Wonderful talk! Much of Dr. McGilchrist's philosophical thought is anticipated in Arthur Eddington, circa 1927, the great physicist and idealist philosopher of science--the primacy of relations over relata, of consciousness over matter. "The stuff of the world is mind-stuff." But I find it so refreshing to hear this today, drawn out of his neurological study.

On the sacred- the Vedic tradition describes it well, called That, the Self.
The essence that is all, that all is part of, that all can be, will be and was made of, yet can never diminish or take away from That. It is transcendent as well as manifested, ever creative. The Upanishad Isha describes it well. The observer, the observed and act of observation are all one once we enter the Self state.
    Or Isha Upanishad:
The Self is everywhere. Bright is the Self,
    Indivisible, untouched by sin, wise,
    Immanent and transcendent.
It is who holds the cosmos together.
    Again Prashna Upanishad:
Those who know the Self, the seat of consciousness,
In whom the breath and all the senses live,
Know all, gentle friend, and live in all.

As a string player /teacher must we be clear that the lyre was not a bowed instrument so the reference to the string of a bow is for an arrow projectile ,not of the violin of bowed harp family using horsehair and rosin under tensile stress for producing friction across the strings and therefore sound.

Thank you Iain 🎉I appreciate your language, attention and intentions to give clarity to humanities. When I first heard your explanation about the divide brain I got to see why I was not seeing the divided brain of people around me because I too was looking from my divided brain. 😂
When you state about the different states of water, I thought about Trinity. Judging the left with the right brought about continued and uninterrupted conflicts for thousands of years.
I am not sure but New Testament might be right brain and Old Testament left brain. One Bible and three major religions lost in translation because it was written. In the Bible love is a commandment. If loving your enemy might look impossible it’s possible to find common ground good enough stop wars.
Gun and butter but when guns become butter in a divided brain values and culture the challenges become challenging. By writing a policy left brain subdue the expressions of right brain intentions and creativity.
Congratulations for opening the conversation beautifully with truth and love.

Made it to 18:30 and can't keep going. I have no idea what an "experiential world is" or how an organ can produce one (ex nihilo?), but even if I just pushed through all that, and even if I granted that brains or hemispheres of brains can attend to things (which they certainly cannot).... The fact that he thinks "they attend differently" clearly and obviously entails that "they produce different experiential worlds" means his way of thinking/reasoning is completely foreign to me. I have no idea how to make that connection, so I don't think I'm going to be able to follow the rest of this.

Dr. McGilchrist may speculate too much on how consciousness works. I don't think "constant evolving" together with matters is accurate. I am not saying Buddhism is necessarily correct in every aspect. But Buddhism doesn't believe consciousness manifest itself through matters. To some extent, it is exactly the love nature of consciousness that can easily confuse itself in the material world and get addicted, which is the sourse of samsara.
His findings on the brains are very educational, but I don't
agree with him on some of the views on consciousness.

That's a beautiful talk; a work of art.(not necessarily agreeing with the premise as language is very important to communicate one's needs (mothers get it wrong-intuition without reason fails) and to be conscious and work with others. Humans complement each other to solve problems. Otherwise, they fall into self-reference, narcissism and even psychopathy. Besides, who would buy your book if no one can speak or read and write or know about philosophy? Or the ones who speak would be only the ones who have the preferred interhemispheric connectivity that fits with the ideology of their group? (including gender and sexual preference and whether they wish to procreate or not. The ultimate group is so small like a Royal family which did not go that far as the genetic pool gets too restricted. In the past, women were also lobotomised and now they get dementia and live longer. Is everyone looking for a mother substitute to see them? She would not as she is more interested in adults and in her own development. It is well known how religion confused such matters. In the very far future, the "artificial womb" may work but "I" prefer personalised medicine and embryonic stem cells - who owns research by the way? The cold narcissist or the vulnerable and the naive who would though respect the hippocratic oath and the law? (no decision is taken by one person alone but of cpurse there is also lynching). Some suggested such an oath to become part of the technologists' education and some people with strong left hemispheric dominance keep strong morals too. They do not fall into cold utilitarianism but try to think of solutions. Only psychopaths think in such black and white terms or those on the wrong medication. A lot get misdiagnosed. Psychiatry is a mess and psyhologists had invented horrific torture to find out what people are hiding. On a very basic level, there is also a very basic amswer to the question "she/he/they love(s) me, "they" love me not..". One could ask).. So I do really hope you are able to solve the "meta-meta-meta" crisis with the other giants of thought as my generation is asleep or on antidepressants and the others play video games. In this way, we can only ressurect a quantum Hitller, not Jesus. Even babies are trying to escape (miscarriage) but have no such luck now (made in the lab like tomatoes, they are put in incubators to become the "Messiahs" of their parents and carry their cross. Even the psychopaths. With language and reason such things can be negotiated. So babies started talking and speaking in makaton to say they prefer coffee than hot chocolate... Imagine...). I am sure you are able to understand that this is not schizophrenic talk but improvisation and that also requires one to be aware of themselves (sometimes they are only partly aware of course and sometimes they lose control).

Interesting…I’m still wondering how we would all “turn out” if there was no written word of God-ism and God-like ways. The part of us which reaches out innately to God, seeking to be spared from suffering, often in a crisis-moment here on Earth…if this part is asked: how would I live in harmony…what way of being do I hold on to each day, even if there is no written religious text…could we all just bring this to life and living while we are here? I say “in harmony” because I don’t walk this earth in solitary means…and for me, the directive answer is kindness. With or without the Biblical teachings I grew up with, I can strive to be kind…to myself and others. It doesn’t require others to believe in God or Christ or anyone.

@@MaggyBurrowes Personally, I don't think any living being should be referred to as "it."
As I understand it, we are formed in the image of God: we, both male and female. But as it happens, our language only allows for gendered personal pronouns. I suppose using the modern convention of "they" to express the third person singular might be used but some might unjustifiably take this as an endorsement of the Roman conception of trinity.
Language has limitations, inherently. Words are discreet tools we use to express continuous realities. There are schools of philosophies built on investigating this.
