Alex, just so you know…Simon and Garfunkel are way better known than you might realise in many countries around the world and to different generations. They were around long before there was internet etc, people used radios and record players in those days …and attended live concerts…that’s how people consumed music back in the 60’s and seventies…there is no way we can ever know how many actually listened to their music every day…but they were extremely popular ….of course they’re not going to have the accumulated views on today’s platforms that artists have today. When I was young, their music was everywhere and it was taught in our schools, their lyrics were taught as poems to analyse… long after they were no longer performing regularly. And if people did not grow up with a wide range of eclectic music genres being played at home, and only consumed music shows like MTV , and other chart driven shows, etc they would not be aware of their existence. That does not mean they did not exist or were popular….its like with Forestella…until Gavin suggested , you were unaware of them,..they still existed, they still were popular, they still went viral, probably geo-blocked but still went viral globally, despite how algorithmically we are fed a narrow choice of what’s out there.
This is a 60 year old folk-rock genre song…with a message….S & G’S original acoustic version released in October 1964, and electric overdubbed version September 1965. Disturbed performing this song drew people’s attention to the lyrics too…the message still resonates., especially if you sing all the verses.
