I guess I'm just to old school. I remember when all you could get was a depth finder. We still caught fish by the boat loads by learning the waters. Enjoyed watching as usual.
New comer and new subscriber. What I love about this is you aren’t plugging a product, you are informative, and fish with a working man’s set up. Love it!!! Great job!
I have the active target by lowrance. Just got it early this year absolutely love it. I just really got into fishing a few years ago. I bought a v-hull Jon boat stripped it and fixed it all up and put a lowrance ti2 on it and I never really knew how to read it all that well so I would just blindly fish and look for spots I think would look good. I would catch an occasional fish here and there but also being bummed out by not catching much. Growing up my dad was a workaholic so time spent fishing with him was few and far in between so I didn’t grow up being taught in depth on how to read and study the fish what works and what doesn’t. My buddy introduced me to the active target by lowrance and I ended up buying one. So far this year I have probably caught more crappie than in my whole 35 years of life. 😂😂. I will never claim to be an expert on fishing and I never will be one and just because I have an active target doesn’t make me feel like an expert. It just helps me get more fish now. I have learned though that crappie love live minnows and that’s mostly what I use. A single gold Aberdeen hook with a minnow and a split shot has been my go to lately. My dad and I both live on the same lake now a few miles away from each other and just this year we started fishing for crappie. He will come by on his boat and pick me up at my house and we have been trolling for them and getting them that way as well with jigs. I do want to add though that I admire everyone that keeps it simple on the electronics and knows how to fill the cooler with lots of fish without the need for high tech equipment.
Nice! I would use what ever it takes to catch a good mess. I have had my sonar for around 2 years. And still don't know how to use it the proper way but I pick up on stuff here and there. It does help. Just more tools to fill that stringer. I use the beetle spin like a slow jig. It helps me locate crappie. The bigger crappie like it with a live minnow. Helps me catch some good ons🙂 . That's nice you and your dad can fish together like that. Great times 😄
No ice here in south Michigan, well no safe ice. Had good ice after the storm, but warmed up and it’s gone. Went out on ice once did good on the bluegill and a couple crappie. Oh happy new year!!
Well speaking about old school, im 87 yers old, and i remember well when there were no fish finders at all. My first fish finder was a Lowrance portable flasher type portable unit known as the green box. Its main purpose was to let me know the depth, so that i could stay in the proper water depth for the type lures we were using, especially when trolling. Some of the very large lakes i fished would be very shallow in some areas and much time can be wasted recovering hung up lures. I also had the Lowrance paper graph machines called the X15 and later the X16. Its hard to imagine today how much further we can go with electronics. But the simple fact is that knowing the areas you fish well, along with paying close attention to whats happening around you is whats most important for success. These are the reasons Fish Yanker is as successful as he is. The helix 7 unit on his boat is simply a little extra unnecessary icing on the cake. Today due to my age and condition im simply a crappie fisherman, fishing from a 14’ jon boat here in Florida. I have a helix 5 on my boat which is basically the same as the 7 but lacks the side imaging aspect. I fish the same small lake pretty much all the time, and i know it so well i could get by with no fish finder. Granted, i got to know it that well with the aid of my $300 fish finder. I dont look for fish on it anyway, but i do look for bait on the screen. I wouldnt argue that the live scope units can be very helpfull, especially in deeper water situations. But staring at a screen in order to keep the boat in just the right position, just isnt my idea of a nice day on the water. Ive made 24 trips since i started back fishing after the summer heat starting on Oct 22. I need 12 more crappies to reach 500 with the inexpensive electronics. All on jigs and Bobby Garland baby shad or similar without minnows. Mind you i would also use minnows at least at times, but it would require about another hour in order to get them from where i live.
Yes sir. I just got my sonar about a year and a half ago. I used to have a little lowrance elite 4 chirp. The reason I use a sonar here where I'm at just is because I don't know none of these lakes. I moved here 5 years ago. And just started to fish around here 2years ago. I can go to my hometown and do just like you said. catch fish any where because I know where they're all at. But here at my new town, I am still learning all the lakes and there's a bunch of them. It really helps to know the water temperature the depth and see some of the structure so I can learn the lakes. I can only imagine how hard it must have been with that portable flasher. But I guess that was high tech back then. My dad was a crappie fisherman and he would take me fishing all the time. I chose to bass fish when I got old enough. But now I look back on him when he was here and he was really good and talented. He New how to catch crappie with nothing. He did a lot of Union work and worked all over the United States from Washington State California Texas so we lived a lot of different places and he could always drive up to a lake and catch crappie. he would usually pick the windy side or the west side of the bank and he might sit there all day but he would catch a mess a fish with corks and minnows. I would love to go fishing with my dad again just to get some knowledge from him cuz I was always focused on bass fishing when he was here. But I did listen to him and I watched him many times. I would grab my gear and take off down the bank bass fishing and he would sit there and wait for them crappie to come in. I think about him a lot of the times when I'm out there crappie fishing, the patience that he had and I think that's a lot of the reason I can catch crappie is because I have patience now. Sure do miss him. Time on the water and patience is probably the best advice that I could give. Wished you had a fishing channel because I'd love to learn some stuff from you. Thank you Ernie I appreciate you
Love the videos, You are fishing in its truest form. Straight up Talent, I feel the live scope stuff takes away from nature . Nothing like old school fishing. It’s good for your soul. Me living in crowded California fishing is my escape . Thank you for sharing
Thank you I appreciate that very much. fishing is a great escape from the rat race. When I was young I lived in Modesto California, elementary age. My dad would get all the neighborhood kids and he would take us all to the canal where we would catch lots of carp. so much fun catching them big fish when you are little.
