Engagement Question(s): What's your favorite movie in the Rocky franchise and what's your favorite fight in the Rocky franchise? For me, my favorite movie in the franchise is Creed (with the original Rocky a very close second), and my favorite fight is probably a tie between the Rocky vs. Apollo fight in Rocky 2 and Adonis vs. Damien in Creed 3.
And as always, thanks for watching the video! I hope it meant something to you.

This video is amazing! I love your style of thematic deconstruction and the way you transition from topic to topic while still finding thematic relevance. You're an inspiration to me both as a writer and as a person looking to find the art in life genuinely
Off topic but would you ever consider making a video on The Last of Us Part 2?

@@gregheffley1727 Firstly, thank you so much for those incredibly kind words. And secondly, dude, you have no idea how much I would love to make a video about The Last of Us Part 2. Over time, it's not only become my favorite game of all time but perhaps my favorite story ever told in any medium. I adore it and have been planning on a video since 2020 when it came out. But it's such a huge game that I have so much to say about and there's also some other plans I have for it that make the project even bigger. And since I can't guarantee it'll get a million views immediately, I just can't justify disappearing for 3-6 months to make it, especially not right now while I'm trying to resuscitate the channel. Definitely trying to find a way to do it as soon as possible, though!

@@StoryStreet That's awesome! I recently got into the whole story of the Last of Us with the new HBO show and all of the new RUclips videos and when I got to part 2 everything I saw was so negative, but the game made some of the most unorthodox and thematic decisions I have ever seen in storytelling in any medium, and it's one of the first times where I think a lot of the hate towards the game is more of a flaw with the way that we view art rather than the quality of the art itself. Anyways, yes I would absolutely love to see your analysis of the story, but I'm perfectly ready to wait however long for it. I'm a lifelong fan anyways. LOVE YOUR WORK!!

I really wish you hadn't brought up how you feel Million Dollar Baby is depicting "disability as a death sentence." It's not, and no reasonable person would think that it is. For this one specific person, she would rather die than live like that, and the film does an excellent job of explaining why that is (for instance you left out her awful family, but they show that she has no other life to go back to but misery with them using her), but the film in no way suggests this as a prescriptive judgement for ALL disabled people, and I think you're way out of line for even suggesting that it does.

As someone who grew up boxing and now pursuing MMA I love how creators and directors draw a line that connects life and boxing together. It's a lonely sport, your in the ring or octagon against not only yourself but against your opponent. Drawing lines to how in life it's not just you versus the conflicts and hardships that hit you in life, but it's you against your own emotions and mental state. What will you do to keep going? What and how will you grow past these struggles and conflicts and adjust, and most importantly keep living life?

Something I really liked about this movie was the background noise. Not the music, just the noise. You'll hear nurses talking in the background, conversations happening in the background, and the main characters speaking to background characters and people off screen responding. It really adds to the general atmosphere of the movie and really lets you sit in it. It makes the world feel so lived in.

This video really got to me. My dad and I really loved the Rocky and Creed movies, our love for them were of the few things we shared.
He passed away last January and it just feels so surreal. This video helped me understand some things, like i'm starting to realize that he didn't just exist for me, because he really lived in pain due to a life of grief and regret, and his death was kind of a way for him to be set free of this pain.
Since then I've been only focusing in the shadows instead of looking at the light, that life is still worth living for. To celebrate the memory of those who are gone trough my own life and see myself as not as a mistake but someone who deserves to be loved and be happy. And also to hug my mom more often.
I believe my dad would've also loved Creed 3 too.
Probably nobody will read all of this and also I need professional help and not to just rely on some RUclips video, but i'll take it all, one round at a time.
Thanks for this video friend, you have gained a subscriber for eternity, y'all keep fighting the good fight! :)

I wasn’t even going to go see it until word of mouth started getting around that it was surprisingly good so I took a chance with my $12, and I’m glad that I did. It became one of my favorite films of 2015 and to be honest, I’ve enjoyed the other two Creed films as well. They’ve done a great job of with the new direction they’ve taken this franchise in. Sorry for the tl;dr. Great video, BTW.

