seems really simple . I like it .Especially the colored tabs . How could you possibly go wrong . Unless you're color blind like Dr. Pole. Not being mean. I really love Doc.😊
Totally agree!
Interesting and pretty cool. What about 3 wire or two circuit connections, where there is a red wire as the second hot?
What about split wiring outlets ??????????
I would like to se an amperage test plus infrared temp reading.
DIY'er here. I just tried it, it's awesome. I don't like the price point. For me, when you're talking 25 plugs, it not really worth it but its getting close to worth $50 extra. I see these taking over unless they start catching fire.
I'm sure it'll be at least 20 years before we see anything exactly like this from any other company. That's how long patents usually last. Doesn't mean they can't come up with their own design, though. Looks like Leviton got right first time so it's going to be hard for someone else to do the same thing in their own style. Maybe the US patent office said, "You know what? This is for the safety of everyone who messes with electricity so, we're going to deny you, Leviton, your patent so that millions of these will be installed in new construction, everywhere!" Yeah...right! Or, maybe the NESC committee will see this and make it code? That would require other companies to be able to produce similar products. We can only wait and see.
People were skeptical when introduced those 10 years ago in Europe but since they are cheaper to produce nowadays dominated the Europe’s market. As an old person I still have sentiments towards screws but new designs works just better
In France we have these kinds of secure wago-like color-indicated outlets for at least twenty years.
But you don't have a system of measurements that has abominations like "nine 16th of an inch" now do you! 🙈
@@unvergebeneid no we dont you're right we do miss out on all that fun 😉
It’s actually professionals, i.e. licensed, electricians, who seem to be the ones most resistant to these types of advancements in the US. I’m not sure why, but it seems to extend to most of the trades.
@@sergegostoli9524Made up for by having to know the gender of all the objects around you.
These look great, definitely worth the slightly higher cost.
The only thing i would run into with my house i just sold was clearance issues in the rear of the outlet. It was an older house, so not sure if codes/tolerances were different when it was built, but these may not have worked as the protrusion of the wire might have been an issue.
That's an interesting point. Traditional outlets are about the same thickness and are designed to have the wires come straight out the back as well but there's more flexibility with those in what direction they go. Smaller junction boxes are definitely a consideration here.
@@LRN2DIY I see a very near future where Leviton offers a larger box, even larger METAL boxes that these will fit into without alteration. Other companies might be able to offer boxes designed for these, but they'll have to beat Leviton to the patent office...if Leviton hasn't already.
Nice product. Re mis-wiring. Looking at any (US) receptacle, with ground prong down, hot always goes on the right-hand side (narrower vertical slit in face). Larger slit is for common or white wire. Cost and speed of wiring will always be the driving force in the industry. The manufactures pay attention to the trades, which far outweigh the DIY'er voice. Just the way it is. Thanks for the video. Retired electrician.
Well this is certainly faster even if the cost is slightly higher.
You are correct.
How does it fasten to the box?
Can you use this for an outside outlet (providing that the enclosure is correct)?
You'll want to double check your local code on this but outdoor outlets typically have to either be GFCI or at least downstream of a GFCI outlet, as well as protected in a sealed box.
The "mouse ears" are actually spacers to be used if you need to help the outlet stand out farther from the box and then sit flush with the drywall. =)
I'm in love with this. Receptacles with built in Wago style lever connectors. Genius! Will use these often depending on price.
PLEASE do a disassembly video on one of these comparing it to various grades of outlet like residential and commercial.
I'm surprised they are only $3.50! I was expecting more like $5-10 each. Disappointed they are only 15A and only residential grade though. Still want to see a breakdown!
These are very similar to most residential grade on the inside, not quite commercial grade. This is the very first rollout though, so I'm hoping to see more industrial versions in the future.
@@LRN2DIY If they make 20A and commercial grade versions, it's all I will buy! Hahaha.

Your asking for a house fire.
Nice
Just ordered a ten pack
LRN2DIY, what is the electrical code for the PULL TEST criteria specs that will pass the electrical codes?
As a European US electrical equipment always cracks me up, I fail to understand how it can still be so "antiquated !!!" ?
It's like we're in different worlds sometimes. I have worked with some European receptacles and switches and it's an entirely different setup. We work with what we have, I suppose!
@@LRN2DIY
I suspect you are victims of Edison who managed to make the standard110V (DC at the time with all the issues that created) hence requiring more amps for a given power output which meant that push style connecters which are better suited to high voltage low intensity (at least when they were first developed) were seen as "unsafe".
That and since you require thicker wires you need "beefier" components just to handle the wires themselves
That and bureaucratic inertia
These are a cool design and all, but idk if the additional cost is justified and I can't help but ask, how much did Leviton pay you to plug their product?
