    Amazing how fast that altitude sickness comes on.....i went snowmibiling once at grand lake.....started feeling dizzy....sluggish...then my sight went out.....i had two back holes in front of my vision.....could only see the trees on sides of trail....my buddy picked up on it and we limped back down to 9000 feet....i layed by fireplace and drank a bunch of water....took about 3 hrs to recover.....i suspect mostly due to lack of lung capacity due to 9/11 didnt help my cause too much....another great video...thx coddiwomple✌

    Was there the last week of August this year and traffic was thick. It's mostly common sense. Uphill vehicles are supposed to have the right of way, but every situation has to be evaluated seperatly. Whoever is closest to a wide spot should get over and let oncoming traffic go by.
    We had a couple tight squeezes and had to back up once when we met a Power Wagon coming around a blind corner.
    Thanks for the memories!

    Altitude sickness in no joke. I was in Durango for five days. I spent four days on the alpine loop and I was sidelined on the fifth day due to altitude sickness. Flu like symptoms, shortness of breath and feeling dehydrated all the time(I was drinking over a gallon of water per day). The next time I visit the alpine loop. I will stay in the foothills for several days and let my body acclimatize, then spend several days above ten thousand feet. Also, as a Jeep Owner(2004 TJ I purchased in 2008) and a 4Runner owner(2019 TRD Pro). I was saddened by all the new Jeep owners that had no knowledge pertaining to trail etiquette. Even if you have the right away, with two Jeeps in your group, you seen a caravan of eight vehicles. Give them the right away. Being nice and showing compassion requires little energy, with a great reward. Safe travels, Y'all...

    • @CoddiwompleOverland
      @CoddiwompleOverland  2 года назад +2

      You are absolutely correct about altitude sickness. Glad that you didn't have any serious complications from it. We had been about 5000 or more feet for almost 3 weeks before this pass. We also agree about your take on trail etiquette. As you may have seen we backed into a wide spot going up as we had a better place to pull over than the down hill vehicles. The folks in the Jeeps were not new Jeep owners, they were actually people who thought it would be fun to take a Jeep to the mountains so they rented one for a few hours in town. I think it's great that people want to get out. That being said, I think the rental companies have a responsibility to educate their customers on trail etiquette prior to sending them to the mountains.

    You drove an oversized ranch-style pickup truck on a super narrow mountain pass trail? In a long group of several other vehicles? Then when you come to a spot that you can pass in two different directions, you just stop and stare? The vehicle in your group directly in front of you at the summit needlessly stopped? He could have easily kept going on the road or turned onto the summit ridge. The tour vehicles always briefly stop in that spot then move on. It's not blocking traffic in either direction. It looks like it was there first and parked in a spot which allowed passage both in front AND behind it. Keep in mind, those guys are up there every day. They are well experienced with how to work around other vehicles and user groups since it's literally their job. That ONE tour vehicle brought ten people to the summit. How many vehicles did your group have for ten people? Honestly, it was more inconsiderate of you for traveling in a long string of vehicles on such a tight trail. It's the loosely organized group rides (of mostly solo drivers) that make the biggest impact and cause the bottlenecks up there, not the single vehicles that are carpooling and stopped out of the path of travel.

    • @tabskaggs5162
      @tabskaggs5162 2 года назад +3

      If you would watch the video, you would see that they were only a group of three. They traveled a long way to see the passes and the beauty of Colorado, in my opinion they had just as much right as the tour groups and rentals to stop and take in the scenery.

    • @kellypw8186
      @kellypw8186 2 года назад +1

      Herb, you obviously have a personal involvement with commercial vehicle traffic on the pass that's coloring your opinion.
      The truth is that of the 10's of thousands of trial miles we've covered across the country, the heavy rental and commercial traffic on the Telluride side of Imogene makes it less enjoyable. We're far from the first to point this out and the video accurately portrays the reality of our experience on the road that day. It just is what it is...
      Now, more specifically, the truck at the summit WAS blocking traffic. It's right there on video. No one could move. Had the driver folded in his aluminum ladder and closed the tail gate we could have passed... but he didn't. Left it deployed the whole time he was parked. THAT lazy and inconsiderate action is what was blocking passage to his rear. That's 4 or 5 extra feet of obstruction behind him he could have simply eliminated but chose not to. 30 seconds of effort on his part could have eliminated the whole mess.
      Lastly, calling a Power Wagon a "ranch type vehicle" is cute...

