- Can you get grants before you have 501c3 status? In this video I’m walking through allll the considerations to think about when you’re seeking grants before you have 501c3 tax-exempt status.
In my experience, most people who approach me with this question are looking for money to pay for their application fees and other startup costs and they think a grant will cover those items. In most circumstances, you’re not going to find a grant to cover those costs. It’s a much greater use of your time and efforts to gather a board to contribute to the organization to help with the startup. Listen to learn more about why I think that’s the best strategy.

The IRS likes to see less than 49% of people on the board related to each other or associated (e.g. in business together).
I hated the fiscal sponsorhip expetience. I wish I would have just used my money towards my non profit application fee
I can't really speak to it because I haven't worked with a fiscal sponsor, but in most circumstances, it seems better to just get the 501c3.

It could be that are offering assistance beyond the filing of the 1023 or 1023ez, but it does seem excessive.