Sometime when you get some bad weather or your bored, do a video about the Corks you like, jigheads sizes ,brands, and hooks you like . Small differences sometimes making a big difference. Catching vs. Fishing Thank you!!!
YANK!!! I was getting a little worried about ya YANKER. I thought man it’s almost 10 days in the new year and no fishing video lol. Yeah it’s been cold where I’m at to. My order of fish liking goes crappie, bluegill, catfish then any other kind lol. I hope you have a fantastic fishing year in 2023. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. Yeah this weather has been kinda tricky, but I get out there when I can. Now the river is jumping up fast so I will try some other lakes and creeks for awhile. We will see what we can find. Thank you proud papaw
Don't see many big ducks down on your end of the river do ya ? Just found your channel and it's great so far. It's cool to see that part of the cache given up some good crappy since the ducks are all locked down on the rest arrears and not hitting traditional public spots anymore.
I believe a livescope takes the fun out of learning the water your on. What happened to using a paper map of the lake or water your on to figure it out? But that's my opinion. Love watching your videos & keep doing a great job.
Yes sir. It's more challenging to use a map and chase the crappie around. I have fun getting theses guys to bite. Figuring out the Color of jigs, type of jigs, depth, water temps and bait they are following. Half the fun is locating them. Glad you are enjoying the videos. Thank you
Great video and great fish! I just subscribed....I started my own RUclips fishing channel a couple of months back and really enjoyed your video. Keep up the good work!
Thank you. Congrats on the new channel. I did a lot of studying on youtube so maybe I can be of help from time to time. Don't be afraid to ask me questions if you need any advice. I will gladly help if I can. Thank you for subscribing
You do a good Job With that Technique that much I Can Attest To , You've Used It In All Types Of Water Conditions and Temps , The Proof In This Case Ain't In The Pudding It's Bogged Down In The Hunts Ketchup lol , I'm in total agreement with you ,trout can't compare to Sacilait or Crappie , Never had Walleye or Sauger , Those Yellow Perch and Walleye are on my bucket list lol, I live close enough to the coast for a little Flounder Fishing and no doubt , Cook fresh Gulf Flounder Filets and Some Crappie Filets It's Close To The Same , I like some Yearling Bass Filets Too , Shell Cracker has always been a favorite , Love The Spring Blue Gill Fishing, grew up on Bream fishing and Catfishing with my Grandpa , that's where this All Started lol,, Hope You And The Family Have A Great And Successful 2023 Brother
Thank you. I'll try to keep an open mind when trying other species of fish everybody Cooks a little different so you never know. I'm too afraid I might miss something good so I will try it. I used to eat bass all the time. Bass is a good clean eating fish no doubt. My kids still ask for bass when we have a fish fry and my son he usually brings a few. But I just prefer the taste of crappie and bream more in my later years. Happy New Year to you and yours and I appreciate you watching.
Croppy are ok. A little on the mushy side. I rather eat a bass than a mushy croppy. Now walleye is awsome. The yellow perch is good too. Just my opinion. Trout it's just ok. I love catching croppy.
Livescope makes someone who dont actually know much about fish, their habits, etc seem like a pro. Anyone can become an internet hero crappie fisherman with livescope. No skill involved. Just watch the screen. Not impressed. Now put me in a boat with a guy (or gal) that catches crappie regularly without a video-game-like livescope and I'll in company with a fisherman who knows what they are actually doing! Good work!
Yes sir. What I see at my local reservoir is guys pulling up to a place where they see crappie in a top with live scope and they sit in that spot all day long trying to catch them. Some have success and some don't. They still have to make them bite. some people just don't have patience even when they can see the fish on live scope. So they are basically getting them a live scope and then learning how to get them to bite. On the other hand a good crappie fisherman can take his fishing to another level with a live scope. But man they sure do cost a lot of money especially since you got to get a spot lock trolling motor go with it. I like chasing the crappie by paying attention to the bait the water temps the seasons. It's just more challenging and fun. Thank you 8th day chronicles
