Can't believe after about 8 years, one of the major flaws with these things bricking has been discovered! Hope this video blows up so people who own a bricked one become aware that they now have a fix for it!

It was because of this pipboy that I started building mine, the idea was to be affordable, beautiful and resistant. And with the series and its videos, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I really wanted to be able to see the animations on the pipboy screen from the series because I want to animate it to make a video and put it on my pipboy, as the cell phone I use doesn't support the Fallout 4 app.
I just brought my pip boy home from my parents house today and randomly looked up a fix for this and found this video posted 24 hours ago! I'm definitely getting mine fixed now!!! Thank you
I have waited so many years for this day FINALLY! So you're telling me after all this time that the way to fix the stupid boot loop problem was to replace the stupid Atmel chip? SERIOUSLY?! THAT WAS IT?! OMG... I'm trying this ASAP. I NEED this to work!
That's great I knew one day they would find a solution I didn't think it was a hardware problem though it makes sense you cheap out on a chip and it clogs up the works but if you just replace the jet boom that's him that's a great thanks congratulations everyone and to the person who discovered this solution A+ plus
I really want to share the news with you, I'm very happy with the result because the cardboard with hot glue is firm and you can make it the perfect size. When I finish it, I really wish I could send you photos because I really admire your work and I wanted to be recognized.
@YourGeekFix @YourGeekFix to be fair I don't believe my issue would have been fixed by this specifically, but it'd be far too much a pain to try now. Still, great progress on fixing some of these expensive paperweights
@@YourGeekFix Yay, thanks. I hope you end up making one. I'm kinda wary about trying this since I've never done this kind of soldering before, but if someone makes a tutorial I think I'd feel more confident.
The problem isn't the heat, it is the chip that is suppose to keep the device from starting if it senses a possible heat problem is burning out or failing. That means there is a chance you may need to do this more than once.
My issue seemed to be the CMOS battery needed to be replaced so it could dump some junk data, basically having the batter sit in the unit all these years used it up to the point the system could manually refresh itself. I'd like to know more about the issues with these and the people repairing them.
Interesting. I’ve been looking into my Bluetooth pip boy and attempted to replace the same chip however I’m continuing to have the same issue unfortunately.
Definitely not the easiest fix unfortunately. Its a bga chip which it would 100% need to be desoldered and soldered back in. Its a pretty advanced soldering method too. As you need a hot air station for it and alignment isnt always the easiest. 😅😅😅 I would definitely look into a heatsink to help with cooling if its overheating. Maybe potentially with proper heatsinks it could keep it from overheating and causing the bricked issues
Unfortunately no, I dunno if it could be used as such but I wish it was, the type B USB port on the bottom part of the cuff where it plugs into the charger base is obnoxiously large on the inside and prevents the foam from compressing particularly far. I might just plug it in and see if it charges, if so I can happily tear the regular charger port out ^.^
@@YourGeekFixI can confirm it is a dev port used for the BOS system. There are actually two USB ports on it and the micro is the charger (I'm not exactly sure how well it works, but it works for mine I think. Hard to tell since it's stuck in a boot loop). The USB-3 port (the blue one) is supposed to be read by your PC, but the problem is that computers are so new now that they don't know how to read it correctly. You have to have the correct BOS drivers just for it to read and it may not even read then because of a busted memory unit. You never really know what might be wrong with it. I'm just glad mine actually still turns on. Even if it's only the boot screen
@@YourGeekFix No, I don't think so. But many of the tiny wires that connected to the various knobs and buttons are severed and would need to be re-done. I also don't know if the screen can be re-connected.
Ok so I replaced my CMOS battery a week ago, its been keeping date / time since but i don't leave it on. Yesterday someone asked me for a pic of it working, and I accidently left it on. Came down this morning to find it completely dead. I purchased this about month and half ago from someone who was not able to get it to power up at all and it had been sitting for 3+ years. Hooked to wyze power bank, juiced it for a bit, but only response I could get was power light coming on, screen is black. FUCK opened it up, unhooked internal battery and connected to power bank, same result reconnected internal battery but removed CMOS, IT BOOTED UP FULLY AGAIN, Screen is back! Old CMOS battery rating (this is a battery i replaced on 06/04) - 2.92 v New CMOS battery rating - 3.15 v I think when it drained the internal battery, it somehow? tapped into CMOS but when that couldnt maintain it shut it down and the lowered voltage CMOS was preventing it from restarting / initializing.
@@YourGeekFix Okay, I sound the board and the screen that went with it, along with the speaker, battery (I know that can be replaced) and various bits and buttons. I don't 100% know if I can put it all back together though.

Pretty straight forward. Pull out chip without bending pins. Put in new chip without bending pins.
@@YourGeekFix Are you sure? Someone else in the comments said it is a bga chip that needs a heat gun for desoldering/soldering.

Are there any videos online that help with replacing the chip, for those of us who are less technologically inclined 😅
I'll see if I can get one of the pipboys to show the process.
Ok if heat is the issue, I would suggest adding some passive cooling that CPU. Like the stuff you can get for Raspberry Pis.
The problem isn't the heat, it is the chip that is suppose to keep the device from starting if it senses a possible heat problem is burning out or failing. That means there is a chance you may need to do this more than once.
