    Merry Christmas! I was touched by the story at the end! I always learn something when I rewatch one of your videos. By doing many things that you taught me, I mostly remember it, but sometimes something important is missing. I'm sure when I first watched those videos I didn't pull out as many nuggets of truth as was possible, but with knowing more, I get the light bulb moments so much easier.
    I guess I'm in the camp where I don't need the deeper how to anymore, but to anyone thinking about paying for content with you, I did for a long period when I needed the help more! :) (and it's so worth it!)

    Hey Matt merry Christmas. A few days ago I watched both of your videos on fuel trims, and it was very informative and I made a diagnosis on a 2007 e63 amg. I was getting lean codes for both banks.. maf sensors were dirty, I cleaned them and it helped a bit however I have to get new ones. My LTFT on bank 1 was 39.3% and bank 2 was 57%...im not kidding... STFT was staying around zero, both banks of o2 sensors were at 0.45v. Cleaning them brought both banks of LTFT down to 21%..I unplugged both mafs, unfortunately the vehicle has 2 of them which doesn't make it cheap.. And LTFT and STFT went back to zero.

    I was burned hard by these recently. Had a Volvo come in with a single cylinder miss. Misfire under load so I brought out the scope and checked the current ramps on the single feed wire for all the coils with a 2nd channel on a random control wire. They all looked the exact same, good amps, everything, every cylinder was there. Looked like an idiot when I told my boss it can't be a coil. I've studied this a few years ago and thought I understood it until I came across it in the field. The funny thing about 3-4 wire coils is they're usually easier to get to, so I just end up swapping coils or using a test light. Job done in 5-10 minutes. This time I wanted to just use the scope only and it backfired on me, I forgot what I learned and honestly didn't know a good current ramp can still be a bad secondary on the coil itself. I turned a quick diag into a 3-4 hour ordeal over nothing.
    The best part is my boss is 65 and can't reliably diagnose a 2 wire bulb circuit and he "diagnosed" it right away based off symptoms as a coil. I brushed him off because he's never right and he wasn't really right in this case because that's not how you diagnose anyway. I knew it was most likely a coil, so what? It wasn't until I tested it that I got burned.
    Mistakes are the best teacher.

The first video of yours that I viewed caught my attention because of the wit you showcase when working on the 'Whiteboard of Knowledge'. You were probably talking fuel trims. • @justdata3650

    Your tutorials are excellent. I haven't seen your electrical series yet so if I'm duplicating an idea here then sorry. However, I would in addition to what people are learning from you suggest anyone who wants to really understand this to do a basic course in electronics (not electrical, must be electronics). Once you learn about resistors, capacitors, inductors (coils), diodes, and transistors (I hope I didn't miss anything - it's been a while) and how they are used in and react to both A.C. and D.C. and ohms law (there's tons of free ohms law calculators on line) so you have an understanding of the basic building blocks of all electronics -- that grounding makes everything so much easier.
    I say this as someone who started a career as an analog and digital design engineer so I say this from a point of knowledge although these days I don't remember much more than those basics having moved to computer software more than a couple of decades ago.
    To give an idea of how powerful these basics are consider this... put a couple of transistors together and you get a latch. Put latches together and you get basic logic gates (and, or, xor, not). The most complicated parts of your computers are just millions of logic gates so from understanding a transistor you have the grounding to be well on your way to understanding the most complicated machines in the world. Obviously that's a bit of an over simplification to make a point but it's not as far off from reality as you might think.

    • @SchrodingersBox
      @SchrodingersBox  4 года назад

      Duly noted. The series is basics in electrical first because I believe that’s first before learning electronics. For example, you have to understand power and ground side switching to understand a transistor’s function. But the second reason is I myself am still learning electronics so I need more familiarity myself before I can make electronics videos. But I will!!
      Great point and I agree with your idea.

    • @justdata3650
      @justdata3650 4 года назад

      @@SchrodingersBox Thanks for the nice comment and I could image your videos on electronics being exceptionally easy for people to follow given how clear you are in your communication. Or to put it another way, even though so many people have said it before, your videos are awesome!
      If this last diagnostic I'm trying doesn't work (I'm getting a smoke machine) for this long standing fuel problem I have I will be on your other channel sooner rather than later in the hope that a few more brains can help me track down the source of my problem with my E36 BMW. If you are curious, the short version is that it has a leak so slow I haven't been able to detect it (using die and many other tests). Slow as in it takes 10-12 hours before it's lost enough fuel pressure to cause me to have to turn the key several times to build up pressure so that it will start. I ignored it for a long time hoping it would get worse so it was easy to spot but no such luck... I need to stop otherwise I'm going to go down a rabbit hole of everything I have tried to find this thing.

    Where is the fly back diode located?
    I would guess that what you've been calling "pnp" transitor is actually an MOSFET transitor. One of the neat additions to an MOSFET device is you can sense the current flow through the main device. This would be what you're calling "REF LO".
    And actually the structure of the MOSFET device has an intrinsic diode which would work as the fly back diode.

