"Ninsun's Song", here sung by soprano Maya Hayashi, is from the forthcoming opera/ musical "Gilgamesh" by Michael Guinn, the main project of my Ph.D. in composition which is in progress. In this scene from Act I (from the third tablet of the Epic of Gilgamesh) Ninsun sings a hymn of praise to Shamash asking for his help in protecting her son Gilgamesh when he goes to fight Humbaba. Video by Leonardo Marrone. The video is based on Gustav Dore's illustrations of the Divine Comedy (Paradiso), which you can explore more here: www.doreillustr...
Lyrics below. Enjoy.
Shall I see
his face once more, this cedar
dreaming son of mine?
Shall his face
be just a memory,
more threadbare all through time?
The night is falling away
Shamash, Shamash,
Come to me, come to me
I whisper in your ear:
Blow thirteen winds
I live in fear
to have such a restless child
Incense rise, fill his eyes
till Shamash sees me
Shamash, who
but you can bring us hope
when others turn away?
See my heart,
this temple's flower opens
to you every day
Shamash, Shamash...

@@camille_6569 Thank you again! There is more of the opera at the link in the description above, and there are a couple of other videos here on RUclips ("Nineveh's Burning" and "Between Us", the latter the finale as it is in its present state). It isn't complete yet but will be in the next two years as it is my PhD project. I hope this helps. I really appreciate your interest very much!
Michael Guinn thanks for the answer ! Then I’ll wait (eagerly) for the rest of the opera to come out and until then I’ll listen to all that has already been released ! :-) keep it up ! Your work is truly stunning !

Beautiful song really, I really want to know the name of the painting/drawing used in the video as well
Sorry, Happy Dapp, I don't know exactly the name of the painting used in the video, but I do know that the filmmaker based the visuals on the work of animator Larry Jordan. If you like that style, you might want to check out his website: lawrencecjordan.com/Films.html
It's an illustration by Gustav Doré based off of descriptions of Paradise in the Divine Comedy. Here is a link to an online gallery containing all his illustrations: www.doreillustrations.com/gallery.html
@@BitchItsJules Thank you for the link, Julian!
@@michaelguinn9829 No problem. Maybe you can add it to the description where more people will see. :) Thank you for this beautiful piece of art; I appreciate your creativity!
@@BitchItsJules Good idea. I've added the link to the description. Thanks again, Julian!
Is this song actually in the epic or is this a tribute? I can't recall, shame on me. Oh! The penguin book doesn't have ALL the tablets translated so... I'm assuming yes?
Hi Christopher, this song is a dramatization of a prayer that Ninsun makes in the epic. The structure is based on other types of Mesopotamian prayers and of course on her own appeal to Shamash in the epic itself. The tablet is somewhat damaged in places, so it couldn't be a word-for-word translation. No shame necessary! :)
Hi, can i use this music for non-commercial content?
Could you let me know what you plan to use it for specifically? It's probably fine, but I'd just like to know.
@@michaelguinn9829 For my content. You can see an example on my youtube.
@@nozenstudios Sure, no problem.
@@michaelguinn9829 thank youuu
