I see people driving 65-70mph on snowy freeways where I live. It's often drivers of trucks or SUVs who think because they have four wheel drive they can safely do it.
Even in Florida you can see people driving like idiots in heavy rain so bad that your wiper blades can’t clear the windshield. Nobody wants to slow down.
I was an owner operator or a small towing company in northern MN and what I learned over my many years on our roadways is that so many people now own/drive AWD vehicles which gives drivers a false sense of security due to the better traction. What most people fail to learn until it's too late in that even four wheel drives STOP just like everything else on our roadways, poorly when roads are slippery. Slow down no matter what other driver's are doing and give yourself an 'Out' in case of a wreck in front of you.
It's been a horrible year for black ice. Little bit of snow on top of residual salt makes the road wet. Then it turns super cold below the point where the salt is effective and the road freezes. Then they put down a lot more salt to try and melt the black ice. The weather warms up, the road thaws, a little more snow falls, repeat. Whatever happened to using sand in winter?
The reason why there will always be tons of accidents is because people have the mentality that it will never happen to them. They always believe that they are better drivers than anyone else on the road. That mentality is dangerous.

A running Lumina or Beretta is a rare sight. Chances are pretty high that an elderly person has maintained that car through all these years to be on the road yet. Plus the way they merge out in front of everyone going at a really slow speed reminds of an older person merging into traffic. I could be way off but it crossed my mind when first seeing the clip.
@@sleepyjay2664 I pulled that clip and in the longer version the pull over to the left shoulder. They get out and shine flashlights under the back drivers corner of the car. They then get back in and proceed slowly down towards the ramp. My guess would be that the caliper was locking up. I've never driven in the ice and snow, so I don't know, but it appears to me that they are all driving at twice the safety speed or beyond. When I was just 12 or 14, I was driving a car along a track on the edge of the salt lake. It was so slippery that even though I was only doing 10 mph, once the tyres started sliding there was no stopping it and there was no way of controlling where it went either. It just kept going and going and going and no matter where I steared, there was no response at all I went from one lock to the other. It made no difference at all.

When there is ice and snow on the roadways, the best way to avoid an accident is to slow down to the point of just barely moving ahead, even when the roads seem to have been mostly cleared. But instead of taking things slow and easy, most people think the conditions are the same as they would be on a hot, clear day in July. So they start driving full speed ahead again. 90% of these accidents could have been avoided if the drivers slowed down to no more than 45 instead of going 55 or 65. Amazing the stupidity of so many people. On the other hand, just don't freaking stop for no reason in the middle of the road. Slow, steady and constant is the key to winter driving. No quick or sudden moves of any sort.

I’m assuming most of the drivers we’re watching are from Minnesota and not visitors from Florida or Texas. I know you can find incompetent drivers everywhere. But these icy conditions are so treacherous, unforgiving, and common in these situations, I would expect people to be more cautious. Oh well, I realize it’s kind of a naive comment, but wanted to say it anyway. Great compilation, as usual. 👏

As others have said, if you stop in the lanes of travel for a crash/other on the shoulder, you should/hopefully will be held responsible for any damage that occurs to or behind your vehicle. It's ridiculous. GTFO the roadway.
I am so old, how old? I remember when national news used to say "Minnesotans know how to handle winter driving". Retired trucker advice , slow down in wet, icy or snowy road surfaces. Most do , not all.
Every time I see cars off the road or involved in a collision, I look at their tires, the vast majority are using all season tires. If you live where there is an actual winter, buy winter tires, it’s simple.
@Dominique Jeannin: if you are slowing down or stopping to gawk at the tires of people long enough to determine what said tires are; then you are a major part of the problem. If you see an accident on bad roads focus on the roadway and keep driving. Don't be rubbernecking!!! Look at where you want to go not where you don't want to go!
@@bronzegod8037 I guess if you personally need to slow down or stop to see something obvious, yes, I could see that you’d be the problem. Do you also need to stop walking so you can chew your gum. Thank you for the advice, BRONZE GOD.
Sorry Dominique, but putting the bad drivers blame on all season tires makes no sense. I get by with fwd sedan with all seasons that are a few years in. Lack of Road condition knowledge and attention/ speeds are the major causes. Badly maintained vehicles are another
@@GreySchezwan Look up tire testing on RUclips, there are many tire manufacturers and independent car and truck enthusiasts channels to choose from, they will conclusively show you the difference between all tire types on ice, snow, even wet conditions. Every single one will prove that winter tires are vastly superior in winter, no exception. Yes, it’s possible to “get by” with all season tires, but they are simply inferior, especially when another driver does something that requires any evasive action on your part, you are extremely limited. Many of the accidents shown on these videos are low speed and could easily be avoided with winter tires. There is no argument for their value, ask anyone who uses winter tires, they would never go back to “getting by”. If you choose to not accept reality, that’s your prerogative, but I guarantee you have not experienced the difference yourself. I see many all season drivers doing 15 mph down roads where all other traffic can safely handle more efficient and safe speeds. 4 wheel drive is also just as useless at braking and steering in emergency conditions with all season.
Thank you. Pay attention and slow down - especially when you see the cars ahead of you sliding. Always watch for cars hitting the guardrail and bouncing off - where are they going? Worst fear, accident on a bridge - ZOINKS - do not want to go for a swim this time of year.
I don't know how it's possible but the roads don't at all respect what kind of car you drive. Everything from small sedans to large SUVs and pickup trucks all crashed on the highways this month. Go figure.
Had to drive somewhere around 11am today on 694. I was in the passenger seat and witnessed a hell of an accident around 694/35E. White car lost control at the fork, slid sideways through the sign there, and slowly rolled back into traffic. All airbags deployed from what I could see. We were headed the opposite direction. That wasn't the only accident in progress that we witnessed, but definitely the most severe.
I *think* this may have had a person outside their car struck… We watched some video of the post-crash scene and it was not suitable for publishing. Injuries appeared severe. 😞 🙏

