"For What It's Worth (Stop, Hey What's That Sound)" (often referred to as simply "For What It's Worth") is a song written by Stephen Stills. Performed by Buffalo Springfield, it was recorded on December 5, 1966, released as a single on Atco Records in December 1966 and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the spring of 1967.
It was later added to the March 1967 second pressing of their first album, Buffalo Springfield. The title was added after the song was written, and does not appear in the lyrics.
In 2004 Rolling Stone magazine ranked the song at number 63 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
Stills said in an interview that the name of the song came about when he presented it to the record company executive Ahmet Ertegun (who signed Buffalo Springfield to the Atlantic Records-owned ATCO label). Stills said "I have this song here, for what it's worth, if you want it." Another producer, Charlie Greene, claims that Stills first said the above line to him, but credits Ahmet Ertegun with giving the single the parenthetical subtitle "Stop, Hey What's That Sound" in order that the song would be more easily recognized.
The song was recorded on December 5, 1966, at Columbia Studios, Hollywood. Tom Dowd claimed he mixed the song at Atlantic's studio in New York, though this has been disputed. Dowd did take part in the production of Cher's version of the song in 1969. One of the most recognizable elements of the song is Neil Young's use of guitar harmonics.
While memories of the November riots were still fresh, the group and Ertegun pushed for a rush-release of "For What It's Worth". On December 10, 1966, five days after the song was recorded, local Top 40 radio station KHJ began playing the single. It first appeared on the station's "Boss 30" chart on December 28, 1966, at number 26, and was followed by rival KRLA on January 14, 1967, where the single entered its "Top 40 Requests" at number eight. Also on January 14, Billboard magazine identified it as a "regional breakout" and the single appeared on its Bubbling Under the Hot 100 chart. Two weeks later, it debuted at number 90 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at number seven on March 25 and remained on the chart for a total of fifteen weeks. Although the single did not reach the charts in the U.K., the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) certified a 2004 release by Warner Music as platinum (sales and streams of 600,000) in 2023.
In 2000, the 1966 recording of "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield on ATCO Records was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The HOF lists the ATCO date as 1967. Видеоклипы

A true piece of rock music history from the sixties.
And it’s sad kids now days don’t know what is good music they thank rap is good music
@@wesleybrown9566Not “all” kids today.
This was in 67...not 66. Just sayin
I was either -1 or -2 lol 68
One of my favorite songs and still pertinent to our time now!
It's time to bring this song back for today's troubles.
RIGHT!!!
I never knew what they looked like until today.
The talent doesn’t exist anymore…
@@nigel900So true.....the talent is gone with the wind
@@stevenrobert8567 Amen brother… it’s a shame.
Stephen Stills, Lowell George, Terry Kath, Carol King, Paul Simon, John Fogerty, Marvin Gaye, and the list goes on. What an incredible generation of singer-songwriters in that era. We were spoiled!

Joni Mitchell
Thanks for including Marvin Gaye!
Lot a good ones in every age. Including now.

A true masterpiece of rock music history from the sixties.
So true. I c'ant get this out of my mind its so good.
@@martinjohnson9316lol true
@@wesleybrown9566 I'm 66 years old...this is real. The Cult should cover this.
Rock?
The best, when music was real and not the electronically enhanced BS they put pot today. Makes me happy to have grown up in the 60's.
Relevant today
The maturity of the song writing is incredible.
Stills was 21 when he wrote it.
One of the best songs EVER
So stirring and powerful. Classic masterpiece. 🥰
We had a steamroller factory here in Springfield, Ohio & it was called Buffalo Springfield. One of the machines was parked on the street in California when the band members noticed it & saw the name Buffalo Springfield on it & thought it would be a great name for their group.
"Stop, children, what's that sound? Everybody look what's going down......."
God, I never dreamed those lyrics would be so relevant and actual again. And they are, even more than the first time around.
Magnificent! All the Greatest music has Already been done…
Great classic song. Brings back fond memories of my much younger days. Good friends, good times, things were so much simpler then.😍 And, we got along just fine without computers and smart phones.
Anthem of the 60s😮
I wore out a 45 of this back in the 60s. I still love it and it is still relevant today.
Four men, from one band and so much music to contribute to the future generations!
It's Never Gets Old. SUMMER 🌞🌞 GOLD OF LOVE 1967.
He look so darn good in that sheriff hat ❤❤❤
Stephen sure does - even with a missing tooth ha! He’s still handsome, I love his smile

