You mentioned having to go through a fence. I just wanted to remind everybody that if you have to go through fences, whether it's by accident or on purpose, don't forget to fix the fence after you're done. Used bailing twine makes a very good temporary fix. It's free from any rancher and very compact to put into a toolbox. Some years ago we had a fire engine purposely go through two fences but they didn't fix the fence when they left and 6hrs later we had horses on a major highway. Luckily, no one got hit. The sad part was half the first responders were ranchers and should have known better. :(
I know it's really irrelevant to the topic of this video but I think you might have convinced me that I need to move out to Oregon. I constantly find myself in awe of the life you live. I'm not even talking about your morals or principles - I'm talking about the environment and that way of life. You're an inspiration, truly.
I respectfully suggest you might add a 60 inch HiLift sheep herders jack with a "rescue" accessory that works as a spreader, puller etc etc ..... I have carried such a tool from South America to the Yukon and Alaska. It IMHO is one of the single most useful emergency tools I can add to my off road vehicles.
Spread an A or B pillar on a vehicle or use to lift a crushed roof or firewall to free a injured person if the jaws of life aren't near by.
Also... A couple of Halguard 25 pound fire extinguishers or at the very least a fire gel blanket in the hard container .
Just a couple of suggestions to consider if they apply and will work for ya..... Stay safe, God Bless the Firefighters.
Cody, what trick I learned is on your spare tire put your valve stem up. Not on the bottom. When loading firewood or whatever you'll eventually hit it. And your spare tire will be flat.😄 I have lost a tire that way. Rrrrrrr .I keep my pick up the same way ready for an emergency. My friends think it's funny. But I've used it so many times.

Cody, many years ago when I lived not so far from you, (scenery) we seldom went into the woods without a "Handyman" jack, aka Hi-Lift. It would be great if you could explore some of the many things you can do with them (safely can be an issue) around the home place, in the field, or even in an emergency/rescue situation. I've never known a woodsman that wasn't at least passing familiar with them Actually I was a little surprised not to see one included in your tool box and or kit. I apologize if you've already gone over this topic before. You could get very creative with it and your new 'come-alongs', a block or two, and basically highlight how to multiply one man's muscle power especially if your stuck. Great episode BTW.
I agree with you whole-heartedly about volunteers. I'm the Chief of a local volunteer Search and Rescue team and we have a hard time getting volunteers. The other problem is the commitment part. They want to volunteer, but only when it's convenient for them. This was a great video and I will be sharing it with my team members from EVAC so that they may hear your wisdom. Also your packing of you truck has given me some ideas for changes to my gear and placement in my vehicle. Thank you so much for this inspiring video!!!

I've been talking with friends today about the Christians in Mosul, having to leave home abruptly with what they can carry. It would be wise for all of us to consider better preparation for all manner of unexpected events in life.
This has inspired me to re-think what I have as help needs in all my family vehicles....Awesome!
Enjoy that Kenndy Kit toolbox. My grandfather worked their for 34 years. They made great tool boxes back in the days before the company sold. Very well built and last for years! Always love to see those.
I liked your jumper cables. I have a set just like them. Most people don't realize the cheap cables will overheat and melt the insulation if you crank the starter too long.

Cody as always another great video. Watching your wildland series has really made me want to get back into volunteering. I used to volunteer my time as a medic 2 weekends a month.
I have always tried to be well prepared and keep my rig ready to roll out and help when my friends or family need anything. You take it to the next level and make me motivated to get my stuff much more organized so I can be better prepared to help out. I always want to be able to take my truck and help whoever I can should a natural disaster or something crazy happen near me.

I found that exact gas tank today. I found it deep in the woods and the Mississippi river probably washed it up and I'm going to clean it up tomorrow, it says USMC on the bottom and US on each side of it. So that's cool that it's military. I find everything in those woods, I've found an air tank, knives, life jackets, etc. I get it all to myself because the Mississippi floods it then goes back down so your boots sink completely and most people don't like mud so I get all the cool stuff
And does anybody know where I can buy the original nozzle for the gas tank because mine is gone, I have the screw on cap but not the funnel
andy pilman Check different online military surplus shops, I have seen extra spouts on them before. Ebay is another option as well.
andy pilman I've got two of those gas cans, they are poorly designed, if you found it and it is not too rusty, of course you can make it useable, but there are better designs out there, IMHO, if you were going to buy one.
You can get a new spout or cap on E-bay, just search Blitz Jerry Can Vintage.

depends on where you live. Army surplus stores (or even a military guy in the neighborhood may be helpful) or thrift stores or car repair shops sell stuff like that. Maybe even big box sports or DIY-stores like Cabela's, home depot or Lowe's. I'd also look for it on craigslist or online. BTW I've pulled lots of cool stuff out of the water and the mud, too, ever since I was 13 or so.

Professionally I have been a fraud/fire investigator for the insurance industry for over 25yrs. My degree is in Fire Science Technology from West Virginia University. I'm also a WVU-RESAIII-IFSTA Instructor. I can vividly recall my first years as a vollie, we had to beg, borrow and steal to get the proper equipment to fight fire the safe and proper way. But after many years of blood, sweat and tears the West Side Volunteer Fire Dept, Kanawha County, WV is one of the leading depts. 2 class A pumpers, class A heavy duty rescue, 1500g tanker, mini+pumper/brush and 6whl rescue ATV. 40+ members with First Responders program with 6 emt-b & 4 paramedics.
I've turned several of our members on to your channel, especially my 22yo son, who is now a fourth generation firefighter. He's a NFPA level II FF, EMT-B, level II Haz Mat, Level II Auto Ex. and WVU-RESAIII-IFSTA INSTRUCTOR. He's in Rescue SCUBA Divers class now.
WSVFD run 450 fire 1200 med calls a year.
And as you say, we need recruits badly. We've tapped into the local high school and Scout Troops (I'm an Eagle Scout myself) to try and gain a steady base of young and eager talent. Several of our members have went onto be Career Firefighter jobs. So a lot new members don't realize that it can be a stepping stone to bigger and better things.
Cody, your an inspiration and a true credit to the fire service and forest firefighting in general. I hope your teaching your young Firefighters in your area all your knowledge, because brother, you have a plethora.

