I just want to say thank you you definitely help with the motivation to stick with it I had experienced a horrible lost in my trees and all my trees and all my spare parts and everything stolen my whole collection but I started over and I have several new ones
Thanks for the video Nigel. It will be interesting for you to create a copy of another tree, and for all your viewers to see it too. It is always nice to watch you working on your trees; you pay so much attention to detail!
Great stuff! Keep up the awesome videos! Your dedication to the hobby as well as the quality of your videos and your apparent passion are all very inspiring
Great intro, i have to say , you are very true with everything you do. I admire your dedication and willingness to show others the way you do you. Been watching for a little over a year, read lots of books on plants, and am always amazed by the woods of B.C.
Dear Nigel, I have the same drill and I will be visiting Wellesley Is, N.Y in about a month. I have been going there to the Thousand Islands since a babe and have the last three generations that have also done so. There in those Islands are a large amount of such beautiful cedars and junipers that are centuries old. They live on rock and river water through heat, ice, wind, and rain. I may just grab a pure sample of such specimens as yamadori. I thoroughly enjoy your videos, design, artistry, and insight. I’ve just started my bonsai journey a mere week ago but have learned many things from you thus far. Cheers, Daniel
marios charalambous he is also a huge influence on me. These videos have helped me through quite a few first. First styling first winter first repot. Nigel is truly an asset to the community
I love using and collecting those beautiful tools from the good old days! I have a nice set of Millers Falls planes also. I used them to make three violins.
Hi M. Saunders, il very like the idea of a tree spirit. I will find one in the forest around my house and work on it. A question : i want to find the beautiful and inspiration music of Jo San and I dont find the référence of it in internet . Where I can find this music ? Thank you for your help ! Suzanne B. P. of Qc.
Sadly my cedar tree died after I repotted. I did not do any foliage pruning, because I didn't want to do too much work to it at once. I used 1:1:1 DE/Lava/Pumice. I am not sure what I did wrong. I didn't do much root pruning, but did wash them out like you did. Might you have any suggestions of what I might have done wrong? I was reading that cedar needs mycorrhiza in the soil. I fear bare rooting and new soil would remove the mycorrhiza. After watching this, you did the same, except you did foliage pruning as well. Is that where I went wrong perhaps? Thanks.
Hi nigel i do have a question..i noticed that in some of my pots especially in a polystyren training pot for my hornbeam bonsai, there are some little coloured balls,i am not sure but I think they are working with the mychorize system...what do you think?(the tree is very healthy and it is a yamadori,so i don't think that it is a problem)
It is possible that they are root nematodes.... here is an article aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/galveston/weekly_Q&A/h&v_6.htm They could also be fertilizer balls mixed in with the soil.
Hi Nigel, thanks for this amazingly beautiful video.Beginning is so peaceful..knowing about an old tree is like knowing an old sage. You styled your tree very well. Love your videos. I have a cider tree in a pot, almost 20 years old n 8 feet of height.Earlier I didn't think of it n let it grow. Now I have been thinking of styling it as a bonsai for many years but my heart refuses to chop it! Now suggest me if I can make a large bonsai or can I air layer it or can I grow the chopped stem in rains? I am not sure whether I'm asking sensible questions!!Still expect answers. Thanks n Regards
Nigel I have a question :) I am in the UK and found an ornamental Californian redwood tree in my local park. what's the best way to take cuttings from this type of tree? I tried taking cuttings from Scott a pine but only 10% survived. (mainly 3inch small cuttings)
Here is a good RUclips video on hardwood cuttings, i haven't tried many myself, but I'll have to give it a go! ruclips.net/video/R4NA4QUXQHM/видео.html
hey Nigel i really love your videos, and i do enjoy bonsai. its just i cant find much helpfull vedios on how torevive a dying bonsai such as a juniper. i think it was attaked by spider mites and i didnt identify it on time, can to peas make a video on something ike what i just said
It is difficult to keep a sick tree alive, all you can do is give it good care and keep it in a bright spot, away from the direct afternoon sun. Misting the foliage can help also.
I’m just beginning my Bonsai journey in earnest- Could someone please share his “usual” Bonsai soil mix components / ratio I have half a dozen trees I’ve been growing for 3~4 years in their nursery pots and I’m ready to do my first repotting just like for this little spirit tree project. I’d like to “make my own” soil and have it on hand - Any advice / soil recommendations etc are most welcome Also, I’m in the market for very good quality tools that I can grow into- I only want carbon steel though. Thank you in advance! 🙇🏻
Hi, I follow you for few years and it's awesome work you do :) I got a new Japanese black pine, I have a question and example and I hope you would help me a little If you want? How I could send you some pictures from the tree? I really hope that you help me with it.. :)
Hi nigel, im writing to you cause im begging for your advice, long story short, I have a ficus retusa that I placed inside an aquarium to get some aerial roots and this is going pretty well. Already have 5 or 6 roots connect to the ground. But now I have a problem, the soil of my bonsai is really really wet cause of the high humidity and im now concerned that my roots could get rotten with the time, I think I should get some bonsai soil, my soil is regulare repoting soil ( provably not the best for bonsai). What do you think of my situation? Sorry for my english, im a french canadian. Nice video as always by the way.
Green Soldier J'utilise de la perlite et du qualisorb acheté chez canadian tire 50/50, tamisée préalablement et j'obtiens d'excellent résultat. Le terreau est en effet pas l'idéal dans ces conditions.
Potting soil holds on to too much moisture, and can become compacted. Too much moisture can cause root rot, and compacted soil will limit oxygen availability for the roots. Both can be fatal.
Hi Nigel. I don‘t think there is a chance the inverse taper will disappear growing in this small pot, at all. Honestly. Put the tree in the Garden and let it grow. Maybe sometime It will become a good Bonsai candidate.
3 years my bonsai friend that's the first time I can recall you putting wire on one of your trees
Thank you for your time and information
I was going to say that and that's me saying it after 3 more years lol
I just want to say thank you you definitely help with the motivation to stick with it I had experienced a horrible lost in my trees and all my trees and all my spare parts and everything stolen my whole collection but I started over and I have several new ones
I will admit that I don't always like what you do to trees......but this time I have to say that this is excellent!
Thanks for the video Nigel. It will be interesting for you to create a copy of another tree, and for all your viewers to see it too. It is always nice to watch you working on your trees; you pay so much attention to detail!

