    Hi Del. I love all your videos. Very helpful. Just wanted to mention that your battery is not gel filled. It is an AGM battery. (Absorbed Glass Mat) Glass mats are soaked in acid and pressed against the plates. This is different to a gel filled product. In general, these batteries should only be used in the upright position unless the manufacturer says they can be used on their side. They are maintenance free and valve regulated. This means they won't go bang if overcharged. A valve will release like a pressure cooker. You will be able to see the valves on top of the battery. Round circles in the plastic top. Still a great battery but not quite as top tier as Gel. Gel is still filled with Acid but the acid is suspended in a special Gel that goes hard. This means it can not spill even if the battery cracks and as you say, can be installed upside down or on its side. Just thought I would mention it. Cheers, Lee @ Exide.

    I replaced my factory fitted battery (yuasa) with Shido LiFePO4 last year. Cost me nearly 3 times more than the acid battery which Triumph sells here in India but a worthwhile "upgrade". Bike cranks much faster and battery drain is a lot slower too. Spec is the same as the battery you installed on your bike.

    This happened to me the other day on the Enfield and it might be the same on some of the Harleys/cruisers/etc: If your battery is held onto the side of the bike then check the battery strap for nicks, tears and splits. Mine broke, the battery had fallen against the chrome battery cover, melting the Earth wire and producing a sudden urge to swear lots...

    I've got 90° arms that attach to each terminal but no matter which way I configure the brass fittings I cant get them to 'inside' front fit the arms as they only 'outside' front fit.

    Alright, Del?
    Just an old subscriber here. You saved me bacon soo many times before, unreal. Really enjoy your videos.
    I got this issue and dunno how to fix it. Maybe you could help.
    I got a street triple 575 - 08 plate. This thing was trouble since I got it. I broke down more times than I can count.
    It has its regulator rectifier and stator changed - It was faulty as they all are from the factory - common fault.
    One day I tried to start the bike to go to work, the bike did not start. I'm thinking, dead battery. Changed the battery 3 months ago, and bought a YOUASSA, you'd like to think that should work fine, so it did, for 3 months, but I now got the same problem again. Before when I jump-start it, it showed me on the multimeter 14V, banging innit.
    Yesterday I took the bike out for a ride, and the engine just stopped as I was riding. Pushed it back home, 3 miles :O jump-started it again. It now only shows me on the multimeter 10.5V while running.
    What do you think?
    Surely I cannot have two faulty batteries one after another. Worth mentioning that I disconnected my heated grips and any extras.
    How can I check the stator or the regulator in order to eliminate them one by one?
    Any ideas?
    Kind regards mssieur :D

  • @Vanrocco66
    @Vanrocco66 10 лет назад +1

    Hey Del, ... I bought a Yuasa (very good but not the best) battery for the Triumph last month. Cost me $89.00 over here! Just curious, do you see yourself having the same 4 bikes in your garage a year from now? ..... Paint update on the rear cowl coming soon ..

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  10 лет назад

      Hi Jeff, Yuasa batteries are pretty good, been around for decades... as for the 4 bikes, the Bandit is going not long after it's finished, for myself the Scrambler and the Tiger are the best combination of two bikes to cover every application of my usage that I've ever had... but I cannot speak for Penny, that's her choice, she loves her Bonneville, so who knows!... how about you?

    • @Vanrocco66
      @Vanrocco66 10 лет назад

      I may consider selling the Harley in the spring. If I do, I will look to buy another but I will take my time and wait until something knocks me down. I am enjoying the Bonneville, I just wish it had more low end power. It is a fun ride though.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  10 лет назад

      Vanrocco66 Sounds like a plan buddy, i remember your white Fatboy when we first heard from you.... as for power on the Bonneville..even in factory trim they can loose any harley round the streets as they weigh half as much, and can go round corners...lol

    • @Vanrocco66
      @Vanrocco66 10 лет назад

      True but the difference in low end power between my 1200 and the Bonny is noticeable for sure. .... Is it possible to increase the rear sprocket to a 45 tooth and decrease the front as well? Or is it usually only one or the other?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  10 лет назад

