SP 4449 has had an impressive operation history since it was restored back to operation during the mid-1970s for the American Freedom Train tour. Just out of curiosity, why won't U.P. let 4449 run on Union Pacific trackage any more? She'd be a good companion to their SP Heritage Engine, UP 1996.
Thanks for the compliments. In regards to 4449, UP does not allow any steam locomotives that don't carry their logo to run on their trackage. It is why engines like SSW 819 are on display, and not riding the rails, and why C&NW 1385 cannot run on the mainline, and only on museum trackage.
@@TrainGuru Technically though, 4449 does carry the UP logo. Just like UP 1996, 4449 carries the SP logo which is now UP. Fallen flag locomotives still technically count.

Unfortunately, she and SP&S 700 have been banned from operating on the Oregon Pacific Railroad, due to the weight of the engines wearing down the track.
An interesting fact about No. 4449 is that she today contained most of her sister locomotives' parts; one of the driving wheels from No. 4437, the pilot truck from No. 4443, and the trailing truck from No. 4450, as shown by the numbers stamped on each of the parts. :)
The 2472 is considered the 4449's adopted Sister, while the 8444 (844) was her rail nemesis. It seems now the two are (sort of) friends after working together for the Pacific Northwest Excursion. 2467 could be an adopted sister too!

Although I'm happy 4449 is still operating today, hopefully one day she can find another shortline or regional Railroad to stretch her legs more on than what she is doing now and that does not rely on a Class 1 or Amtrak.
Amazing how a full-sized replica was used in the crash scene. It looks so real that it looks like the real one crashed. Movie magic am I right? It still gets confused thinking it's the real locomotive and not a replica mock-up
The SP was more relaxed with steam locomotives on their system. Unlike the UP, they had the a car on the train to power the passenger cars instead of a diesel. They also only used diesel locomotives to help an engine up or down a mountain or hill.
👏👏👏👏 10/10….and it’s a real pity she won’t be coming back to this side of the country anytime soon….Now I would’ve loved to see her tackle the old fort loops but as far as I know that probably won’t happen anytime soon either…
There is always a chance. A lot said that 4449 coming to Michigan would be impossible. The real issue today is the Union Pacific won't allow 4449 to run on their tracks. BNSF is the only railroad that allows the engine. Which is a real shame because 4449 running to Sacramento, Redding Trestle, and Los Angeles over the SP Route was amazing. But, there is always hope for a change...
@@TrainGuru I also found out there was an excursion planned for UP 4014 that was postponed It was a trip through the Pacific Northwest and through Portland which 4014 would of meet 4449 for the first time Again that trip was postponed which was switched with a simple trip to Denver Would of been nice to see two famous steam locomotives together Maybe someday UP and the ORHF will go back to that plan and someday 4449 will have an amazing mainline excursion once again since she did an IMAX trip for BNSF. Of course they need permission from the FRA, BNSF, Amtrak, etc. for that to happen. Until now, we wait like the SP&S 700 does.

Back when I started recording. I realized right around the 1989 Era that I had forgotten that piece of information. I had about 5-6 days until May 20th hit. That is why I didn't go back and rerecord. Just like every other locomotive....yes totally 4449, a giant 4-8-4 tasked to haul one of the most famous passenger trains of her day...was just like any other steam locomotive. ;P

