  • Global citizenship education is about exploring the root cause of injustice - locally and globally. It aims to explore the systemic structures that create these inequalities and oppression as well as the historical causes and current effects.
Afri and Síolta Chroí took students from Inver college in Carrickmacross on an experiential learning tour to explore these topics.
We started in Carrickmacross workhouse where we explored the history and consequences of colonialism and oppression.
Immediately following this, students took a bus to a stretch of land just outside Carrickmacross, where we looked at 3 sites, in particular:
    1) A Landlord’s estate (Shirley estate) owned by an absentee British landlord,
    2) A direct provision centre and
    3) An open pit mine.
Students were encouraged to explore these issues and how they connect with local and global issues.
For over four decades Afri has been involved in opposing war, promoting food sovereignty and tackling climate change - working especially with Secondary and Third level students as well as with the general public. We organise the annual Famine Walk in Mayo, a Hedge School in TU Blanchardstown and Féile Bríde in Kildare. Thank you for continuing to support our work.
