Penny is a teacher and leader for a dance group for adults with special needs, passionate and ready to defend the importance of her work when needed. At home, too, she's utterly devoted to her son Jamie, who also has special needs.
Yet struggling in both her external world and her private life has begun to wear on Penny. When she comes home after one tough day at work and discovers her husband Craig has forgotten to help with some housework, she finds herself at the end of her tether -- yet still has to manage to unearth infinite reservoirs for Jamie.
Writer-director Joseph Johnson's deeply affecting dramatic short is a deeply intimate, compassionate evocation of a world many aren't privy to, especially in such an emotionally intimate way. Following the central role of the caregiver, the sensitive, empathetic storytelling goes deep, exploring what it means to be a parent and a person living with and around disability, and creating a memorable family portrait with unparalleled emotional range.
The drama here is found in the everyday difficulties of Penny as they unfold the course of an ordinary day. She starts the film in a state of crisis -- she is losing the venue where her dance group performs -- and she carries that into her home, where she also discovers that she must carry a heavier load. The structure of the narrative from public to private isn't meant to show the different faces of Penny, but rather how all sectors of her life pull at her, with little room for relief and respite.
The portrayal of the mother-son relationship is the crux of the film, and it is deeply affecting, full of love and devotion but honest about the toll it can take on a person already stretched to their limit. Adjoa Andoh as Penny is absolutely compelling with every moment on screen, and every word, gesture and look conveys both her fierce unconditional love, her conviction and also her frustration. She is a giver by profession and at home, but it is only deeply human that her tank begins to empty.
Actor Edward Bluemel -- now appearing on the smash TV series Killing Eve -- offers a sensitive portrayal of Jamie, embodying the needs, longings and responses of a young man who can feel and understand so much despite his so-called limitations. The rapport between Andoh and Bluemel as mother and son is both heartwarming in its tenderness, and heartwrenching in its struggles.
The arc of HOUSE FINCH is less about answering a narrative question but rather the internal letting-go that Penny must do to balance all the pieces in her life, the most important of which is Jamie. Around this subtle emotional shift, though, the film weaves a profound portrait of parental love in even the most challenging of situations. We won't say this love been made richer or more resonant because of that struggle -- most parents know that the love for their children goes deeper than anything -- but its struggles and joys may exist in sharper relief, making for a kaleidoscopic, even radiant range of emotion and a poignancy that lingers well after the story ends.
As the mother of an autistic son, the scene where Jamie is shunned by the neighbor and her son is ever so heartbreaking.

Did you ever have a group of neighbors "intervention" you? I was invited for tea not knowing the reason for the get-together was "my son's behavior" scaring the neighbor kids and their parents. So I was told to keep my son inside unless I was watching him. Inside my own back garden, no less, because their kids visited the other family living in the duplex and the gardens were shared. Ouch, bad memory.
I think it was more the mother.
I could really relate to how tried Penny felt. 26 year ago, I married a man with Asperger's. In one way, he have a very normal life with a good paying job for 25 years now. In another way, everything else one can think of is up to me. It gets very exhausting to caring for all another's needs and have no support from anyone else. The support I would get from... well a husband, that's not possible for him. I get depressed often, and just feel so overwhelmed at times it's hard to move. I love him, but loving is not all wine and roses in any marriage.

In the late 70's I heard of a boy that was in kindergarten. He was unfocused, awkward, and had a problem with one of his eyes. Through elementary school he was told repeatedly by his teachers he wouldn't amount to anything and was even put in the back of a class behind a partition in grade 4. He was picked on and was a bit different. In HS he suffered another devastating blow when his father passed at age 43 after a 7 month cancer battle. However he had a desire to not give up. Though difficult he went on and continued his education ultimately completing a graduate degree in 2000 after so many said he couldn't. Last I had heard he now works with others in schools who need extra support. In fact I know he does because that is my career and the boy was me. People who have a disability whether physical, mental, developmental, etc will face challenges and may be told horrible things by the world but many have dreams and aspirations.

My husband has Aspergers and my son has Autism. There are overwhelming amounts of love, unconditional, but that doesn’t mean the exhaustion and fatigue don’t get to me.... I can relate to Penny.
Was her husband also autistic in this film? , i got the impression it was just the son. But i noticed the husband kept trying to stay busy by doing random things like fixing clocks, so maybe he had a condition aswell.

This boy is either really autistic or he is a very good actor. You really get what he and his mom are going through. At 7:05 you can see the frustration in his face when his mom tied his shoe lace when he was trying to do it himself. Despite his condition he needs a little independence, and his mom is tired of always catering to him hand and foot, but her love for him keeps her going.

I guess it's the metaphor for a happy past that's not coming back, but the mother is embracing the present and what the future holds for her son and the whole family.

Everyone doesn't have a care-taking and compassionate nature. Children and adults with special needs require extra love and care; often left-up to their mothers, while their dads become distant. Lessen the burden of care on your partner, it's a labor of love. God will bless you in many ways. There is no room for selfishness; or feeling shame and disappointment in a child born with disabilities. They need and deserve everyone's love to survive.