I love Southern Pacific 4449!
This is Americana. What a beauty!!
Sp 4449 20th anniversary year 1961 in oaks park
When will SP 4449 return to mainline excursions? (also Amazing video!)
Not anytime soon unfortunately. No PTC means no excursions…
Aw that sucks
How much does it cost?
Although I'm happy 4449 is still operating today, hopefully one day she can find another shortline or regional Railroad to stretch her legs more on than what she is doing now and that does not rely on a Class 1 or Amtrak.
I got a question, when 4449 derailed in the movie, did it actually derail or was that effects
That was a model of the engine.
@@TrainGuru ohh ok,thanks
During of american freedom train 1976-1977
My number No.1 American steam engine. God bless her and bless the nation she and her railroad and SP fleet she steamed for.
When I was four years old in the year 2000. I first saw 4449 at the bridge, she was painted as BNSF Employee Special :D
lowkey best livery she ever wore
4449 is still alive
Amazing how a full-sized replica was used in the crash scene. It looks so real that it looks like the real one crashed. Movie magic am I right? It still gets confused thinking it's the real locomotive and not a replica mock-up
It’s definitely a step up from the Greatest Show on Earth.
2005 was NOT a down for the 4449 for she did a doubleheader with SP&S 700 along the Columbia River Gorge in July of that year
Thanks for the correction. I will do a remake of this documentary later on down the road. Keep on the lookout for that!
@@TrainGuruoh cool!
So sometimes it's the Vintage train alone and other times it's got a diesel unit for backup and or Head End Power. I wonder what makes the decision
@@TrainGuruYeah will see.
Loving the rt3 soundtrack
4449's Whistle:
"We exist.
I run.
I am powerful.
We were great 👍!"
what is the name of the music at 8:05
In The Swing - Alan Moorhouse
At the end of the first chapter
Cross Roads - Railroad Tycoon
I think you forgot the moment when 4449 went to Sacramento with cameras covering her for a documentary
Yup for Skyfire, gonna mention that in Project Remaster.
@@TrainGuru here’s the link to documentary: ruclips.net/video/M-cFPPNkZnI/видео.html
I have that same one in my VHS collection.
@@TrainGuru I also found out there was an excursion planned for UP 4014 that was postponed
It was a trip through the Pacific Northwest and through Portland which 4014 would of meet 4449 for the first time
Again that trip was postponed which was switched with a simple trip to Denver
Would of been nice to see two famous steam locomotives together
Maybe someday UP and the ORHF will go back to that plan and someday 4449 will have an amazing mainline excursion once again since she did an IMAX trip for BNSF. Of course they need permission from the FRA, BNSF, Amtrak, etc. for that to happen. Until now, we wait like the SP&S 700 does.
1:18:58 The fire alarm going off 🤣🤣🤣
Just noticed that lol!
Fun fact:
The American freedom red white and blue on sp 4449 is amtrak phase 2 Stripe on GE E60
Nice
TRAINGUY’s last true project he worked on RUclips
We will all miss him... Working on this project with him was an honor.
@@TrainGuru from what I heard, there’s a possibility that he might come back
@@guy8902 check my two videos about Zane. He said he isn’t coming back.
@@guy8902 buddy. As much fun as it was being on RUclips. I’m done, I’ve had a solid 3 years on RUclips and I’m tired. Also this is my senior year of high school. I want to focus on real life
0:28 BEST INTRO EVER!
Thank you!
Can you do a video on the pride of Canada aka Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson number 2860?
I don’t know if there’s enough history behind the engine to warrant a documentary. I can however do one on another Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson. Maybe 2816.
Ok
1:15:39 That sounds a little bit like it's SP 6 chime whistle
Will the 4449 ever go to MN again?
Since BNSF is more steam friendly, chances are she will only return for another Train Festival.
Very good video, but how on earth did you forget to include her filming for the IMAX movie Train Time?
Back when I started recording. I realized right around the 1989 Era that I had forgotten that piece of information. I had about 5-6 days until May 20th hit. That is why I didn't go back and rerecord. In addition, the voice recording would've sounded different if I would've tried to just add it in to save time. I also left out the Cantara Loop Excursions in 1991.
Sp 4449 wearing two whistles the replecament fitted the engine sp&s 3 chime whistle and sp 6 chime whistle
Just like every other locomotive....yes totally 4449, a giant 4-8-4 tasked to haul one of the most famous passenger trains of her day...was just like any other steam locomotive. ;P
What I meant in the script was every other STREAMLINED locomotive. But I kinda fouled up. But I still stand by the fact that her history during her excursion era was and is more interesting than her service life.

Why SP 4449 dosen’t go to California State Railroad Museum in 1999 in place of 2001?🤔🚂
She did go to the museum in 1999. But she didn't go in 2001 because she was running excursions in Oregon and Washington, and there was no festival at Sacramento that year.
45:47 The goof is the boiler is facing the wrong way.
It’s a Cab Forward, the boiler’s the right way.
@@TrainGuru Does that count as a goof?
Nope. That’s how the Cab Forwards were designed.
Alternative Title:Southern Pacific 4449:Portland’s Freedom Train.
And Also Happy 81st Birthday to Andrew(SP 4449)
I chose Pride of America because the engine isn’t just Portland’s, she is America’s. Los Angeles, San Antonio, and San Jose have all made a home for this engine.
Do a video about sierra railway 3
I have plans for #3…
