Have you watched Moonlight? What did you guys think of it? Had to cut out many parts/music due to copyright issues :( but after multiple edits, I finally got the video up and running! It's very unfortunate the video had to change a lot but I'm happy I can share it in one form or another! Enjoy!
Just found out about your channel, the content is so great :'). Moonlight was such a great movie and you noticed so many little details that made it great, it was really nice to see
The way this film handles food and food preparation is utterly heartbreaking. To prepare a meal for someone is love and compassion. His mother never did. Juan and his partner made him food. Then in the climax when Kevin makes him food. It's one of the most subtle and profound sequences of compassion I've ever seen in cinema. The diner scene with Kevin and Chiron is incredibly beautiful and very deep.
Your analysis is SPOT ON, I hadn't made this connection.....(& I'm a home cook !!!) This is yet ANOTHER reminder to me that All works of art require SEVERAL VIEWINGS , OR RE READING OR RE LISTENINGS TO PICK UP SUBTLE OR not so subtle things we may miss the first time around,... thanks for this thoughtful Post. Harold.
I have nothing in common with the main character: female, lesbian, asian, have a relatively good home life, having both still married parents. Nothing at all besides being gay. I cried so much watching this film. I somehow feel the alienation he feels growing up being gay and trying to figure yourself out without anybody knowing. Especially when he was being attacked by Kevin, it feels like the only good thing in your life isn’t good anymore. I love this movie to pieces.
as someone who isn’t gay, this movie still resonates with me so much. it helped me realize so much about myself and my true self. watching this film just fucking floors me. i love this movie for so many reasons but mostly bc now i’m comfortable with who i am, and once i figure out who i am, it won’t matter what it is bc i’ll be happy. (and damn is this movie just beautiful) it helped me realize my sexuality too bc it showed me how i’m probably not gay considering i didn’t resonate with those parts of the film and i will always think of this movie as the defining factor in my sexuality. and water will always be changed for me. it feels like my true self. the self that this movie helped realize.
Oh my god same... i have everything in common w u. Female lesbian asian and good family. But i cant accept myself. Im uncomfortable with showing who i like. I always distance myself from my crushes because im scared... this video made me cry, made me realize how lonely i am
"Nothing at all besides....." being human thats the only thing you need to have in common and you dont actually even need that. you cant relate to nemo in finding nemo? why even look at this in terms of what is different? with that mentality you'll only ever limit your ability to connect with others.
what i love about this movie is how i’m not even close to this character, yet he’s the most like me i’ve ever met. i’m straight, hispanic, living in a upper middle class setting and yet this character is so personal. this movie taught me so much. being yourself and discovering who u are is beautiful and is what the meaning of life is. helping me realize my personality isn’t something to hold back bc myself is what’s important. i fucking love this movie, my favorite of all time
I think youre just a good person man, someone who has empathy and can relate to someone different than them. I wish more people like you were out there.
i will never forget the emotions that I felt when I first saw this movie and the scene of Chiron's mom yelling at him but you can't hear a thing. it sounds much louder than if it did have audio. what hurts even more is the use of pink light behind her which normally pink symbolizes affection, harmony, inner peace, and approachability, but with that scene it depicts the exact opposite which is the betrayal, the lack of care, support, and love from a parental figure.
I saw a lot of myself in chirone minus the drug dealing and mother on drugs. Trying to find oneself in the hood as a young gay black male in the 90s was hell. No internet or social media. We were all navigating in the dark. Love this movie because it forces me to see the weakness in appearing strong to everyone and strength in being emotional vulnerable to the people I cherish.
There's strength in surviving that, & still finding yourself & being able to love others & let yourself be loved in return. I hope we all do our best to protect future generations from feeling alone. We can't go back.
In the end Chiron becomes much more like Juan than you expect. Juan was a drug dealer and his "persona" was the hard outer shell required to protect himself in the world. But behind it with regular people he was himself. A man who was open, accepting, and loving. This is who he chose to be. Chiron as well is a drug dealer who is trying to find himself. His transformation into Black is what everyone expects him to be. But by the end of the movie he's willing to change and opens to his true self. Someone who is vulnerable someone who chooses to be himself.
I also think the difference between juan and Chiron as black initially is, that Juan is still in touch with his loving, open side ( with Teresa and little f. eg.) and Chiron is very reclused still before meeting with Kevin. I think Kevin taught him to be vulnerable and in tune with his sensitive side .
When I watched this movie a few years ago, I remember feeling rushed with emotions and confusion. Being young and not understanding myself. Nice to see all the things that played into that, that I didn’t even notice. Amazing work, keep it up!
Me too. I wanted to scoop little Chiron up & take him somewhere he'd be safe to be himself. This film gives me a lump in the throat EVERY TIME I watch it.
this review actually made me burst into tears at the end, and rest assured it was in a good way. the depth of analysis here took my understanding of the movie to a whole different level. very nice and very well done 👍
Me as well. I’ve watched the analysis 3x and each time I ball my eyes out, especially at the end when Spikima asks the same question he asked at the beginning. Beautiful film and equally beautiful analysis.
