    Pasochoa and Base Camp
On January 7, the boys enlisted for the first acclimatization summit. The extinct volcano Pasochoa, which is located a few kilometers southwest of Quito.
The first thing they did when leaving the hotel was to go to a hiking and mountaineering shop (which abound in Quito) and there they booked the missing equipment to make the summits of Cotopaxi and Cayammbe.
After leaving Quito, they arrived at a small village (Sangolqui) where Manuel was provisioned for the next days of expedition and for the stay in his "Base Camp".
Then they entered the mountain by a stone road until reaching a height of 3250 meters in height, where a grid prevented them to continue with the vehicle. It's time to start walking. The first part of the footpath is through a dirt road bordered by a pine forest and a stream channeled on one of its sides. The road took them in a while to a house that seemed to be under construction or abandoned and had a sign that read "Pasuna". From then on they began to cross in cross country by several plots surrounded with barbed wire until arriving at the ridge that would take them to the summit. They began to see the typical Andean "pajonal" of Ecuador. The weather was always cloudy, cold and with scattered drizzles. At 3750 meters high. They realize that in the center of the mogotes of the pajonal there are accumulations of snow. They keep walking. Suddenly, as they rounded a ridge, they found each other in front of the Cotopaxi. They stopped the march to be ecstatic watching the landscape. It was then that the boys also knew (of sight) the Antisana, another imposing volcano of Ecuador. Diego (Manuel's son) also showed them Sincholagua, the next summit they planned to do, and also where Manuel's "Base Camp" was.
The rest lasted until the cold and drizzle reminded them that they had to walk to keep warm. Near the 4000 meters of height. The road began to become increasingly steep, becoming almost vertical near the top at 4200 meters high. This first summit in Ecuador was barely higher than the Eagle Peak in Venezuela, but it was the first time they ascended to a volcano.
The Pasochoa exploded thousands of years ago, leaving its crater in the form of a semicircle. A curious fact is that in Ecuador all the extinct volcanoes have exploded towards the west.
At the summit they took the respective photographic session, ate and settled to contemplate the landscape and to imagine how the volcano exploded.
This first summit was realized with the intention of beginning the process of acclimatization to the heights. Fortunately none felt the symptoms of altitude sickness.
The descent was quiet and in a short time they arrived back at Manuel's van to move to his "Base Camp", which is a country cabin that Manuel has to host the tourists who hire him to visit Ecuador. On the top floor of the house are the rooms. Jesus and Eduardo stayed in what is called Antisana, as the window overlooked this volcano (seen east). While Kónrad and Ramón stayed in the room that was called Cotopaxi (with a view to the south).
The attention of Manuel and his lady were first rate. Manuel's wife joined the mountaineering activity, collaborating in the logistics of the "Base Camp".