    • @CoddiwompleOverland

      Herb, The "oversized ranch-style pickup" wheel track is no wider than our JKU. Our "LONG" group of several vehicles consisted of 2 Jeeps and a Power Wagon. The lead Jeep , which was me stopped to see how best to make our way on to the summit parking area. Had your staff, yes we know that you are the owner of Telluride Offroad Adventures parked inline with the ridge it would have given ample room. Instead he parked right at the sign with his tailgate and steps down. The area in front of his vehicle was very off camber as evidenced by the motorcycle rider almost loosing it. Behind the tour truck was also off camber and narrow. There was not enough room for us to turn in around your vehicle so I chose to pull up and back in around it. One of your customers even said to us as we went by " wow that is scary being right on the edge like that" as the Power Wagon went by a customer was heard asking your staff if he should move out of the way when your staff replied "You all paid for 3 minutes each at the sign and that is what you are going to get." All of this could have been avoided by parking your vehicle at a 90 degree angle to what it was or simply moving down a little farther on the ridge. In my opinion the manner of parking was just lazy and inconsiderate of others. I have no issue with a tour vehicle "briefly stopping" This one had NOT briefly stopped.... It had been there for the better part of an hour causing other people problems that were on the ridge trying to leave. I understand that your one vehicle brought 10 people to the summit but my questions is how many time's did that one vehicle make the trip up the mountain that day? And then how many days in that month did you do this many trips in a day? Your staff may be experienced in how to work around other vehicles but in this case they failed to do so.

  • @GATORADDAM
    @GATORADDAM 2 года назад

    I'm sorry, I usually enjoy your videos. But with all that complaining and whinnin' this one isn't it!
    I did the pass a month before you this year. I had no such issues. Why? Because I didn't have a Jeep with wheels so offset that my track is a foot wider then normal. And I damn sure didn't take a Power Wagon on a 2 way shelf road! I took my lifted Tacoma with 33 inch tires inside the wheel wells, nice and narrow so I could pass.. I would simply have driven around the tour truck.
    I also didn't suffer from lack of oxygen because I acclimated, and I live 64 ft above sea level in Florida!
    Perhaps your group is better suited for the easier, and less traveled trails in Georgia, Tennessee and such.

      I appreciate your insight and opinion. You drive what you choose and we will drive what we like. I guess its ok for you to jump on here and voice your opinion and pass judgment but its not ok for us to state our opinion in our video.
      We had been at altitude for several days. It just happened to catch up with Kelly. It could happened to anyone.
      Maybe we are just better suited for less popular trails. Which is what we explained in the video.
      To imply that our group is not fit, capable or worthy of overlanding anywhere other than the east is quite frankly an insult. I used to be very appreciative of your comments, but this one I am not.....

    • @kellypw8186
      @kellypw8186 2 года назад +2

      We did lots of two way shelf roads on this trip. This was the only one that was annoying. There is not a darn thing technical about Imogene. But the crowding and commercial traffic is off-putting. There are a lot of trail options in that region that don't have the congestion of Imogene. We liked them better.
      You're right in that our group is more at home away from bustling tourist traps. To each their own.
      As for you not getting hypoxic at 12k feet, weird flex dude. But OK.
      I didn't the dozen or so other times we were that high either. I did that time. There's actually quite a bit of medical training in our group. Like, a lot. Something that wasn't mentioned in the video was that my hypoxia could have been secondary to HACE. The ataxia and AMS point that way. We didn't worry too much on a differential between that and primary hypoxia because the treatment for both is the same. Oxygen and decent. As far as acclimation, HACE becomes more common the LONGER you are at elevation. We had been sleeping pretty high off and on for weeks at that point. I'm going to guess you don't have a stitch of medical training do you? The simple fact is, I was severely hypoxic, it was identified and corrected. Why you feel the need to criticize that is.... bizarre.
      Sticking to easier trails...
      I keep trying to get Coddiwomple to host an "I would have just" outing on Lockhart, Potts Mtn. or the like so folks could come show us how it's done.... Alas, every time we try people get "busy". Too bad.
      Would love to see vids of you doing some "hard" stuff. Got any links?

    • @GATORADDAM
      @GATORADDAM 2 года назад

      @@kellypw8186
      By easier trails I meant basically less traveled. Easier as far as traffic goes.
      I don't do "hard stuff". I'm an overlander not a rock crawler.
      I did all the passes out there including Black Bear for the second time. No, they're not the Rubicon, nor would I care to do a trail like the Rubicon with little to see and much to beat up your vehicle.
      My gripe was not the difficulty aspect, it was all the complaining in the video. When you take an extra large vehicle on a narrow, heavily traveled 2 way road you can't complain about tough passing conditions. The other folks can, not you! Patience is a must on these excursions. If you're in a hurry you're doing the wrong activity.
      I do agree that the tour companies are completely out of hand. That said; I stopped and spoke to many of the drivers and they were friendly and courteous for the most part. You have to take into consideration that they do this all the time. Can you imagine the idiots they have to deal with over the course of a few months?! Both customers and other trail runners.
      Slow down. Take it in. Go with the flow. Relax and don't ruin your otherwise great videos with complaining.
      I did Nemos tunnel in Tennessee as well earlier in the year. What would you have done if you encountered someone coming the other way at the halfway point? That would'a been a rant! Hahaha.

