- ,,,, we are going to start this engine,, but first let's talk about ignition,, yes it's time to pull your chair a little closer,, we are going to start 'er up the first time using an old ford buzz coil and 12 volt battery,, it's easy, and this set up will work on most sparkplug fired engines, all you need is a modified bracket and a contact point 'thing a ma jig',, oh, and a charged up battery,, this engine is a 1929 McCormick Deering, 1-1/2 hp, type "m", flywheel engine built by the International Harvester co,, leave a comment, subscribe, pass it on, to be continued, this is # 2 of 3 with a follow up video,,
So it's a home made set of points. I once put a set of 62 chev 6 cycl points in a 65 honda 90 trail bike ran pretty good. Honda had no more points for that model of bike. So some times you got to do what you got to do to make it work.....
I replaced a switch just like that on the lid of Maytag washer. Also I have some of those switches I replaced on my actuator on my solar tracker. So Im familiar with the micro switch. I guess they have many uses and they come in real handy.
Batteries and coils were used prior to low tension ignition systems, but because batteries werent always available, self contained ignition systems like the ek mag and mags like the webster tri polar oscillator were developed.
Basically the micro switch is the trip ignitor.
Nice simple setup and is dependable untill the battery runs low,,then it just stalls since it has no way of developing any or a strong enough spark to ignite the fuel.
Sure you can, simple test is to hook it up to a spark plug and ground it then trip the magneto,if you dont see a spark,or its a weak spark the you need to backtest everything starting with the plug, the wire, the ground, the two pass through coils, the lead outs, the condensor, the points and the magnet.
All the items are testable and repairable or replaceable.
I Have it's twin, How can I find its value. It's amazing that pulling two magnets apart in the ignition makes enough elect. to fire the plug!
,,, wico ek magneto,, got to have a good one,, videos coming up,,
wow it's been almost three years. hope u r doing good.
3 Simple things , Air, Fuel, Spark. the sparks is the quickest thing to check.
Is there a way to bench test the mag , or rebuild a mag and then test it ,i see what you be doing run the engine with a known source of ignition. i like the videos , nice work.
Good stuff
Hey, it's Johnny. Love the videos. Will be in town this weekend. Will you be home?
,, almost everything electrical now has a micro switch in it now, microwave oven, washing machine, clothes dryer, the last hospital bed motor unit I took apart had eight high quality switches in it,, big office type copiers,,, even the on off button on this computer i'm using has a micro switch inside the case,,,
so good to see you in your vid! always wondered what you looked like. love your vids. and where did you learn all this?
u r very smart
Sam one more thing Do you plan on doing a video on reworking a Wico ek mag?
Sam were can I get one of those micro switches so I can do the same thing to my engine?? Tks
Try Mouser Electronics. For the switch. The bracked will have to be fabbed.
Is it going to start ?
,, sounds so easy,,, everything checked out ok,, but,, she said the engine won't start,, now what?
You were clean shaven when you started this project weren't you?
,,, Rip Van Winkle,, one foot long,
,,, if you watch the "baling wire engine" series you will see a step by step way that I grease the whole engine,,, the answer is a grease cup on the end of the crankshaft,, thanks,
,,, one turn?,,,
I have a 3 hp M that was my Uncle's. It is missing the mixer (3 needle). I put some fuel directly into the intake and it fired so I'm trying to find a mixer. Can you help? (jlterry@wctc.net)