      Vanrocco66
      Your Harley is 300cc bigger, but 65lbs heavier...you've taken weight off both bikes so the difference will be about the same, the weight differnance amounts to a small person on the back...plus the suspension in the Bonneville works...and harleys just dont, even my XR1200X stuggled to steer even half as good as a Thruxton...its this flexibility that makes the Triumph such a fun bike to ride...i ride mine everywhere like i stole it..all i did on my Dyna was scrape the frame and fear hedges... power is nothing without control aye..! when i get another Harley it will be 'aswell' as the Scrambler, i cant give up that swervery for anything..its just too much fun!
      You can buy a 19 tooth front sprocket from TEC as a simple upgrade to gearing, and it'll give you a more relaxed top speed...but it then wont launch off the line with as much gusto...its always a trade off.! here;- www.tecbikeparts.com/triumph_parts_page4.html

  • @akasa231
    @akasa231 10 лет назад

    Great info there Del, exactly what it says in the Harley owners manual....all I can add is if you still have a slow cranker the starter motor is suspect, and if you have a scrap metal yard near by they will give you a few quid for the old battery (lead) ;-)

    • @Moonfleet41

    Happy New Year Del
    Greetings from Vancouver Island, Canada.
    Oil coolers.
    Have you installed the HD version on a Sportster?
    I have a 2012, XL 1200 C, and I need to get the heat down.
    Or
    Do you have knowledge of similar oil coolers that might be better.
    I'm needing the I tire kit and not just the coolest.
    Anyways thought I'd drop a line to get your spin on it.
    Thanks

      If you haven't already found out The leads go on first because they will make a better connection with the terminals so starting the bike would be easier. Any accessories go after the main leads because you don't really need then as they aren't important.

      Hi Prasad, if you're in a warm climate, and you keep the battery on a tender when not in use, or alternatively you use it regularly every day, then the 9amp should be fine... it's only in cold weather or long periods of lay up that it may struggle... as long as it's kept fully charged, it should be fine!

    Hey , how are you? me again , just to let you know that I serviced my front brakes and they are working like a champ !!! Thank you so much for all the info .
    Quick question for you , Because the lack of knowledge on how to use a torque wrench , I Realized that went over the 40 N the calipers are suppose to get then I readjusted them again to the right spec with lock threat .
    Do you think this can be an issue?
    Just thinking that if you go over the right amount of force maybe it will never be the same if you readjust to a less force ....
    Thank you for your time

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  10 лет назад

      Hi Mariano, You must NOT use thread lock on your caliper bolts, it can cause them to jam in there and damage the thread whne you take them out later...the heat of the brakes will bake the thread lock hard and make it solid....best thing is to take them out, clean the bolts and use copperslip on them....and buy a small torque wrench to do the job right....its a wise investment as you will use it again and again... hope that helps.. Del.

    Nice video. I'm curious though, since these batteries have a extra set of terminals, why not attach the wires for the battery minder on them and not bother connecting them with the main power cable for the bike?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  7 лет назад

      Thinking a out it buddy.. that means poking a second screw through the plate which will hit the first one inside..!.!!!!

    • @kobolila-yt
      @kobolila-yt 7 лет назад

      These batteries are unique in that they have two sets of terminals allowing you to use them regardless if your old battery has the + on he right or left just by turning the battery around (as you did to make sure you were setting it up correctly to match your old one at 8:54).
      After you have connected your battery to the bike you still have the two plugged & unused terminals in the back that are free. The manufacture actually mentions in their own videos that you can use these for accessories.
      My question was, why not remove those plugs and, with another pair of screws, attach your minder to those?
      A resourceful fellow like yourself could come up with the means to make a protective cover for them. Perhaps, since this would only be for a trickle charger with low voltage/amps, you can use a non-conducting nylon bolt, with a nylon washer under the head, covering the eyelets to your minder. It appears from the video there is a sufficient area on the terminal for the eyelet from the minder to make contact without the need for a metal bolt. This may then act as a means of both fastening the wires and covering the contact point. Just a thought.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  7 лет назад +1

      OOOh the back terminals... lol... i haven't laid hands on a motobatt for a year or two and sold this bike a while ago... Yeah, of course, i forgot about the "Four" terminals...i was thinking you meant just tab them through the side hole of the one you use... and of course, you could use those back holes for any accessories connections like charger, heated suit plug, the new battery tabbed hot grips etc etc.. and just keep the main ones free for the bike only... good thinking... you see thats why i like RUclips... thanks foroyur input buddy.. take care.. Dont have a multimeter mate, never had cause to use one, if your battery is more then 5 years old, there is every chance it may just need replacing....check it for voltage if you have a M/M, if you're getting anything less than 11 volts on drain down, then you probably have a dead cell..