Absolutely love your videos Nigel, they're quickly giving me the knowledge and confidence to start my own Bonsai soon enough!
marios charalambous he is also a huge influence on me. These videos have helped me through quite a few first. First styling first winter first repot. Nigel is truly an asset to the community
nice job it's gonna look awesome when it's finally finished love the camera work it brings the plant to life
Cool project ! very nice looking cedar and looking forward for updates. I also liked the use of the hand drill on that nice looking pot.
Great intro, Nigel. Learned something that I didn't know. Liked what you did with the first tree. Always enjoy your videos. Well done.
All in unison - "Beautiful" - to the Miller Falls drill ... it really is!
I love using and collecting those beautiful tools from the good old days! I have a nice set of Millers Falls planes also. I used them to make three violins.
I enjoy your videos. Thank you!
What a coincidence, the base of your tree resembles the base of of the big spirit tree. Nice work Nigel.
Nice tree lwith lots of character for such a small one ☝️
Thank you Brian!

That's a very nice tree! Keep up the great work!
Nice way of creating your own style motivated by nature. It also make bigginers think out of box and work.
Noce vedeo though.
This tree looks great already and will only improve. I bought a small potted cedar at the Superstore last fall , on sale for $7. I’m getting ideas...

Thank you Kennet! Hoping for rain soon, we've had a few weeks of sunny dry weather!
Amazing 👍

Thank you for all the help.

Awesome
It reminds me (although it looks larger) of the ancient white cedars growing on the cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment.
I see you mentioned Rattlesnake Point type trees.
I like this one a lot! Very rugged.
Tell us about your watering can. Plastic? How big and what brand?
Michael Foos It looks like a Haws. See Lee Valley or a fine garden centre.
Dave Chapman thanks, that's what I thought... Gotta move up to a larger size- either that or quit aquiring trees!
Hi Nigel, any update about lemon tree?
I notice that you didn't cut all the routs short, is there a reason for that or is it just your style? ... :)
I thought the exact same. I assume because he is eventually going to put it over a rock, he needs all the roots he can get
hey Nigel i really love your videos, and i do enjoy bonsai. its just i cant find much helpfull vedios on how torevive a dying bonsai such as a juniper. i think it was attaked by spider mites and i didnt identify it on time, can to peas make a video on something ike what i just said

thank you so much for the advise ill try to get it to do better. lets hope I can help it do better.
Why did you not put it right away on a rock put in a deeper pot? Just asking...
Hi Nigel can i get the files for the 3d bonsai vietnamese pots and stands thanks.

👍 on to the next.
Sounds like total immersion in the Bonsai Zone!
And we have tools like that just bigger at my mill
Can I make brugmansia bonsai?
Can you please try making a think herb garden
That would be a fun project! I'll keep it in mind!
I know you say what the soil is made of but my I ask why? Would I be fine using indoor potting mix for my tree, if not why not?
Potting soil holds on to too much moisture, and can become compacted. Too much moisture can cause root rot, and compacted soil will limit oxygen availability for the roots. Both can be fatal.
Can you please try to use an Australian paper bark tree
I'll see what I can do.
We need more drill screentime
💚💚💚💚
Foist here
Nigel, isn't this a cypress?
HerfordCityBeats, i think it's this one

try styling a cascade bonsai
Hi Nigel. I don‘t think there is a chance the inverse taper will disappear growing in this small pot, at all. Honestly. Put the tree in the Garden and let it grow. Maybe sometime It will become a good Bonsai candidate.
I think in this case the inverse taper actually adds to the character of the tree and is fine.
Was wondering what type of thuga now I know lol
These little trees have grown well over the summer, I'm really looking forward to working on them into the future!