This is one of the most beautiful reviews I have seen of this beautiful film. This film is a masterpiece and everything about it was absolutely stunning, moving and really showed the beauty in blackness. The way the black skin was brought out in the screen was visually perfect. The acting was phenomenal. The story told was so real. Loved it. I am now subscribed to your channel!
Spikima, as always, thank for this amazing analysis. It reveals a lot for me. I loved the film and touch deeper in me. But now is even better. I told to my friends, even my therapist the quality of your videos. I love the script, the production, the editing. You're the goat.
Weirdly I Was just thinking about this film. One of the best movies post 2000, and the best example I can think of when it comes to the connection between what is happening and how that is portrayed. The camerawork is just so so good. The movie is a great achievement in my book
I remember sitting in the theater, watching this film, telling myself that I’ve got nothing in common with these characters, yet realizing all the human feelings that I share with them. And then the moment came when I burst into tears: when that song on the jukebox starts. “Hello, stranger. It seems like a mighty long time…”
This interpretation was beautiful! Thank you. The casting department got it so right with Litttle Chiron. The audience had to connect with HIM in order to care about the rest of the story. His innocent face is what pulled me in.
god damn man. Moonlight is probably my favourite film. this analysis is absolutely incredible. well done man. I hope you're proud of this. Beautiful. You articulated a lot of things I felt but couldn't put into words. Also brought things to my conscious mind that I wasn't aware of. This film and this video should be shown to school children. Beautiful, man.
your film commentaries are exceptional…i can’t get enough of the way you interpret and delve into these films and their mastery of certain aspects of directing. i got started with the horror content you’ve posted because that’s one of my main interests and that’s what brought me here via algorithm, but i’ve got to tell you that your analysis and brilliant content has really gotten me into film in general. thank you for what you do, thank you for your brain, and thank you for sharing it all with us. it’s truly a highlight of my day and i look forward to your posts more than you can possibly imagine. have a wonderful day and take care of yourself. ♥️
This was so beautiful! I've been wanting to watch this film but have never had the time or been in the right mind set to do so. Hopefully I can watch it today after work. Watching this video I couldn't help but think of a video that has been burned in to my mind of a baby boy, a young little black boy getting smacked around because he said he liked boys. The abuser recording his action like it's something to be proud of. I wish black men would let other black men be who they are. There is such an urge to be a "man" and to be a "man" you have to fill a mold that can be quite toxic for lack of a better word. I know it's something that happens I a lot of different races. But this movie and the video of the child being abused had black men. I hope this comment doesn't rub people the wrong way. It's just something I've noticed watching many commentary videos and such.
I know right. Moonlight is such an amazing but depressing movie. As a heterosexual black young man myself born in 1998 from Lakemba, New South Wales, Australia with healthy positive masculinity I absolutely have no problem if boys and men around the world want to show their emotions because we are human beings with emotional feelings. Being bisexual and being homosexual does not make you less of a man & there are bisexual plus homosexual teenage boys & men who are masculine around the world. We males really need to show empathy for boys and men & listen to how they feel inside instead of mocking them & rejecting them by claiming that they are not manly or masculine enough because that is called bullying & it is a dangerous game. What is a man? He is a human male adult enough said men do not have to prove their manhood because that is a huge lie made up by old school gender activist bigots. As a mature young man myself plus other men around the world we do not have to prove our masculinity because that is just machismo not masculinity, so to all my fellow brothers out there just be a compassionate mature gentleman that is it end of story. To all my fellow human brothers and sisters around the world always remember be genuine & take care of one another.

Hey, may I ask, how do you not get copyright strikes on your videos when you use a lot of film clips and scores? is it because it's considered educational? Absolutely love your channel, just currious
6:35 do you think there’s significance that the camera is just below the water line and bobbing in the waves? And it would have been a pain to film it, was the camera on a boat or did someone have to stand and film it?
They probably had a sort of hand held waterproof camera box for that. Not difficult to shoot with. The operator would have been in water holding the box. As for significance or symbolism I’ll leave that up to the scholars to debate. What do you think? What does deep water mean to you, the ocean, trying to stay afloat? Ps. Listen to the narration during this scene. He offers some interesting insights. Learning to stand/swim, baptism motif, drowning motif, struggling, being helped by a father figure. A father figure that will one day disappear. How do you stand on your own ultimately when your protector is “in absentia.”
Have you watched Moonlight? What did you guys think of it?

Hey, may I ask, how do you not get copyright strikes on your videos when you use a lot of film clips and scores? is it because it's considered educational?
Absolutely love your channel, just currious
Beautiful. The movie and this video.
@@JEEDUHCHRI thanks for the insight!
Excellent work!
I love this movie so much
amazing analysis! Do you happen to know what the song title is at around 18:46? It's beautiful.
