    Made mine and it works perfectly except that the lid pops off when I switch the pump off due to the pressure of the water hence how I cam across this video.
    You mentioned a vent hole. Was thinking the same except the water would keep siphoning the tank. Still thinking 🤔.
    Additional note: mine uses internal filter and is under the tank so a little different

    Where did you get the reducing washer? I went to Hope Depot and was told they don't carry any rubber washer, I got the same fitting but I need a washer to fit the 1" outlet, what size washer,1" or bigger?

    It's just a standard gravity return bucket filter, it's not nearly the same class as Pressurized Canister FX6 filter. This type of filter have been done on the pond and water feature for years.

    Was told that lava rock works better as a filter media in an submerged setting like this and you wouldn't have to weigh that down. The plastic pot scrubbies work best in more of a trickle tower/wet-dry type filter.

    • @brandongray8121
      @brandongray8121  6 лет назад +1

      Blake Williams anything with alot of surface area will work just fine. As long as it's non toxic and doesn't leech anything into your water. I have lava rocks in one of my tanks right now. I have an aquaponics set up on my big 150 African cichlid tank and lava rocks are the base layer for the aquaponics. Then I have the clay pellets that are made for ponics on top of that. They don't need to be any special type of lava rocks either. You can usually find them near the grill area in big bags. The main reason I used pot scrubbers in this set up is because you have to have something to catch all the fish waste. They do a great job at that. Then you just squeeze them out in old fish tank water when you do a water change. Never ending filter.

      @@brandongray8121 I use a large floor buffer scrub pad for mechanical, and the rest is Lava. Landscaping places have big chunks of lava that are cheap and easy to break up. A hatchet works best.

    Sorry man I would never build this, I built joeys and it turn out fantastic, it's kinda of a wast of space since you have to have it above your tank, and that means u have to spend money to build something to set it on. And you could have did better at the parts you got also.
    Like goto a hydroponic store and get some of there fittings for the barbed ends. Just a suggestion since for some reason this showed up in my play list

      Todd Beal I set my buckets right on top of my tanks with one board going across. Also I was just making this video to try to help people out on a budget. Hydroponics parts are not cheap. You are more then welcome to remake the video with your version. Send me a link to it. Always open for ways to improve.

      @@brandongray8121 home depot and lowes parts were more expensive than my local hydroponic store. Bulk heads were 13$..hydro store 2$... But buckets are cheaper at lowes or home depot... ZNgoldenvision 1 I greatly enjoy the DIY projects. I get a sort of pride when I show people that come over the different set ups I have made. I have hundreds of fish. Multiple set ups which only a few have store bought filters on them. I've made all of my stands and hoods except one the is a metal frame. That is part of the fun of fish keeping. Finding what works and what doesn't. I have been running the filter that is in this video since I made with no issues.

    I wouldn't use a Home Depot bucket. Just because it's plastic doesn't mean it's aquarium safe. Use only food grade plastic. Food grade plastic buckets are used by bakeries and can be gotten for free. Also used for aquarium sea salt containers.

    where is your mechanical filtration? you covered for biological, well sort of, pot scrubbies aren't all that good for that but do work. and everyone chill about it not looking great, its obvious not what you use for a show tank, but in a fish room could work just fine.

    • @brandongray8121
      @brandongray8121  5 лет назад

      The pot scrubbers work as both. But after making this video I did start covering the baskets with filter mat. Just because it takes so much longer to rinse and squeeze each pot scrubber out. This filter is still running to this day. I actually made three more for other tanks. Highly recommend these as long as like you said you are not worried about the looks. Thanks for the comment.

    I have an fx6. This is not even close to a fx6 it's not even a canister filter.... This is an overhead filter made out of a 5 gallon bucket. Click bait title.

    • @dewaldolivier3216
      @dewaldolivier3216 Год назад

      This can be a canister filter and not overhead filter. This is in its basic form exactly what a canister filter is or even a sump in a bucket so to speak. He's using an external pump but internal pump can be used too with bucket under tank.
