The haunted house on film has its roots in 1944’s The Uninvited. But, The history of the haunted house on film dates back to the earliest years of talking pictures. From the Old Dark House to Bly Manor, the story of how the movies started to take ghoss seriously starts with “The Uninvited”.
But, any fan of classic films knows that you can’t talk about The Uninvited without talking about the film’s young and beautiful star, Gail Russell. Gail Russell was Hollywood’s most reluctant star (even more so than Sterling Hayden!). Pushed into films, she did her best despite debilitating stage fright.
Gail Russell’s story is one of the saddest stories I know from the Hollywood studio era. Gail Russell’s tragic story, the story of The Uninvited and the haunted house are all inextricably linked.
(I love scary movies, but I have the hardest time watching them because I love/hate the anxiousness that comes with not knowing what fate is going to befall the film’s characters.)
