This was highly helpful, Ty Emma! I went from a basic 6 color palette of watercolors that was a gift as a kid (& I think I tried it on regular multi purpose paper), that was frustrating bc I didn’t have any instructions on building layers. It seemed impossible to get a saturated color. Fast forward to retirement age and a frighteningly major hospitalization, and the feeling that I’d never create in any medium that I was doing previously (fiber arts and processing/spinning wools & silks, etc. Before that, pyrography and musical instruments from dried gourds), and then I stumbled across a handful of excellent artists, like you! 💜
From last Fall, I’ve treated myself to upgrading my wc from inexpensive pans, to DS tubes. Also better paper and brushes. I’m drawn to the wc and the gouache painting’s , I think bc that’s my focus right now, but they are all equally beautiful to my eye’s and look forward to trying them all in the future.
Apologies for the long comment here, but wanted to answer your question about which tutorials we’d like to see most…but I also wanted to let you know how much you have given to me in this hopeful time of returning to the creativity I crave! I can see a gouache set in my future too ;) Thank you for all you do sweet lady 👩🏼‍🎨🙏🌻

Hi Emma, They'll all beautiful, but I’m partial to watercolor as well. So that would be my choice if you do a more realistic version. As a FYI: Many of us don’t realize that there’s a water-based gouache and an acrylic-based gouache. Traditional gouache (water-based) is mixed with gum arabic, while acrylic gouache has an acrylic-based binder. Once dry, the acrylic gouache can’t be reactivated with water while the water-based gouache can. So when you use acrylic gouache you don’t want to place color in a palette or it will dry on you, but water-based gouache is like watercolor and can be reactivated with water and can be placed in a palette. Thanks for another amazing tutorial Emma! 😊💕

Wow - loved all of them - but Gouache was my favourite

  • @Stylvestre
    @Stylvestre 4 месяца назад +3

The gouache one has more range in values than the others. But it’s not the medium, it’s just that WC is definitely more time consuming to get that much of a range in value and it would also have required negative painting to get the level of details in the flowers.
As you’ve said, WC is much easier to deal with for not having to stay put for a long period of time (single mom of 3 boys here 2, 4 and 6 so yeah… team WC!!! 😂)
The Gouache is also much more of an illustrative style and seems flatter, cartoonish, poster-ish. WC can have so much more texture to it compared to gouache.
    wonderful comparison Emma Jane!

I like the Gouache picture the best, it has more detail and depth to it. I've never used Acrylics, but because of the fussiness of them, I'm not interested in trying them out. I have the Caran d'ache Gouache pallet and a 5-tube set of Holbein Gouache to play around with. I like the vivid, opaqueness of Gouache. It's probably why I tend to not water down my watercolor paints enough, I like the more opaque look.

I’m just starting with watercolour. I’ve watched several other artist but I really gravitated to you. I love the hydrangea video and would love to see it done in a watercolour version. I must say I do love the saturation of the wash. I have been painting in acrylic for a number of years and about a year with water based oils. I like the no fuss/mess of watercolour. Thank you for sharing your talent.

Hi, I love the watercolor painting. I’m just partial to the look. I’m slowly beginning to like working with gouache, but not a true fan yet. You’re right about acrylic… learned to paint with the medium… but watercolor is my go to because you can create so many effects. Thanks for today’s tutorial. Oh, and any slower version is good by me. Just love your teaching. ❤

I really enjoyed seeing the same painting done in different mediums. I started with oil paints but didn’t like the smell or having to use a solvent so switched to acrylics. I struggled because it dried too quickly and had difficulty blending before it dried. I had always thought watercolor was a more difficult medium to learn, but tried it and fell in love with it. I love the same things about it that you do. I recently bought primary colors in gouache but trying to figure it out. I love all the paintings here but the gouache one sticks out for me. I would love to see more gouache paintings. Thank you Emma for another great video.

I agree with you 1000% about acrylic. It’s a mess, and even while wearing long-sleeved smocks, I’ve ruined a bunch of clothes. I mainly use gouache to fix watercolor mistakes. When I’ve used it alone the results always appear chalky, even with top grade brands of paint. Watercolor is my favorite medium to work in, bc of its luminosity and immediacy. There’s something wild and raw -poetic? - about it. Even after mastering water control, you’re always walking a tightrope in a way, bc it’s water, and I love that. Thanks for all your wonderful videos, Emma.

They are all beautiful, Emma. You make it look so easy, lol. I am nowhere near your level and still a newbie, but I love the results I get with digital art first, acrylic second, gouache third, and watercolor last. I LOVE watercolor the most because it's easy to clean up and easy to take out and about, and I use it the most, not counting digital, but still get the worst results with it. I finally ordered some cotton paper to see if it will make it easier for me but haven't used it yet as I feel I"m not good enough yet for the expensive paper, lol.

