misnomer saying obedience. This is scent detection similar to search and rescue, not an obedience trial, tho certain dogs have excellent form. My dog knows how to but does not see this as fun. She was like "but why? Too much work." These are much higher energy dogs ready to work.

I wish they commented on whether the dogs got the correct one.to me it looked like the dogs made mistakes most of the time

You can watch the guy place it. It's always in the same spot, so you only have to watch once. 2 got the correct one.

Thanks for posting this. I have a question. The dogs are so well trained, so why can't they walk off stage without pulling like mad?

I wonder that as well. I was watching them come and sit so well and I was like "that's even better than my service dog" but then the rest I was like "oh nvm.."

It's because all of this competition and all the seriousness that they have to behave once they're done or right before you want them is amped up as possible. You want this to be fun you want this to be the most exciting game they've ever had and they're so excited. Look at agility competitions before and afters look at even obedience Master competitions those dogs have everything down 2 every paw step. These dogs are extremely well-mannered but this environment is set up to be very professional during the times of judging but you want your dog which has the mentality of a 3 to 5 year old to love and enjoy doing this. You don't want them to think of it as a competition or that they're being graded.

Here is just part of an obedience competition. For the highest level you literally have to do a 10-minute Sit Stay With You Walking Away in a group of people with no visible reason for your dog to stay sitting. There's also the 10 minute down stay. They cannot break their stay. If they're sitting there not allowed to lay if they're laying their not allowed to sit when you tell them to stay it means stay as you left them.

They're excited. They're so trained in this sport that they want to go run over and do it NOW. They know exactly what's coming. So they get so amped up they begin to pull on the lead. These dogs are fit and athletic, they have energy, unlike the average fat house pet.

This exercise is quite flawed. Competitor 1 is at a huge disadvantage as the scent picture grows everytime a fresh sample of the same judge's scent is placed in the same position. Over time the scent is even more concentrated giving later competitors the advantage. It would be far more advantageous for either a focus wall introduced or sterile pots be placed out, rather than the method used in this sequence. This is proved by the dogs that work later on, hitting on the target sample everytime. I don`t agree with the way that the dog is smothered with the scent.

the dog can smell the scent without sticking it right in his nose. We underestimate the power of the dog's nose!

Wow so many dogs got it wrong. Also I wonder why the trainers stand in that weird pose

Crufts require a disciplined approach. It`s how I have worked all of my dogs throughout the years as it switches the dogs onto working mode

My dog do it easy, I not understand why that dogs fail this in completion, so easy find it from 12 targets.

This is awful. This was painful to watch. Other people have commented in a similar tone, as well. There is no need to drape the article over the dog's nose. I'm embarrassed for the dogs. I chalk this up to the trainers of these people not understanding how the dog's olfactory system works.

Completely agree. It is so easy to imprint a dog onto human scent - I trained and operationally handled live body detection dogs. on a border frontier. We never trained in that way. The whole set up is wrong and unfair - please see my comments on this thread