That’s real progress!
This is a house fire waiting to happen
This is certainly an improvement and should make things better for the DIY community as well as the pros.
The sad thing about innovations like this is that companies use them to raise prices - I seriously doubt that they cost any more to make than a traditional outlet/switch since there is much less metal in them (no screws) nor is any threading of components needed so - they should not cost any more than a traditional outlet/switch. Likewise, the safety aspect is considerable, but companies also use patten laws to prevent their competition from incorporating such safety features to keep their profit margins high instead of sharing to promote such safety features.
It may be a long time before the other brands can incorporate such features in their products.
Shocks won't be a problem if you don't work hot! 😊
As someone from the UK these outlets seam way better than your normal outlets but if still say lit outlet design is safer
British plug is best plug.
The safety features and construction are great!
Issue is that they don't work with metal boxes. I had a fire a few years back that started at an outlet due to a wall wart charger overheated an caught fire. The metal box that the outlet was mounted in kept the fire from going up the wall and kept the damage limited to the cabinets above it. There was a plastic electrical box used for low voltage about 6' away and it completely melted compromising the integrity of the wall. Luckily the fire had not gotten there yet. I will only use metal electrical boxes.
I'm impressed the zip ties withstood that heavy weight
Then your easily impressed.
I've been replacing all of my outlets and switches with the Decora using the two-part plates that don't leave screws visible. I like the clean look.
These are definitely interesting.
I still like the extra security of outlets that are capable of the straight side wiring.
I do use Wago connectors but primarily when I'm wiring light fixtures that use stranded wiring. I don't like using Wago in higher current applications.
The extra safety and simplicity on these new outlets is great for new DIYers.
Well, in Australia DIY electronical work has been banned for as long as anyone can remember.
Schneider Electric has done something similar for Aussie/NZ/Chinese style GPO’s and switches. The Clipsal Iconic range has been a game changer. Similar features. Safer. Easier. Every new home and renno has sparkies choosng these outlets and switches. No push throughs on the switches. Easily replace facias and switches without having to do any interference with the switch block or GPO itself.
Less time for sparkies to install, so the benefit for them is huge. Fix off a whole home in less time.
Really neat!
I'm replacing all my light switches with Leveton and they a much easier to work with.
Thanks! Worth paying for the innovation for these. Never buying the other kind again.
Ok the real question will it take 12 guage wiring that you can’t find in the kitchen? I know I it says 15 amp. but someone may try to without knowledge.
I say maybe .
😮Got the answer yes it will take both #12 & #14 wire it’s stamped on the plastic.
interesting idea, but it doesn't fix the issue of the wires sticking straight out of the back which maybe isn't a problem with a box with minimal wires in it but if there are a bunch of wires those wires sticking straight out of the back may not survive.
I want these in GFCI. They don't make them yet
The only real negatives are the decor/square looking shape and the additional cost.
There are a few Wago vs Wire nut videos around. But none that I have seen do a proper comparison. Insertion tensile tests and max current tests are mostly irrelevant. Connectors fail due to cyclic thermo expansion of the wire due to current heating. Back stabbers are particularly poor under this load scenario; especially when using aluminium wire with it's higher thermal expansion coefficient. A proper long term thermo cycling test is needed to settle this.
Just built a new house, every outlet was stabbed, I have aready had to replace 6 outlets, some outlets had already quit working, due to the wires being broken in the back of the outlets where they stabbed them into the outlet.
Sorry to hear that, man. Yeah same with our house. Every one has been backstabbed so I just end up replacing them. Such a pain to deal with. Can you imagine having a new home and every outlet was one of these? Couldn't be easier.
This is a much needed design improvement. Last place I lived in had arcing in the outlets due to the horrible wiring job done by the building company where they removed way too much wiring insulation and installed in metal boxes. The entire place was an electrical fire hazard due to corners cut and sloppy work by the construction company.
If they are removing that much insulation, then it was done incorrectly. That is not due tonpoor outlet design.
This is a house fire waiting to happen.

Are they commercial grade?
Unfortunately, no. Well... not yet. These specific ones are residential grade but hopefully we'll see commercial grade soon!
Very cool, and we need more of these types of outlets and especially switches. Great video.
As an european I feel like having metal junction boxes is insane. We only use plastic here.
How many people die electrocuted in the US?
Fire Video LRN2DIY I will ask my dad to replace all the outlets in our house
Ask your Dad?!
Give that man a break and get to work!
I’m with this guy. Get those tools out and get crackin’, homie! 😉
I'm not sure how these are safer than the traditional?