God this kinda of topic always puts me in tears, and people always tell me to stop watching then if they make you cry but i like crying to them. It feels good too, cause its ment to be sad, to make you fell how they do, to see what they go through every day, and i feel so thankfull for the way i am now, and how other people have come out.

Cuz it was his son's who she lost because of some kind of inability and then she adopted this guy as his son and he later motivated her to do the charity job that she does.
But in the end she finally decided to let go and move on.
The dance in the beginning was beautiful...but the dance at the end was magical. 💕

Me too. I have an adult brother with autism and he's unlike any other person in this world. Honest to a fault, difficult as can be at times if his schedule is interupted..but he's so unique and wonderful. People like us, who grow up with a disabled sibling, tend to be a little more sensitive, and are much less likely to be bullies. I think I probably felt much like you did watching this. Be well.
There is nothing more insulting to a parent of a severely disabled child than to hear someone make an excuse and try to deflect by saying "I have a cousin with X". It's like someone that is racist saying "I have a black friend".

After watching these videos and reading some of the comments I can see that most people here all take these videos and actually get the meanings behind them
I have 3 children with special needs...it's very hardwork and challenging but it's worth it when they give you a smile and a hug
I have a nine year old with special needs also epileptic, things seems to get harder as he gets older, things have not been easy I had to quit my job to care for him 24/7 having to take him to therapy 5 times a week plus doing the exercises at home is exhausted, but besides this I have learned so much from him have become a stronger person, more compassionate, more patient, not only towards my son but with others. And seeing a smile and getting hugs is all worthwhile 🙏🙏🙏has help a lot too
The grating parts for me in this movie were the building manager carping on about costs and cutbacks and how he knows someone with Asperger etc and the scene in the garden when the lad approaches the boy with the football and a worried mother scoops him away concerned that the boy's disability would 'sully' him. The finale saddened me, the mum was letting go of the 'little, vulnerable boy' when she set light to his childhood clothing. There are still so many misconceptions, misunderstandings and plain ignorance circling spectrum conditions and other related neural conditions and health organisations which are heavily monitored by government purse strings sincerely don't help too much either plus the plethora of charity funded organisations which are supposed to know how to handle these cases do more harm than good. This story embodied my worst fears as someone who is on the spectrum.

The fact that the government and 'BigPharma' still don't want to admit their culpability in the explosion of nervous system damage done to human beings by poisons in our water and vaccines is insane. Your videos do more then just provide entertainment. They are powerful and provoke so much thought. Provoke so much hope in me that they are doing a small part to make the world better.
I have been binge watching your video for a week stright so far and I feel like I have become a better person just through the understandings of others and their plight. The one that stays with me most is "man tries to take his life in motel room" this one moved me (without spoiling too much for others) and helped me see sometimes I am that man in the room too wrapped up in myself.

This means a lot to me. I have a son who is autistic and can relate. Parents have to wear so many hats at a time and essentially lead a life of sacrifices.

Anyone who takes care of disabled people is a saint! This is so moving and so sad at the same time, but she also has a disabled husband. The woman must be totally exhausted.
It just seems ofttimes that we are becoming a more and more selfish world. There has to be a balance somewhere.

Edward Bluemel is so captivating
As the ideal of a perfect body and perfect soul gets pushed harder and harder by media, society becomes less and less inclusive of natural variations in humanity. With the advent of ultrasound scans during pregnancy and oftentimes termination of less than perfect humans the texture of society is becoming less rich. Two of my three children had “suspect” scans and termination was mentioned. I am an atheist through and through yet I believe all humans deserve a right to life and termination was never considered. Turns out there was nothing wrong with them at all. I would love them just as much if they were disabled.
I don’t know if that true. Back in the day many disabled people were sent away, left for dead etc. I mean look at the Kennedys the way they treated their different daughter. Things like that are much less likely in today’s world but maybe that is so because termination is on the table. If I was a doctor I would much rather someone terminate their child for whatever reason than to give birth to them just to treat them badly. Have you spent a lot of time with very disabled people? Not everyone has the patience to spend their whole life caring for someone who sometimes can’t care back. Could you give up your life taking care of someone who could never say I love you. Never hug you, never look you in the eyes. It takes a lot out of you. Don’t say such things so lightly.
Victoria Abbey . Yes sadly you are correct about society and human behaviour. My concern is who and how do we decide what is normal and acceptable. If in the future we could determine before birth if an individual had criminal or psychopathic tendencies, it would be good for society to eliminate that individual before birth. Save their family plenty of grief as well. Or obesity, crooked teeth, an IQ below an arbitrary set figure. The list goes on and on.

I don't know if I get it either. I watched it a couple more times. The clothes on the line are little boy clothes. There are no little boys in the house. So I think maybe they belonged to Jaimie when he was younger or maybe there was another child that passed away of some other disability. And the mother keeps washing these clothes along with all the other things she has to do and absolutely sacrificing herself. And in burning those clothes she is letting go of some of the responsibility and pressure she has taken upon herself as a mother and a wife and so on.

Daniele Cardoso I think it’s the moment the mother lets go of her son. She, as many mothers of disabled children do, has been one encapsulated in protecting him his whole life and holding onto his childhood.