    Merry christmas, I ran into a dodge charger v6 with spark ionization codes, 4 wire coils, clear the codes and it ran perfectly fine but when the code would set, dead misfire on cylinder 6 couldn't figure out the problem .-. The car had a new coil and 6 new spark plugs the customer replaced.

    • @SchrodingersBox
      @SchrodingersBox  4 года назад

      Anytime I have a misfire (or no start) I think “FASTTEC”- Basically fuel, air, spark, timing, exhaust, compression. It WILL be one of those (or combination). On a single cylinder misfire you can rule out timing. But it’s going to be one of the others. Check of there is spark and fuel first then try compression.

      pretty simple- check to see if the wire is a feed to the fuse or a return after the fuse by checking the voltage. If it’s a feed to the fuse box simply identify the missing power side of the fuse that the wire came from and that’s where to connect it. Easy!

      @@SchrodingersBox I havent collected any data to be honest becuase I dont even know where to start. There is no CEL and I have no OBD2 scanner but I'm going to buy the 'bluedriver' soon. Idk if there can be something left on the memory of the PCM that will give a hint as to what I can be, I have 2014 Chevy impala 2.5L ecotec it has 90k miles on it, I have a sound system in it, majority of the time when I'm at a red light with the music turned up all the way the car acts like if it wants to turn off, it starts to studder and does kinda of like jerking forward motion it's very annoying. All though I notice this very little with the radio turned down. Has happened every since I can remember, I saw your video where you found coolant in the cylinder bore and did smoke test and all that and I felt like that could be it but I'm not like that, I dont change stuff just cause I feel like it will fix it. I want to understand why and how my cars been doing this. I though cam and crank shaft postion sensors but my car is so well taken care of....
      My 2nd issue, is one with the dome light on the car, with the car on and the doors closed dome light has no type of function whatsoever, when the car is turned off and the doors are open is the only time I can make the dome light come on but the way it stays on I have to leave my finger on it lol soon as take it away it turns off.

    Usually REF LO is for the purpose of supplying the computer with a reference ground voltage from a place where that voltage is different (or varies) from the battery grounds being supplied to the computer. It is POSSIBLE they could measure something on the ref lo, but more likely they are measuring something else (for example the IGN CTR SIG) in reference to REF LO. This REF LO voltage is different from battery ground because of the high currents flowing through the coils and the slight resistance of the engine block and battery cable going to the battery ground. It's also possible that it's needed only to fire the transistor and no measuring takes place. Misfire is usually measured from crank position sensor RPM variation. That's my theory anyway.

    • @SchrodingersBox
      @SchrodingersBox  4 года назад

      Makes total sense to me. I agree- there has to be some difference to measure that there is activity (voltage or current) that takes place from the secondary.
      All I know is the secondary ignition event sends current to the Ref Lo. I do not know if there is voltage or not, I presume there is, in which case there must be some type of load on it,

    An explanation I have been looking for. I noticed the test light you are using from another video of yours, you explained that it can be used to test without hurting electronics, if this videos test light is the same. How and where can I find this test light? Also what is the proper name in case I have to search this out, is there a link you can provide. Now when I had a bad coil I used my scanners oscilloscope and using the ground going to the block and my amp clamp I could see all the coils fireing at the same time I noticed one of my coils had a different waveform, (7 Apple's 1 banana) but without knowing the fireing order and it didn't matter I used my secondary ignition pickup adapter on channel 2 of my oscilloscope and moved the clamp to each spark plug wire checking the oscilloscope until both waveforms lined up on the oscilloscope, found the bad coil. Another way you can do this to is just unplug each coil until you don't hear a difference in the engines fireing. But this method does not work on all cars. Oh if you get a Subaru plug wire you can test coil over plug applications out of head. Thanks for taking the time out to make these informative videos. You by far explain diagnostics step by step better than engine else I have found on RUclips. Keep up the good work.

The plug is trying to speak to you and the only way to hear its song of sorrow is to become truly one with the spark plug. You must let it flow through you as easily as water flows through a stream. Only then will you be able to diagnose the vehicle with a faulty fuel injector.

    hey Matt,
    I came across another four wire system on scanner danner which did not utilize the feedback wire and initially confused danner himself. This wire was actually connected to one end of the secondary coil and also went to block ground. Normally, one end of the secondary is tied into the positive feed of the coil and the other connects to the plug wire. Therefore on this particular car there were two wires connected to block ground. This type of coil, as was later discovered was built like a proper transformer as are the waste spark type of coils.

You mentioned they were changed as "recommended from diagnostics" but no data was shown on what the diagnostics where, For example to change the MAP- the only possible way diagnostics would recommend to change it wouyld be if you show incorrect MAP voltage after confirming reference, signal and ground-what were those measurements? So its confusing that all those parts were "recommended by diagnostics". Need to see the diagnostics data.