I can't believe you guys don't slow down when it's this icy, particularly into the corners 😳 I take it you also don't have any electronic signage to alert drivers of collisions up ahead. We have this in Australia and it's great. Might wanna think about that....
I like watching these videos, MN Safety. I live in sub-tropical Australia and don't see snow. However, if I ever end up somewhere where it does snow, I'll have a basic education on how not to drive in icy conditions...not that I think I need it. Do the Minnesotans not realize the snow is coming?jk I'd say PA drivers are doing ok this year. We only get 100 wrecks in our county every couple years when/ if there's ice PADOT decides isn't going to happen lol and doesn't treat it.
Shout out to Lowry Tunnel for honorable mention award.
💯
Very well put-together video and has great narration.
We are supposed to be past this by now. We know how to drive in snow.
Everyone needs to slow the f down and pay attention.
I’m so glad you narrated all these videos because I’m too stupid to understand exactly what I’m watching
1:34...someone explain
Someone has their fingers in the highway departments affairs. And it is costing the tax payer and providing garbage service
" with an amazing response time " too funny !
You are just to nice when describing these drivers. They are either driving to fast and/or stupid, or both!
That last fool obviously got their loc from a Cracker Jack box.
That last clip, was the driver not paying attention or under the influence??? Or damage to the vehicle?
He who is first is last really fits here
Bonus points for hitting the cop car, and a bigger fine on your ticket !!!
Has anyone else thought about putting your low beam headlights on????
Duuuuuuhhhhh!!!
Snow tires would solve most of these problems.
As others have said, if you stop in the lanes of travel for a crash/other on the shoulder, you should/hopefully will be held responsible for any damage that occurs to or behind your vehicle. It's ridiculous. GTFO the roadway.
"Amazing response time." 😂😂
At 1:26 was there any reason that black car stopped?
I am so old, how old? I remember when national news used to say "Minnesotans know how to handle winter driving". Retired trucker advice , slow down in wet, icy or snowy road surfaces. Most do , not all.
At least the last car knows how to use the emergency flashers. Some drivers have no clue when to use them.
0:42 that fire truck was even sliding.
@@dominiquejeannin4510 Huh?
Im glad I live in Costa Rica. I don't miss the cold at all! Stay safe!
I *think* this may have had a person outside their car struck…
We watched some video of the post-crash scene and it was not suitable for publishing. Injuries appeared severe. 😞 🙏
@@MidwestSafety Sad.
the way ppl drive is shameful, abhorrent 01:33
that minivan never braked until 1/2 second before impact. Road looks pretty straight, how long did they have their eyes off the road??????
I can't believe you guys don't slow down when it's this icy, particularly into the corners 😳
I take it you also don't have any electronic signage to alert drivers of collisions up ahead. We have this in Australia and it's great. Might wanna think about that....
The narrator's voice is satisfying
I like watching these videos, MN Safety. I live in sub-tropical Australia and don't see snow. However, if I ever end up somewhere where it does snow, I'll have a basic education on how not to drive in icy conditions...not that I think I need it. I've had a lot of experience driving in slippery mud conditions in mountains, so I guess that's similar.
pretty similar except sometimes ice cannot be seen unless you read conditions well black equals skim ice, super slippery
0:40 Did that firetruck have rear wheel steering?
Got to love the way Americans drive. Every day is NASCAR. 1:33 check the reaction times of him (brake lights) someone on the phone, headphones in… basically not switched on like the rest. Which is why this is now the ‘norm’ behaviour on roads. Clear conditions; no fog, snowing, blizzard or spray. Just a robot behind the wheel - or may as well be!
How many licences were revoked???
Is there no aggregate that could be placed on the roadways? There is plenty of waste material that could be utilized in that region. Are weather forecasts subpar in the area?