You are 100% correct on volunteering! What IF volunteer firefighters didn't volunteer? What IF the minutemen over 200 years ago didn't volunteer?!?!?
So many people nowadays do NOT want to give of their time and energy. I was in volunteer firefighting for over 15 years here in East Texas and we always struggled to get volunteer firefighters. I moved up the ranks to fire chief and I loved it. I didn't love dealing with folks who would get mad because we didn't have enough firefighters to save the a property, whether a hayfield or a house and that's WITH mutual aid.
Sadly, we had to close the doors to our V.F.D. due to a total lack of volunteers. We had plenty of money, we had lots of new gear and equipment...just no people. Not only did our station close, but also another nearby station in a district near mine in the same county. That's two volunteer fire departments in our county closing in the same year!!!! That's just plain sad.
I congratulate you on your volunteering and your dedication to the job. The only difference between your truck and mine was that I had a stack of mobile radios mounted inside mine. Being a firefighter AND a ham radio operator I had a lot of comms in my truck along with gear just like you. Keep up the good work and be safe out there.

Cody..I applaud your set-up. I know that you're a fire fighter, and you have to have all that extra gear. I run a smaller version...a triage first-aid kit, 2 gals. water in 1 qt bottles, 5 lb. extinguisher, heavy tow straps'n'chains, 10 ton hyd. jack, small shovel and a mini Pulaski...plus the heavy duty jumpers...a GPS, and CB radio.
Some think I've gone a little too far. Thanks for sharing.
I have gotten into the habit of when working on my vehicles that the specific tools I use go into a toolbox for that vehicle only. It has left me with several partial socket sets and such but complete tool sets in the vehicle itself. When vehicles get changed out so do the tools. This way I have the sockets, wrenches, pliers and such I need only for that vehicle. No need to carry 5 times the tools and only use a few that way. So far works really well for me and the family.

I have a Protech box. I had mine sprayed inside with Linex bed liner to eliminate the aluminum oxide that gets all over anything you put in an unlined box.
Great set up on the truck Cody. Something you might consider if you can find one inexpensively is a Port-a-Power hydraulic set. They are commonly used by auto body shops but with the attachments they have they make a great rescue tool. They are very compact as well. I used one a lot in the shop and they work very well.

Cody great video. As a former captain of a local volunteer fire department, I love your truck setup. For us, we are not so rural, and our local policy is to respond with an engine. In your case, it does make sense. My truck always carried my gear, flash lights, radios, etc. Your structural gear is in your red bag in the truck. When you get out of brush fire season, do you leave your bunker pants/boots out to get in them before driving to the station/scene? I found it much quicker to put that on before driving to the station. It saved me time and energy. Just my two cents on structural. Thanks for sharing.

I like the velcro ammo carriers for your shot gun.
I know this is a older video I keep a High Lift First Responder jack in my truck and a cordless sawzall along with a 2 1/2 pressurized water can with some Dawn dish soap. I have had to use them all on occasion. Winter time the PW is next to the door for grab and go.

I'd like to maybe see a video, or at least some talking about the different radios you use. Radio communications have always been interesting to me, and having a proper radio setup can help in a lot of situations.

Great tips
You need to get a solar panel to plug into truck to keep the battery topped off from using the charger. It will also help in the winter to make sure truck will start. A lot of the little panels can plug right into socket with no problem they are low power though. If you only have 1 socket it will take a splitter . You could even consider bigger panel that would be wired directly to the battery. This would be good insurance that your battery is ready to go if you aren't running the truck everyday.

I agree Cody there isn't enough resources...I wish or city would allow volunteer fire fighters to help out when they are stretch thin fighting the multiple brush fires in uor area ( E. Washington).
Whether or not your a firefighter/EMT/first responder, you should always carry some essentials in your vehicle for emergencies. Being prepared and ready can mean precious time given.
Nice set up. It's best to keep binoculars in the glove box or the console. Heat damages lenses..

I'm not farmiliar with rural situations, but having some Hi-vis vest(s), (LED) road flares, traffic cones and such can really improve safety on a traffic accident scene.

Good video Cody. Is this a dedicated first responder truck for you? What I mean is, if you don't need the backseats for people, why don't you take them out and build a toolbox to fit in there. Or maybe you can make the seats themselves into toolboxes. Just like those storage ottomans for houses. Just figure out a way to get the seat part to lift up and fold back down so that you can store stuff in them.

I know what you are saying about low numbers with volunteers because our department is lucky to have 2 trucks roll off the floor during the day no matter what the call is but it isn't much better in the evening

Thank you for your work as a fire fighter. I can't believe the Government spends a million dollars a minute and doesn't pay you guys. I'm surprised firemen like you don't get a salary + hourly pay + tool stipend + take home vehicle for emergency response. I'd be more than happy to pay my fair share of taxes for that.
Personally, I would get our engine if there was extrication due to it having extrication gear (hydraulics, cribbing, etc.) It also has more EMS stuff such as back boards, o2 and c-collars. But I'm also a lot closer to our station.