      Hi David....ive had three of these now, and not a single problem, all i can do is go by what ive found myself in use.....it spinns the motor way faster then the OE battery, even when it was new..and as for going flat...i always use a better minder as i use heated grips most of the time, and short'ish trips...plus alarms can drag them down too.... they are well warrantied so if i had any issues id just send it back.. but not had to so far mate..

    hi del i have a yamaha xjr1300sp 2003 model that i need to buy new battery for i want the motobatt battery but the one for my bike is a mbt14b4 and only comes with 2 terminals NOT 4. i am running lots of acc to my old battery. i found another motobatt battery that has the 4 terminals for fitting extras to it but the size is 15mm wider this is no problem as there is plenty of room after i remove the rubber block i found in my battery box. but my question is the battery number is mbyz16h. so i am guessing its a higher amp age, a extra 2 amp i think going by the 2 types . is this safe to change to the higher one as i really like the idea of 4 terminals not just the 2 . thanks del great videos by the way love watching them

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад

      Hi John, increasing the ampage of your battery by two is no problem, but it's not necessary either, am sure there is an equivalent ytx14 with 4 terminals, all the Motobatts I've ever seen have 4 terminals... why not check with Wemoto to see if they have a 4 terminal version for your bike?? Am sure that if Motobatt make one, which am sure they do, then Wemoto can get you one if they don't already have it... after all it's better to fit the correct battery if possible... let us know how you get on, would be surprised if they don't have a14amp with 4 terminals... (by the way also, the term Quadflex on the battery name I believe indicated 4 terminals, so if the 14amp you're looking at is a Quadflex battery, then it obviously has 4 terminals... perhaps check the battery again,as they always cover two of them up with plastic caps) - once again, let us know how you get on mate !

    Hi Del, I'm in Canada and like to ride whenever the snow stops and the temperature creeps above freezing. My bike(2012 Triumph Scrambler) won't turn over after a couple of days in the cold and stalls easily once started. The battery is old but rather than replace it with a stocker, I'd like to replace the battery with something a bit stronger. I was wondering about Lithium Ion? Do you have any experience with these? or advice?
    You and Penny do an absolutely fantastic job. I've watched all of your scrambler/bonnie vids now (and most of the others, also). And while I have only tackled small projects like bar-end mirrors and a BC seat, the videos are great tutorials. My goals are to fit a lighter exhaust, the TEC shocks and prog springs (TEC won't ship to Canada, unfortunately, and I have to order from the States for much more $), and because I am short, would like to find a way to lower a couple of inches. Well enough rambling... great job and thanks for any advice.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  7 лет назад

      Hey buddy.. good to hear from you... With your battery, yes the Lith Ion batteries offer one great feature... "size".. see, a regular battery cannot be upgraded to one with much higher 'cold cranking amps' because the battery itself actually gets much bigger... and then they wont fit in the battery tray for the bike... But as the Li Ion batteries are so much smaller, you can buy one for a much bigger bike, something rated for a 1450cc Harley will have a hell of a lot more CCA than your Triumph needs.. and as they are miniaturized, it will still fit in the battery box with ease... then you can pack around the battery with dense sheets of foam to insulate it from the cold too... that would certainly work for your application...
      I have just taken my TEC shocks off today,. not because there is anything wrong with them, far from it.. but after 3 years with them, we have upgraded to some YSS Gg shocks, and they are awesome by comparison.. lost of money, over £500 over here.. but available from Wemoto.com, they may be the answer if they will ship to Canada, also, if you have to pay so much extra for the TEC shocks, then they wont be that much more expensive in the end... have a watch of the video we post tomorrow, and you can see them for yourself, maybe you'd upgrade to those instead...
      Thanks so much for your kind support, buddy.. its good to know we have been of help all the at from England.. taker care, soon be spring..

      OK, you didnt mention the alarm, any security system will drain your battery, and it makes no difference how many amps it has, the alarm will still drain it.. so maybe invest in a battery minder so you can leave it on charge all the time and keep the battery topped up.. that will cure the issue my friend.. Hi Del, I have a '16 Triumph Scrambler and enjoyed many of your videos. Thanks for sharing your expertise! Quick question for you: It's been only 6 months since I bought my bike, but the stock battery died just this morning. This week, I rode it daily until 7pm last night with no problem. My situation:
    - I've been riding everyday for the past few weeks for my 5 mile, 15 min (round trip) in-town daily commute with it. So a total of 10 miles per day.
    - I don't do many long rides.
    - The only accesory attached to the battery is the 12V cigar jack for charging my phone.
    - I had no issue turning it on in the last five mornings this week. This happened just this morning.
    - I HAVE once let the battery die... This past summer I was abroad for a month without charging it.
    With all the information above, do you think it is the problem of the battery or am I not riding enough? I would love to hear your insight. Thanks!

