Some Trivia concerning the "Three Swords" of our protagonist here! it was common for warriors back then to carry not only a Katana or Tachi depending on the Times but also the shorter Sidearm, the Wakizashi, serving as a one handed alternative to the katana, looking like a shortened one Reason being that the way katana and wakizashi were crafted they were prone to breaking under great stress, especially older and lower quality katana. the construction of having the steel of the blade folded over an iron core and then hardened folded over one another made it hard to bend and gave it alot of cutting power however it made it very stiff, every bent that was caused essentially made the blade useless and nigh unfixable, so incase that happened most warriors would then simply ditch the broken katana and switch to their Wakizashi to continue fighting. The Wakizashi was sometimes also followed by a Tanto, a Knife length variant of the Katana, that one was mostly carried for Utility The Katana was usually worn on the left side of the weapon belt, The Wakizashi either underneath or fixed sideways of the Belly by some. the Tanto was worn as was individually favoured So the "Three Swords" Do actually make alot of sense, especially considering the nature of the protagonist.
The Damascus was brittle is struck on the blade and therefore must be blocked using the softer back of the blade and if hit on the side the blades were known to bend or break due to the way they hardened and forged the blades. Damascus is beautiful and tough but can also be a little too tough, I will take a long sword as primary and a wakizashi as a second but that’s just me
Katanas are not made of “damascus steel”. The reason why they folded their swords during this period in Japan was because the quality of the iron on their Islands was so poor.
@@seshgreen4084 Where in the fuck did you get Damascus construction and Katanas mixed up? Like it’s actually baffling even to me who isn’t particularly into blades or metal working but just into history.

Aside from the paragraph of info mikanoko wrote, over here in the States it was (and in some places still is) commonplace for bar tenders to carry firearms. Back in our Wild West days outlaws and people who thought they could get away with crap were all over and so most people but especially store owners needed something that could stop a person, typically a shot gun under the counter and a pistol at the hip...
@@mikanoko4990 I see you know your steel. The Damascus method of forging made their blades the sharpest in the world but brittle if struck from the side.

Amazing storytelling like always. My ONLY comment is the wearing of your weapons: your katana is upside down. The mune (spine) of at LEAST the katana would face downward towards the ground to allow for a smooth cross body draw that would permit an immediate strike. Tachi we're normally worn blade down, but it's user preference. Later era armor would sometimes facilitate a katana being worn like a tachi, but that's about the only time I can think of. A Straw Hat Ronin should DEFINITELY be rocking that katana blade side up. (ง ͠° ͟ل͜ ͡°)ง
While a interesting historical comment, really doesn’t pertain much to this particular video as it doesn’t take away from the content of the video. If it was simply to add interesting trivia for the video than ok but if it was a attempt to critique.... not so great.

Your Japanese is pretty good here, Jim. I enjoyed it. However, one thing truly gnawed at me because it sounded very unnatural. You don't ever use "onegaishimasu" after command (te) form. Technically he could have gone by Jin since it's common for lone syllable ending m's to be replaced by n's.
