Okay.... I like you using the slab steel, but I'd consider using knife blanks. It'll save you on all that work time shaping a blade. The chain is a neat idea... sort of a Mad Max, end of the world kind of thing.
Thank you, but this 1095 steel was made just for knife making and kept its edge even after all the testing I did. I am sure it can be better, but as of now it is better than a lot of other homemade knives made by other people.
As easily as it looked to drill. I would surmise the steel didn't come to you hardened. You may have bought it from a knifemaking supplier. But the steel isn't made for knife making. 1095 is a type of steel that can be used for making a knife. It was cut in to the billet size to accommodate knifemaking at best. Part of making a knife, the most important and critical part, is heat treat. Educate yourself. with a wealth of knowledge available these days there's no justified reason not to be. Brushing off the excellent advice above shows a lack of a desire to learn. Freethinking is about gaining knowledge. Try it
@@squiglylon Thank you, but it was harder to drill then what you see. Even with a drill press, it was still some what hard. It only looks easy because I do a lot of video cut outs. The steel is pretty hard for what it is, that is why on the testing, I really did push it hard. The ice chopping would flatten any weaker sharp edge, but did not on this one. There is always room for improvement, but I think for what it is, it is pretty good. Thank you for the comment.
@@dmitriblyat8237 It's ok, we all have our own views. This was one of the hardest things I have ever made and it was my first knife I made from a flat bar of steel.
I love how detailed and clear your instructions are.
Thank you. I do my best in each video.
I appreciate that you're showing us how to make a knife without needing a forge.
It's great for those of us who don't have access to that equipment🔥
Yeah, knife making is really hard no matter what. This knife may not be all that great, but is still a good starting point. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I've been looking for a new hobby to try
Thank you for watching.
I never knew making a knife could be this straightforward! Thanks for the tips
Thank you for watching. It can be difficult sometimes.
Very informative! Could you show how to sharpen it properly in the next one?🙏
Thank you. I know there are better ways on sharpening a blade, but I think it is fine how I did it in the video.
Excellent walkthrough, John. Really clear instructions!
Thank you, I tried to make it look simple.
It's inspiring to see how you're able to make something useful with just basic tools.
Yeah, it is a little hard to come up with the idea on how to do it. Thank you.
Watching you work with the steel bar is mesmerizing✨
Thank you, glade you like it.
Bravo! Turned out great even without forging👏
Thank you, it was still a lot of work.
Love the creativity here🤩 Just what I needed!
Thank you very much.
I've always wanted to try knife making, this video makes it look so accessible!!
It is still hard, but is a good starting point.
The final product looks amazing! It's hard to believe it was made without forging. You've definitely got some serious skills!⚡
Thank you, it was still a lot of work and could be better, but is still a nice knife.
Amazing tutorial! Can’t wait to try this out myself!
Thank you, and good luck on it 👍
You're so brave for uploading this.
Thank you? But why brave?
@@john_free_thinker RUclips kinda get cranky with weapon stuff.
@@dmitriblyat8237 Really? But I always put a warning at the start of every video. I might have to change to arts and craft next...
Lmao
@@huement Ok?
Excellent Work John, i really like that.
Thanks Mike. It was a lot of work to make this knife and it came out better than what I first thought it would.

That is true and they are both about the same price... but where is the fun in that?
Have you ever considered adding a coat of any kind of oil before burning your wood?
I think it would be a nice touch of colour 🖖👌
I never done that before, I will have to keep that in mind next time. Thanks.
oh man, I want it, I want one... I want that one 😭😭😭
You could make one if you do it step by step.
Nice craftsmanship! Unique design. Well Done 👍🏼
Thank you, this was my first time making a knife. It was really hard to make but still came out good.
The knife Rambo would want as a backup knife ❤
Love the music btw 😊
Thank you. This was one of the hardest things I have ever made, and was much stronger and sharper than what I first thought.
Not too bad but you need to learn how to harden your steel

Woah there, partner. You've crossed the line.

I can't win them all, either way, thanks for watching. Maybe next time it will be better...