Hey Emma. I was waiting for this video ever since you teased it on instagram. I love the comparison of the different mediums. Although I am a watercolor junkie, I found myself liking the gouache the most here because of the detail and depth you got with the petals. The little pop of light green/yellow made it for me. If you want to explore acrylic more, you can make it last longer by spritzing it with water, maybe every 10-15 minutes, using a spray bottle. Sta-wet palettes also help. I have covered my palette with cling wrap and used it the next day. I also use disposable palettes for clean up. Just allow the leftover paint to dry on the palette and toss. No paints down the drain.
I also use watercolor, and it is more convenient cleanup. The above tips I’ve learned from other acrylic artists, and they help a lot!

Wow! All the paintings looked fabulous with the different media you used! But Watercolor it is! And then gouache! Acrylic No! No! I agree with you how messy of a medium it is to clean up after. And watercolor is so beautiful and transparent and makes the paintings look so airy! Your tutorials are so amazing to follow and give so much inspiration! Wish I could paint as easily as you do! But I know! It takes practice, which is my main weakness! But I enjoy every tutorial you put out there and do not miss on any! Thank you for all your efforts! Its funny you mentioned getting away from acrylics because of the fact that the paints dry up quickly and can't be revived with water. Thats the reason I have abandoned them too. Between working, grandchild care and a busy volunteer and social life, I was frustrated I couldn't simply take up where I left off. I always loved the way watercolor paintings looked and decided to give it a try a year ago and haven't looked back. I use a little white gouache from time to time but maybe will consider using more. I’m new to watercolor. 30+ years of acrylic and gouache. I use Jo Sonja brand paint that was labeled gouache for 20 or so years then velvet matte acrylics and now professional artist paints. They are tube paints and can be reactivated by water to a degree. To solve the waste of paint issue we just use a stay-wet palette. Simply pop the cover on and your paint can last months. Just go back every week or so and add some water to the sponge underneath the palette paper. Easy peasy. Before all of you start hating me, I am learning to use watercolors.

Have you tried using a wet palette for acrylics? The paints will stay workable for days.
I'd love to see a sneaker painting video.

I love the color variation you got from the gouache, and I’d love to see more from you in that medium!
Also, using a stay-wet palette has been a game changer for acrylic and gouache . Just pop the lid on when you need to walk away and the paint stays workable.

PS Caran D'Ache has a pan set of gouache paints. They are not the jellied kind. I love them. I got them on Amazon

I never tried acrylics (except of course for a few POSCA markers I own and eventually use for highlighting and details). Watercolors and gouache are really my gems. Watercolor mostly because of its transparency, and the fact that it’s so portable. I prefere using half pans. Being able to reactivate the paints once they’re left on the palette is a must for me, and I don’t even have kids 😂.
I really do not intend trying acrylics anytime soon, but I’d really like to know if there is a specific kind of acrylic paint, like fluid or soft body (I don’t know 😅) to be used on paper instead of canvases.

Hullo Emma, I am a watercolorist. I worked as a studio artist in a design firm that did a lot of advertising and we used gouache. It photographed the best, yet I don’t have any work from those times as everything is tossed into the trash after the photos are taken! Company policy for those times was quite harsh! Today everything is on the computer and easily stored! I have trouble thinking of gouache as a fine art medium. It was NOT considered one when I was using it! I am even more curious about acrylic-gouache a supposedly “new” medium. I wonder if you have tried it? I will always pick watercolor videos, but please feel free to branch out and try something new or newer to you for more excitement! I am sure your audience will watch!

I started with acrylics, but once I started using watercolors, I was in love! After about a year of mostly watercolor, I had to reteach myself acrylics, but it never felt right again. I never felt like I could get the blends and things I wanted.

Hey Emma Jane, do you have to use different brushes for each paint? I love watercolors. I use the most but i want to try quache one day. Before i had kids i used acrylic and made very big paintings. That I don’t like anymore. Now i am painting in my journal. Love that. ❤❤❤ thanks for the video. 😊

I use a plastic container (of 1 liter of ice), I put the acrylic paint on the lid, and when I stop, I put the lid on the container. This way I can use the same paint for days without it drying out. maybe spray something wet. By the way, I love the black and with ❤ . I use inkt and watercolor. maybe you could try that to.

I love all three mediums but don't paint with acrylic if I don't have a lot of time. Cleaning the brushes right away is more of an issue for me. The stay wet palettes work well to keep the paint viable but you cannot leave those darn brushes. All three of your painting were just lovely. I wish I could get my leaves to look better. That is where I could use a more in depth lesson.