GOOD JOB!! Million Dollar Baby is in my top 20 of all time favorites as a filmhead who watches films as far back as the mid 40's. The commentary on the shadows is on point because even I was thinking it wasn't just a touch, it was prominent use enough to consider some of these boxing movies fit for a Neo-noir category , especially by the time we get to Dame Anderson. Several similarities between Maggie and Dame, even though Donnie and Dame are only a few years apart, they did an excellent job of making him seem both old school and old and through him tackling Ageism.

  • @josephk6214

This is a fantastic analysis. Boxing is such a timeless capsule of storytelling and visceral violence and emotion. I'd only say Creed isn't the first time we've really seen Rocky digress from those masculine traits and show him in states of weakness. We've seen Rocky go through moments of relatable heartache and weakness in all the movies. Of the course, the execution is always up for debate, but Rocky has always had moments of humanity -- even if fleeting amongst his godly outings before Rocky Balboa. I think what's quite revolutionary for Creed and Rocky's locker scene is we've never seen Rocky This low. It also helps if you know Sylvester Stallone channeled the pain of losing his son into his performance and it easily becomes a top 3 Rocky character moment. Neverthless, it's nice to think of these movies as basically boxing soap operas for men, including the Creed movies haha

I have to disagree with the statement “none of the sequels” could live up to the original. Every film has their moments that touch the fans. Every film has something memorable. even the films that are technically not up to the standards of the first two rocky movies-rocky 3 and 4, ARE FAVORITES of many. I think rocky 2 came pretty close to equaled the original. And others may think rocky 2 is better than one. And there is a great review online somewhere where the reviewer commented that to him, rocky 6 was the TRUE sequel to rocky 1
But I LOVE how you reflected on creed- it was literally living up to a legend, that’s an underdog. How many spin-offs fail? Or sequels fail? (Cough cough Star Wars). But how many match and excel in thst hype? Not many. And creed to me cemented again that rocky, in the hands of ppl who care, will live on and that truly most of the series is special. ThTs something marvel movies, star wars, Harry Potter, lord of the rings/hobbit and so ms y big name franchises that have more money than rocky ever will have can’t say.

Lived in belair, worked in what appears to be a investing firm, got the girl, had rocky teach him to box….yea, he was in juvie and foster care, but only as a kid….personally I found Victor Drago the true underdog story in creed 2 and Damian in creed 3

I disagree with your statement there. Adonis Creed's beginnings were far from privilege. First of all, he was a product of Apollo Creed's affair. He is Apollo Creed's illegitimate son and he never got to know his father. He was raised in group homes where he was physically abused. Entangled in a world of frustration and anger. His life only started to get better once Apollo Creed's wife came to see him.
Even though Adonis had somewhat a harsh confidence about himself, he had to seek Rocky in order to get the pride and strength and lose his fear of being a "fake Creed".

This video seems to suggest there is no real virtuous violence, as though self defense, or defense of another, or defense of a nation/principle etc. can never justify violence. I'm not sure I totally agree with this.

Jeez, Stallone got FLAT OUT ROBBED of the Oscar! And, yeah, I saw Mark Rylance’s Perfectly Boring performance in Bridge of Spies…Safe, dull…kind of lifeless…it still sucks

film therapy said it best. that this movie and the Rocky series as a whole (with the exception of Rocky V 🤮) is a perfect example of healthy masculinity

RUclips provides them, if you go to the three dots on the top right of the video there is a "captions" button that should work for most videos

49:30 I dont think its a callus depiction of disability. A lot of people would rather die than be just stuck in a bed unable to truly live for the rest of their life. Because what is the point of a life where you cannot truly experience things or interact anymore?

It sounds like you aren't the biggest fan of Rocky Balboa (the movie) and I'm quite curious as to why