      @@GATORADDAM I grew up in the West, Northern California to be precise, and thought I was a better than average off roader. I rode motorcycle Enduros and logged many vehicle miles of backroads during my 40 years out west, When I moved to Kentucky, I learned that it was a completely different world of off roading. I had to re-learn how to ride and drive all over again. Out west you don't have the slick muddy/rocky conditions. The trails are nowhere near as tight. Most of the trails are wide open and you are able to see upcoming obstacles. Out here the rocks are all slimy and every turn is hidden. Y'all can claim the west is the best for Offroad trails and for pure panaramic beauty I would not argue, but if you want to challenge your rigs capabilities and driving skills come take a trip with us. You mentioned "By easier I meant Basically less traveled." That doesn't chive! Less traveled trails tend to be more difficult and are harder to access.
      I am interested as to how long it took you to get "Acclimated" because it takes a full 1-3 days to acclimated from sea level to 7500 plus feet. Also, I can't help but feel a Toyota basis within your comment. I am fairly new to "Overlanding", only been active for two years, but I can't help but notice the tension between Jeep and Toyota drivers. Mainly from the Toyota side. I have been on many trails and waved to all vehicles. Without exception, the Toyota community is the rudest and most unfriendly of the bunch. Please help me understand! We are all out on the trail enjoying nature and sharing a common experience why do the "tacos" act so strangely? In the words of that great American Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along".

    Instead of contacting our company, you posted this video blaming us for the traffic/congestion that you experienced on your trip? FYI, Our guides are the friendliest and most experienced people on the Jeep trails. We are proud of this. Just ask any local.
    We take pride in being low impact stewards of the resource. Our company regularly assists folks from all user groups who are in need. We also help fund the cost of maintaining our local trails through our heavy license/permit fees and volunteer trail maintenance.
    Posting hit-job videos blaming us for a busy day on the pass rather than contacting us is just weak sauce.

      T-ride offroad, no one blamed the rental Jeep and rental bike traffic on you.
      Your truck at the summit WAS obstructing traffic to the parking area. It's right there on video. He left his tailgate down and ladder deployed the whole time he was parked there. That was lazy, inconsiderate...and avoidable.
      Had he taken 30 seconds to close that until ready to re-load passengers, there would indeed have been room to pass behind him.
      To call this a hit piece is laughable. Your driver, on that trip, parked poorly and left his gear deployed blocking traffic. I'm sure your folks have run hundreds of trips up the pass where parking didn't cause traffic issues, this one did. Just own it...
      This video accurately show the traffic conditions on the road the day we were there. The heavy commercial traffic on the Telluride side of Imogene is a consideration and does impact the experience. This video is far from the first to show this. The Telluride area is very crowded and the pass reflects that. It's not hate, just the truth.

      Hello again Herb, I posted our video as a real world view of our experience as we do with everything on our channel. Our channel is meant to be information as well as entertaining. After reading your replies, i truly feel that we would have gotten the same, we are great and have more right to be there arrogant response had we made a phone call complaint. I am sure that your staff is friendly towards your customers as that is where they make their wage and tips. I am also sure that they are very experienced given as many times as your vehicles are on the trails daily, weekly and monthly. I'm not sure how multiple trips a day up and down the mountain in a heavy truck loaded with an additional 2000 pounds of tourists is considered low impact but everybody has to make a dollar somehow. I am sure that you don't pay the HEAVY license/permits fees to the federal government out of the goodness of your heart. You are required to pay this because of your HIGH impact while conducting business for profit off of a natural federal resource. This video was not a "hit-job video. It simply showed what it is really like on Imogene Pass. Your tour vehicle contributed to the problem, it is what it is.....

      There were several T-Ride off road vehicles on top of the pass. In all fairness, only one blocked the trail and acted with complete disregard . The others pull forward and off to the side, allowing all vehicles access to the summit. I was left on the trail with vehicles stacking up behind while the TOR Jeep blocked traffic in both directions. Very inconsiderate and dangerous.
      On a side note, a lot of the passengers of the Jeep blocking the trail seemed very uncomfortable with the situation and even apologized. Can’t imagine they signed up for that type of experience.