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  7 лет назад

      Hello my friend, it's good to hear from you... I don't think there's anything wrong with your battery, it's more likely to be your usage... it is generally accepted that it takes about 5miles riding to replenish the battery power from one start up of the engine on a cold morning and that's without any accessories included... but as you have a phone charger, they can be notoriously heavy on the battery, because rather than just powering a device, such as a sat nav, you are actually using the bike's battery as a battery charger, so it's quite juice on power...
      So it's more than likely that you would need to ride at least 10miles if your phone is on charge at the same time to re-charge from your start up, and that's your entire commute.... I would imagine the best thing to do is buy a 'battery minder' of some description, and keep it plugged in when not using the bike... if you can't do this due to no power in your garage, then even just taking the bike for a good 20mile ride once every couple of weeks will be fine to recharge the battery fully, but before you do anything else, perhaps test the battery just to make sure it doesn't have a dead cell.. it should be reading almost 13volts at rest, and at least 12.5 with the engine running.... if it's reading less than 10, then you do, indeed, have a dead cell, but this could have been caused by the constant heavy use on it, and lack of charging.... hope that helps you, all the best, Del

    • @hyunjunshin731
      @hyunjunshin731 7 лет назад

      Moonfleet41 Okay, I see how powering and charging can be different in terms of load on the battery. I'll try not to charge as much unless I go on a long ride. Seem to be ok so far mate, there's also the fuel pump weakness which likes to strand you in the middle of nowhere, but then all bikes have their gremlins, all in all, the Tiger is an amazing, do everything, bike... even gave me consistent low 12's on the drag strip at the Bulldog Bash! What more could you want from a big adventure barge eh?!

    Great vid as ever Del - out of interest why does the main positive lead from the bike need to be the first one to connect up to the battery post, what difference could it possibly make?? Always learning great stuff from you! Cheers 'n' thanks - TMF

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  10 лет назад

      Its all about preventing an accidental arc accident.... if you touch both terminals at the same time "Bridge", you'll be in for a nasty jolt.....if the earth is connected to the frame...then the bike becomes a giant battery terminal....think about it, if the earth is connected, then the frame becomes part of the battery....and If you accidently arc against the frame (which is right next to it) while connecting the live...it'll be exactly like bridging both terminals at the same time....but.if you leave the earth lead till last, then you cannot arc out the live if you touch the frame...so the frame is isolated from the battery while you connect the live...then connect the live last as you cannot arc the earth to the frame..its the same polarity..... got it..?... lol Hope that helps mate.. Del.

      @TheMissendenFlyer 10 лет назад

      Moonfleet41 Cheers Del for the full reply - I completely get the whole arcing risk thing (learnt the hard way on a Range Rover!), my point is, on whichever terminal +ve or -ve, why do you connect the bike main wires before any ancillaries (heated grips, etc)?? That's the ordering I don't get.....sorry about that! ;0) Lovin' your work as ever, do keep it up!! - TMF

      TheMissendenFlyer
      Oh sorry,,,duh.. i get it now...(told you i was an idiot..lol) Ok, you connect the power supply leads to the battery first to get the best and most direct connection....the current doesnt have to pass through other layers of steel (washers) before it gets to the power lead... just good practice mate..

    its funny you mention about bottles of acid... we use rob hunter batterys for our school bikes... when they arrived i was shocked that i got quite a sizable bottle of sulphuric acid to put into them... i assumed health and safety laws wouldnt allow any old bod like me to be playing with bottles of acid... if anyone is to get that style of battery be bloody careful when filling them!
    to be fair to them though they work fine with all the bikes...

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  10 лет назад

      They do work fine mate, but the difference is they only last about 2-3yrs, yet they cost about 75% of the cost of this thing and worst of all, they can explode in a fire... it's not that the acid is explosive, as it's not, but acid filled batteries are meant to be open and vented to allow fumes to escape on hot days and if there is a fire and the pressure builds up, they vent safely, but with a sealed battery that contains acid, the pressure builds with the heat of the fire until they blow the top off, spraying acid everywhere... makes me wonder why the hell they're legal! (and before you ask, the gel batteries have no air in them, they are illed to the top and don't emit gas when charging, so if they melt, they just melt)...

