The first time we played this one it was at five players and it really was a lot. Basically impossible to plan ahead and instead hoping for the best by the time your turn comes around. I also vote three players is optimal for Arborea. I liked that waiting for your turn isn't simply "dead time" for staring at your phone or whatever because you're always paying attention to the various pilgrimage tracks' movement that have your workers on them deciding on when you want to jump off. That and the shared resource system are my favorite aspects hands down.
