The talk on this about day jobs/work versus what you really want to do I found profoundly relevant as I’m about to retire at Easter, aged 64. I’ve craved for so long the time to just spend on doing the things I want to do. I may not ever create anything worthwhile on my music gear but I’ll have great fun not doing it! On the other hand there’s a subtlety to this as I found recently for something I had to do at work, discovering and understanding how to use pivot tables and slicers in conjunction with formulas and data validation in Excel spreadsheets. The joy of it all actually working as intended is a really pleasing feeling and must be akin to creating a track that one is actually proud of. And I’d never have discovered this if not for my day job. I guess it goes to prove how complex and full of grey areas life is. x
This reminds me of my Dad a bit - he's not into music but went full on nerd mode with Excel around retirement age and I think he secretly still loves it! Best of luck with the retirement!
Picked up a copy of Four Thousand Weeks after the recommendation and as someone who has been feeling a little burnt out lately its turning out to be a refreshing and affecting read. Thanks Mr Melodies!
@@mylarmelodies it struck me on two levels - firstly relating to the day job but secondly the escapist part of life which for me is music. For the last year I've been telling myself I'm not doing enough and simultaneously not enjoying those things I have been, under the impression that grit and effort will pay off...add to that an amount of FOMO too. So it's nice to have a bigger voice offer a counter.
Very good episode, I loved the day job/creative business content. I switched from a corporate day job to running AMSynths full time 3 years ago, and I have had so much satisfaction from the electronic design, international procuerment, digital marketing, business planning, artwork, and of course, meeting customers ! A diverse set of skills to learn and use. I hope this video encouages more people to go creative. Are there any pictures of the Mylar Studio? Best Regards Rob
Yeah T-1 manual is way too long. Because they go deep into the basics of simple concepts it's impossible to find the actual important information for using the device.
In general, 3 hour long ‘let’s just hang out and talk’ podcasts are absolutely not my thing. This was not that, this was lovely through and through - a treat.
This has just seen me through a morning of working from home… An excellent episode and now, I’m going to seek out the previous ones with TW. Ace, cheers!
Excellent! I love Thonk, DIY, and MTM modules. Tom's surprising acknowledgement of not "completely" understanding electronics whilst still making brilliant devices has me pumped to tinker more and more. Cheers boys!
have to agree with this... inspiring 😊I am on the "whatever Emilie used, must be fine!" path and gradually learning how things actually work. Moritz Klein also great for this.
It's great to see Tom,.. if every episode is just old Tom I think i'd watch,.. even if you two just bumble around a fire with tea m8. Any chance you'll get Apex to invite you to a grocery store for a podcast? That would be,... well, probably nothing,.. cheers!
Can confirm the day after recording I picked up the mixer and the guy was lovely and I was not murderered - but stay safe out there chasin them deals folks
I just spent the weekend soldering up Tom's Spring Reverb, the Expander and Magnetophon (very slowly). For much of that time I was listening to the Surgeon & James Blake episodes - looking forward to this!
Every podcast with Tom is so phenomenal. What a inspiring conversation. Tom was such a poetical in explaining his new project, as well as explaining product design and simplicity of good products. Can't wait for the release. Btw. I had to google 'sabbatical' what a gorgeous niche thing for rich people to do :)
If anyone needs a new Radio Music check out the Sherpa Modular Raw Waves 2, which is Teensy 4. I've got it bookmarked in case my RM ever stops working! I think it's also available in a 1U version.

There is no wasted time, everything we do serve the only purpose of being creative

Thanks for this, ace. I think I’ve read it three times now… 🤪

great conversation, thanks 😊100% dad-joke award for the uli-phant in the room. 🤣
Fantastic. The episodes with Tom have always been my favorites. It’s been a minute since the last one…
Before even getting to the interview, I LOVE your approach to ads
Thanks!! Always take a while to write and perform and edit but they are a laugh 😂

The man who releases an album every day is Michiru Aoyama, and his albums are on Apple Music as well as Spotify.
Always fascinating listening when you visit Tom !

Great one! I enjoyed listening to this. Thanks!
Great interview, you takes your times, no frenetic montage, this simplicity and this naturalness is good, thanks you two !
Good chats. No "what is the future of music technology?" this time though? I always particularly enjoy that bit.
Ah well the Tom chats are an anomaly with different rules - and I think we’re sort of always discussing that to be fair!

Really enjoy your chats. Very interesting and informative.

I buy and sell on FBM a lot. I ask lots of questions before buying, specifically to rule out scams and reduce probability of being murdered. 😂❤

Super interesting stuff! :) And thanks for featuring my Noise book!
Thanks for this content Alex!
And, by the way, I completely agree with the fact that we need deadlines to achieve goals in a decent amount of time...
Interesting, relevant, engaging, easy to listen to 10/10!
So glad to be living in the Whitwellian era.
What a great chat!

Listening you with a glass of whisky made me think of creating a module based on some previous diy projects. Absolutely inspirational
Not sure if they have it on Mac but the Edge browser has Chat GPT built in and you can load up PDFs and ask questions of them for free.

Glorious! Was listening to the audio version of this on Patreon just yesterday. Now it’s time to _WATCH_ it. Ace.
Streets of Rage 2 OST banger!
I listened to it all. Inspiring conversation once again. Not seeing the sketches has left a small hole in my mind.
🙌 Ahh, they’re shown onscreen for a brief moment, check back! 🧐
Has Tom released any music? I'd like to listen to some if he has.
He’s got some things on Bandcamp under his own name
Could you ask him if he's going to do a teensy 4.* version of the chord/radio machine/prok drums?
I'd love to have the Radio Music / Prok on sale again, but I keep getting distracted by other things - sorry!

Love the streets or rage ost during the fm ad 😂
Can you imagine if I could get Yuzo Koshiro on a future episode
Yay! Loves me a Tom Whitwell interview!
Can someone please interview @mylarmelodies 😊
There are interviews out there - also: Why We Bleep Podcast 34 w/ Mylar Melodies & Music Thing