    • @kyrus13
      @kyrus13 10 лет назад +1

      Moonfleet41 i totally agree with you mate... the last bit of my comment was more of a way of saying im not picking on hunter batterys solely... as far as acid batterys go they are just as good as any of the others... for my pride a joy i would use a gel one

    Hi Del, I'm baaaack lol
    I've got a few weeks off starting Saturday when I get new tires, touring scottoiler and a brake strip clean (Getting a garage to do as they have the wheels off anyway and I CBFA as they're a good bunch of lads) lol. Have you ever used ACF50? I know you like the scottoiler stuff but last year I had issues on the pan with it being washed off as its water based, ACF being oil based not so much on the bandit so far (and when rubbed in creates a nice polished look).
    Project lemon bandit lasted 2 months before I got sick of it, not impressed with plastidip to be honest, blaze yellow faded quite quickly into the frost yellow, so when I get the RT12 I'll be getting professional decals done (plus "emergency warning equipment" aka blues and twos) for the local blood bikes.
    Also going through the process of RoSPA so I can ride for staffs and shrops blood bikes (I just do fundraising and dispatch at the moment). My instructor is insanely smooth and fast (ex police examiner for 20 years and IoM TT racer). Learning so much from him about how to ride the bike but I learnt how to look after my bike thanks to your videos. If I ever find a sound setup I like within my helmet for vlogging you'll defiantly get a big shout out

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  10 лет назад

      Hi Mark, sounds like you're having fun mate, and a worthy cause too.
      With the ACF50, yes ive used it in the past, but its not right for bikes, if used on a motor it cooks on and cracks off...then when you do want to clean off the crap, it takes paint with it in worst cases....also on cold parts it sets like wax and takes parafin to clean it off again, its never good to leave a bike dirty all winter with so much salt about, if the weather gets through (and it will) then it festers till you get to clean it in spring, then you have horrible corrosion....
      Best route if you want a bike that still looks nice in the spring is a daily pre-ride coat of WD40 and a weekly clean off with hot soapy water, and re-apply.... that way you keep a watch on the damage that the winter is doing every step of the way and can deal with tiny chips as the appear... many will praise it...but usually those who dont care to clean thier bike and want an easy solution...
      Ride safe buddy, and dont place too much praise in fancy qualifications, certificates make rubbish body armour..!

    • @markgr1nyer
      @markgr1nyer 10 лет назад

      I gently pressure washer the 'safe' areas of the bike every 2 weeks anyway, then get the sponge and muc off on the rest of it, trying to keep it in 'show' ready condition for any stalls I attend on behalf of SSBB, does mean I'm very busy anyway.
      And when he first told me all the things he'd done I took it with a pinch of salt (I remembered the FRO) until he did a commentary ride. He was seeing and dealing things I hadn't even considered looking for lol. The certificates aren't good body armour, but the training to get them can be if they aren't used arrogantly (He accepts constructive criticism from me which I find amazing considering his experience and my lack of in comparison). We got on straight away because the first thing he said to me after listing everything he's done was "they mean nothing without experience., and even less on the slab". I Didn't think RoSPA had such realistic instructors or whatever they call themselves these days.
      Anyway, have a great and safe winter, and look after yourself and pitstop. I'll try and pop up now and again when I'm not rushed off my feet with everything lol

    Hello, I am French and I use a MotoBatt MBTX9U battery for my motorcycle (very good battery)
    I would like to know if it is possible to use the two + terminals and the 2 - terminals
    + and - on one side for the general supply of the motorcycle
    and for example the + and - on the other side for accessories
    thanking you in advance
    Best regards

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 года назад

      Bonjour monsieur, thank you for your message, and yes indeed, you can use those extra terminals for anything you like... that is why they are there... just be conscious not to overload the battery with directly wired parts, anything too heavy should go through a relay, which I'm sure you know, but to answer your question, the extra set of terminals can be used for accessories!

      @@Moonfleet41 Good evening sir,
      Thank you for your reply.
      You confirm my thought, so I am reassured.
      I will be able to use the other two terminals for the accessories,
      the only problem that remains for me to solve is to find a seller of the kit
      supplementary
      " MPT2-K Motobatt Terminal Kit because in France it cannot be found."
      Concerning overloads, I am very aware of it, there is no problem for me
      thanks again
      Best regards
