  • "Last Train To London" by ELO off of their "Discovery" album which came out in 1979 and featured the late, great Kelly Groucutt on bass.
From "Last Chance on the Stairway" to "Last Train To London".
I thought this song tied in nicely to my last upload. Not only are the titles similar, but this was another song that was suggested by a few people and, like the Duran Duran song, I had never heard before. Most people know that I don't take requests, but that I do, sometimes, take suggestions. If someone makes a suggestion, I'll often respond with a, "I'll check it out." Whether I check it out immediately or not depends on how many replies I have in front of me. Sometimes I'll check them out immediately and let the person who left the suggestion know right then and there whether it has possibilities or not. Sometimes, they get lost in the shuffle. This was one of those songs that got lost in the shuffle but, thankfully, it was suggested numerous times over a significant period of time and, eventually, I did "check it out". I liked it immediately, even though it's essentially a disco song. Actually, according to Wikipedia, the entire album is very disco oriented. So much so that keyboardist, Richard Tandy, nicknamed the album "Disco-Very". The verse is a basic rock-riff, played in, what may be referred to as, a I, V, IV progression. It's separated by a really quick twiddly bit that I found much harder to play than I think I should have. It's actually REALLY quick and I had to focus on not digging in too hard so my plucking fingers would not spazz out. I also found the octave parts in the chorus to be pretty taxing as well and needed to conserve as much energy as I could. For a pretty straight forward song, there weren't many opportunities to rest up. And, the song just doesn't end. It seems to go on forever. It really was a tough one to play twice in a row as evidenced by the couple of F-Bombs and eye-rolls that I sprinkled throughout the song. I believe that Kelly Groucutt played primarily with a pick. I don't know how he managed that on this song.
I'd consider myself a casual ELO fan at best, but Lynn and I saw them a couple of years ago and it was one of the best show's I've ever seen. Lee Pomeroy was playing bass with them and he's fantastic. I think I have a clip or two in my "Concerts" playlist if you are interested.
I'm playing the Spector Legend through a SansAmp YYZ pedal.
Here's a link to an Unlisted version of the song using the newer model Spector Legend - • Last Train To London B...

Was there ever a better decade to be a bass player than the 70s?? I love the staccato notes on the high octaves! While engrossed in prog in my younger day I'd turn up my nose at disco... then I had to play a few songs for gigs and 1) they're harder to play than they sound (witness your ABBA covers) and 2) they require an entirely different kind of endurance. Fun song - I used to roller skate to this back in the day. :P I'm pleasantly surprised lately what you'll post. Thanks as always for posting.

Excellent job, one of my fav. One amazing item i figured out with Lee Pomeroy is that not only does he play left handed - he's playing it inverted so the high string is on top. Even more kudo's once i learened that.
Had the pleasure of seeing Kelly Groucutt play at NY State Fair back in the day with i believe it was ELO Part II - he had such an excellent stage presence.

Thank you. Yes, Dave P is amazing. We've seen him with both ELO and Yes and he's top shelf for sure. I knew a local fellow who learned the same way. In most cases, it's a matter of logistics and finances...left handed instruments are harder to come by (especially back in the day) and the costs associated with the modifications that would need to be done to flip the strings. People learn to adapt to what's available.
      Very cool memory!

I'm a long time fan who loves your work, specially the Rush songs; I never commented before because I actually never comment on anything, but now I had to take a few moments to say how much I enjoyed watching this! Your struggle towards the end surely made me smile! :) Congratulations from Brazil, and keep the good work!

That's just fabulous, Troy. You have reminded me of another haunting bass-line from my past. I love a beautiful melody, and this bass-line is gorgeous. Ear-candy. And surprisingly complex - (Abba-esque)

Great job Troy this is not an easy song so many odd hand movements maybe this is why Kelly Groucutt played with a pick but as you said in the description it's a wonder how he did

Ha!!! I missread the title and thought you were doing Last Train To Clarksville. But being that ELO is a MAJOR influence and a number of my early songs ended up sounding like Jeff Lynne songs... I love this too.
