  • The M Ocean View has returned as of August 14, 2021! We finally caught the full journey on the line from its eastern terminus at Embarcadero Station to San Jose and Geneva next to Balboa Park. Along the way, we're treated to underground speed and above-ground views of West Portal, Stonestown, SF State, and the hills of Daly City (with a special BART train appearance thrown in as well).
May 15, 2021, marked the long-anticipated first day since the August 2020 meltdown that light rail trains returned to serve the Market Street subway. The K/T, N, and M lines are now finally running under Market Street once more. This makes full journeys on the M line, as this video features, once again possible!
May 15 also marked the first day since March 30, 2020, that historic streetcars returned to the streets of San Francisco to operate service on the F Market and Wharves line between Fisherman's Wharf and the Castro.
SFMTA shut down light rail service at the end of March 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic, replacing all trains with buses to reduce operating costs. The agency attempted to restart rail service with modifications in August, but major equipment problems and a positive COVID test within the operations control center prompted the agency to stop train service after just two days of operations.
As of the upload date of this video, the J, K/T, M, and N lines have returned to train service, while the L line is still served by buses. Since the shutdown, SFMTA has modified Metro service so that inbound J Church trains terminate at Church and Duboce instead of continuing down the Market Street Subway. This was done to improve service reliability in the notoriously congested tunnels of the system. More changes are likely to follow as train service is gradually restored.
Most Metro trains in service at this point are the new Siemens S200 LRV4's, which is featured in this video. However, there are a handful of older Breda sets out on the rails as the system gets back to normal.
We hope you all enjoy this full journey on the M Ocean View. We highly encourage everyone to check out the subway and historic streetcars that have returned after a more than yearlong absence!

The M must have the best views of any streetcar line in America. I remember riding thru Twin Peaks Tunnel back in the 70's in PCC cars with open windows. That was a fun ride. And Forest Hill was kinda spooky -- dimly lit and musty smelling.

That's so cool! I think the J Church takes the cake for the most scenic line due to the right-of-way section and the view you get at Dolores Park, but the M is still pretty good

Do you need to press a button if you want to get off on the next stop? Or its automatic even though nobody is getting off and on the train?

    • @BayAreaTransitNews

It depends on what the driver lets you do; sometimes all doors will open automatically and other times passengers have to push the button.

All stops in the tunnel are automatic. Usually, if someone doesn't request a stop on a stop outside the tunnels, then the train will skip that stop.

In the tunnels it's always gonna stop, above ground it's not gonna stop unless you press a button. Sometimes it depends on the driver too
