I was 7 when the special aired and I was totally mesmorized - my parents thought it was absolute crap - but kids loved it. You also have to understand that many of the guest stars (Art Carney, Bea Arthur, and Harvey Corman) were huge comic tv stars at the time. Also, Dianne Carroll was a huge star, so this fit in to the crazy variety programs we saw all the time. We were obsessed with Donny & Marie and Shields & Yarnell, Carol Burnette, etc. so to have Star Wars in that format was like crack to us.
Is it crap? Yes. Was it wildly entertaining to children? Hell yeah!
And kids wanted any star wars toy or content, so we ate it up. I make no apologies 😊

As someone who was 14 at the time this aired, let me roll back some of the weirdness for you. In the 70's, Christmas Specials were *always* like this... Donny and Marie... Sony and Cher... Captain and Tennille... etc... The entire show was just sitting in a mountain lodge, waiting for the occasional guest star to stop by and do a funny skit or sing a song... And that's what you get here.... Bea Arthur (Maude), Harvey Korman (Carol and Burnett), Art Carney (The Honemooners), Diahann Carroll... Jefferson Starship... These were *huge* guest stars. So, the disjointed nature of it is just the way these things ran at the time. It was still horrible... I love seeing people watch this for the first time, just for the reactions...

It's very much a snapshot of Hollywood and the TV biz at that point in time, and it's clearly managed by a bunch of old-school producers who just said "We'll just make it a Star Wars themed variety show" which were quite common on TV back then. That's how you wind up with Art Carney and Jefferson Starship ("the kids will love them!") and Bea Arthur, who only really became cool after hipsters discovered Golden Girls.
I realize this is difficult for younger folks to understand, but we didn't even have films on VHS tape yet in 1979, so the only way to see Star Wars was in the movie theater. So when this came out, it was a huge deal for Star Wars fans, and no one complained that much because that sort of variety show was pretty common. It's a lot like the way some of us OG fans feel about the prequels... we were desperate for more Star Wars content so it took a few years for us to admit that maybe they weren't actually very good films.

Leia was holding it to help her reach out through the force and get Ben to hear her, and was holding it when she died. She seemed to use it as a physical embodiment of the feelings she needed to feel to reach out to her and Han’s son. It would’ve been able to be more clear if not for Fisher’s passing, but that didn’t seem out of nowhere at all to me (Han’s dice would’ve probably been a better symbol, but they were presumably on the Falcon).

The extent of Lucas' involvement in the special was his suggestion to build the show around Chewbacca's family. CBS came to him with the idea of a special and hired experienced comedy and variety show writers and producers to come up with the story. Everybody had different ideas -they used all of them and threw them a the screen.
I watched this in 1978. My first question was why did they hire Sandy Duncan to play Luke? .

So I missed this in real time, but I remember managing to see it when I was young somehow. Can’t imagine how if Lucas disappeared it until home video was a thing. In those days, being able to watch a VCR tape of something was a big deal. They used to sell the tapes at grocery stores for like $50-$80. It was a strange time.

I was exposed to far more media that was not kid-friendly that scarred my young mind - Watership Down, Plague Dogs, the Japanese version of Little Mermaid..... I got introduced to Star Wars when I was six years old (1984). I watched both Ewok movies and owned them on VHS and regularly watched the Ewok and Droids Saturday morning cartoons when they aired. I didn’t see the Holiday Special until a few years ago and I think my reaction was most similar to Greg’s where I started out liking it and then as it kept going I found myself checking to see how much more time was left. Now whenever I watch it I basically just skip around to the parts I liked most and don’t bother with the rest. I think Greg’s idea for a second Holiday Special is a good idea. In fact, I think it’d be interesting to have a Holiday Special set within each of the now official eras of Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, The Old Republic, The High Republic, Fall of the Jedi, Reign of the Empire, The New Republic, Rise of the First Order, and New Jedi Order. But definitely like Greg said with an actual plot. To be fair since variety shows aren’t a thing now I think they’d be better. I personally enjoy the LEGO Star Wars shows and specials, but it’s because they have the same quirky sense of humor as the LEGO movies, video games, etc. And I personally enjoyed watching Star Wars: Resistance. I’m not saying it’s a must watch series, but I found it a lot easier to watch than the Holiday Special (I mean each week’s episode was under thirty minutes so that’s definitely probably why). I don’t think I’ve seen anyone reacting to the Ewok films or to the 1980’s Ewok and Droid cartoons. I’ve watched these when they were put on Disney+. The cartoons seem about par for the course for 1980s cartoons of the time. I’ve watched others from around the same time and I definitely realize why most of the cartoons I most remember with great nostalgia are from the very late 1980s and early 1990s….those just had better stories usually. Caravan of Courage is a good movie. Battle for Endor I discovered really even like as a kid and having watched it now as an adult and read up about the process to make it, I definitely think it’s just amazing it ever got made and finished and aired. I know that the Ewok films were canon at one point and supposedly took place between films A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. However I know Lucas when the prequels came out said they weren’t canon any longer. I have no idea if Disney changed that. I don’t think they made them canon. They were really popular films at the time and like the Ewok cartoon added more to the Ewoks. I think Michael’s right on why the Holiday Special was made…and lots of Star Wars stuff after Return of the Jedi but before the original trilogy special editions were released in theaters. It was a way to keep Star Wars in the mainstream which helped sell merchandise which kept Star Wars a popular entertainment property. If none of those things would have happened , then Disney nor anyone else would have been willing to pay so much to obtain the property. And I agree with Greg regarding the sequel trilogy main characters. There’s lots of kids who those characters were their first introduction to Star Wars and those films were the first they saw. Just as there are folks who the prequels were their introduction or Clone Wars series or Rebels series, etc. Even now Star Wars has a new show for preschoolers, thus introducing another generation to Star Wars through that series and those characters (Yoda is part of it).
    Thanks for a great reaction!