It’s because no wiring or charged metal is exposed. With a traditional outlet there are 5-7 places that shouldn’t be touched unless you’re 100% positive the power is off (something that is mistaken all the time), but with these the entire thing is sealed so you can touch anything on it even while it’s hot. You should always disconnect the power but this is way safer.
I couldn't find any GFCI versions. Do you think those will exist in the near future?
I'd be surprised if they didn't come out with those very shortly. I suspect we'll see a whole variety of receptacles and switches in this style in the next year.
Lots to like, but really? Only in Decora style?
Yeah, I'd love to see other varieties too.
I like the device. I dont like the inference that these devices can be series up. 99.5 percent of the time there should be 1 black,1 white and 1 green on these devices.
Your hand looked a little shaky when you did the touch test there, big guy....
GFCI ?
The Blue and Red will never be cool with the other 🔫
I don't really care about light switches, all occupancy sensor switch/smart switch I installed so far come with a color coded piggy tail which works fine with Wago lever nuts, it's unlikely I gonna put more dumb switch in my house in the future, but receptales, they really need to start making these receptacles with GFCI like right now.
Wagos are for Wimps. Way more surface area, Current capacity and mechanical strength twisting and wire nutting.
If Wagos heat up they fail. Twisting and wire nutting will survive a house fire.
GFIC were created to create a new market segment not for the safety reasons everybody believes.
That's a great new design for outlets and switches. How well do they block air infltration?
I am starting to build my new workshop in about a month. If these came in 20 amp, which they don't. I'd outfit my entire shop with them.
I'm in the same boat. I'd love a 20 amp edition.
Wtf. I am 55. I never seen an outlet with screws. Btw i live in switzerland
Do these require a ground wire or does it come self grounded?
All three prong receptacles require a ground in the US, including this one.
@@LRN2DIY some have a ground wire, others ground to the box. I was just wondering if it needed a wire or would ground to the box
@@bluehannah8696 Ah, I see what you're asking. So that depends on the box and if the box is grounded, but doesn't actually change based on what outlet you use. It would be awesome if an outlet could self ground but that's more about the structure/wiring of the building and how the ground is set up.
I dont trust waycos or these, i trust mechanically sound connections....i replace stab in connections regularly
What about red wires tho 😅
Give it some time, somebody will find a way to get shocked.
Cool. Leave it to Leviton. These should become the new standard for outlets! I could install these without asking my hubby which is hot and which is not.
Do they make them for a 220 connection?
It would be even better if it is GFCI
wow, where were these 255 years ago!? lol, i would like a bunch!
it might also depend on patents 🤔
Funny how this guy (and others) claimed using back stabs were “wrong” but these are the future… when they are literally the SAME THING but with a tab 😂
Some people love and will always use back stabbing - I get it. But reusability, multiple gauges and multiple wire types are all differences between this and back stabbing.
But it’s not really the same. The amount of metal to metal connection is far greater on these than it is on a backstab.
4:49 utterly pointless test to even do since these things are tucked away inside a box behind a plastic faceplate once installed anyway.
Fun fact, the other day my nephew cracked a faceplate and exposed the outlet, he put such a big hole in it that I had to go immediately get a new faceplate. So things do happen.
Regardless of how safe the outlets are, you should still tell people to never mess with, and especially tempt fate by wrapping your hand around, a HOT (energized) outlet. "Do not try this at home" is not enough in my opinion, especially since you do these for the non-professional home DIYer.
"Common sense" isn't so common anymore.
I have hundreds of dollars worth of switches and receptacles carefully organized by color, style and function. But if this is what it looks like, I could see myself throwing it all away and starting over.
DON'T

The electrician industry doesn’t benefit from making things easier to understand and easier to DIY so I doubt you’ll see things go in this direction. Not to mention more and more regulations are moving away from DIY work.
Lol
Through your tutorial you showed what we refer to as a WEGO ?? The piece of literal junk that took place of real wire nuts. I have several of these to be faulty ! Is there no UL RATING for devices any longer ?? You are really outta your knowledge here. Backstabbers are extremely unreliable
These are not backstabbers. They have a lever which is a totally different mechanism.
… did it he say that in the video…?
"backstab" should be against code (remembering, of course, that it's not the same as "back wire".
We agree about back stabbers, but I'm not sure why you're saying I'm outta my knowledge...
Yeah he sad that hahaha.
I dont care that will never be used in mu home or shop I will stay with the old school set up and whats so hard to hock up wire white and ground is on one side and black is the only one on the other side and one more thing that your problem if you buy cheep contractor grade will all ways be better then that junk outlet that you keep showing people you never show other outlets that are better then that .50 cent junk one
Let me guess, only good for 14 gauge? Would be good for a landlord special...
12 or 14. Solid or stranded.