@@KittyGrizGriz It wasn't missing - it was receded. George Harrison had a similar issue.
Thanks for the great sound. I agree with all the comments. As a 18 year old in 1967 I remember where I was and what I was doing the first time I heard this song. I knew I was listening to something special.
No kiddin ! I was 17 I think I first heard it on a Saturday morning American Bandstand episode ? Never have grown tired of the song it's a masterpiece
Great protest song from the 60's and the enhancement to the video makes so much difference. The 1960's was a time of war, racial disturbances, assassinations, but also a time of great music and love.
👍👍👍👍👍👍✌✌✌✌✌✌

True. But you can't have great music without the other.
About the unrest on The Sunset Strip in ‘66 or ‘67. There were a handful of artists who wrote tunes to comment on those events!
Oooh! I LOVE Buffalo Springfield & especially this song, this sounds & looks GREAT!!
I Visited Nashville, TN a couple months ago & went downtown - it was fantastic! I was dancing along down the sidewalks, as live music was pouring out of the open windows/doorways! Went to the “Country Music Hall of Fame Museum.”
My favorite part was the:
California Country Rock Bands connection; Buffalo Springfield, Poco, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Michael Nesmith, CCR, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band etc…musical pioneers-geniuses.
This song has a lot of meaning to it to me I think it's the truth and step out of line man come and take you away❤❤
Love this song reminds me of someone I hold very dear to my heart ❤
It really is, lyrics, guitar it has it all.
Great job gentlemen.Big Thanks to you both.
Thank you Larry.
One of my favourite songs of that time, still fits today.

Great job! A tune that sticks to your brain for ever. Pure sixties. Thanks to both of you!
Thanks Gary!
man look how young they are - especially young with those huge sideburns. richie furay went on to POCO - the first band that fused a country sound with rock - before anyone had ever heard of the EAGLES. if you can find a video of POCO doing 'you better think twice ' please post it. thank you for letting me relive my youth !
Still such a fine song 🎵 sounds great, Smurf!
Thank you very much, Karen.
1:42 - Is that Tommy Smothers with the HOORAY sign? Oh yeah - NICE SIDEBURNS, Neil! WOWSERS.

What a fabulous blast from the past! This sure does bring back some great memories! ❤
I felt the need to hear this song, as it is very relevant to today. Young people protesters speaking their minds, and also many feel empowered by social media believing all they hear. As they comment they must be careful, as a soldier you step out of line the enemy takes you away. Masterpiece is this song
I love Stephen’s smile it’s so cute!!! I’ve never seen the full performance without cuts before so thanks for uploading!!
Our pleasure!
Timeless masterpiece. With this and "Long Time Coming" from CSN and "Fortunate Son" by Creedence you have three of the most direct protest songs ever written.
To create mood and atmosphere with music is a craft many attempt but few pull of successfully. This is how its done
I’m reminded of that old saying: “what’s old is new again.” It seems that despite all our best efforts we are still essentially uncaring about others. Even if it means we hurt ourselves!
Excellent sound quality and stereo channel separation.
This song applies today the same as the 60s
Great performance but wish it was fully completed i love watching stephen dance in those boots which you dont see in this cut version
1 of my favourite anti war sounds! Love it❤
Young people speaking their minds, are getting so much resistance from behind…

No 3 this song.
All great songs
Those are not sideburns on Neil’s face. They’re military grade Velcro strips attached to his hair. They’ve got some wicked tornados in Canada.
😂😂
Haha!🌪️ Good One!
I miss the look of long hair and a touch of sideburns on men from back then, my guy friends etc…
You’re on point here - the “hairy” 60s-70s.
Those would be mutton chops - if the sheep wasn’t shorn before it went in the oven!
That's Steven Stills. Neil was a child when that song was recorded. Those sideburns are real.
That's when they were all smoking hot.
An exceptional presentation of a very evocative and emotive song, the best video I have seen so thank you so much. Well done
Many thanks, Peter.

Top 5 of the 60's!
And WTF were they doing halfway around the world in some backward south-east Asian place they'd never even heard of before?
@@branko4033 Brother, I got that in the first person!!
The people of the 60s fought hard for our rights. We can't let their sacrifices or our rights be reversed by authoritarians.

The music from the sixty tells the truth
Neil Young hidden in the background for most of the song.
I saw Neil Young😮
Neil’s tremolo🤘
This is true it's happening now
I like to know how Buffalo Springfield came up the the title " For What It's Worth?" because they never say title at all while they're singing the song at all! I'm just letting you know about it right here on RUclips Channel for sure period and that's it!
It just came from conversation about what they had in the song. Stills has talked about it.
@@GH-oi2jfWhen did that happen? I don't know nothing about it at all for sure!
Great, great, song.
